Noncommensurate 2D interfaces hold great promise toward low friction and nanoelectromechanical applications. For identical constituents, the crystals interlock at specific rotational configurations leading to high barriers for slide. In contrast, nonidentical constituents comprising different lattice parameters should enable robust superlubricity for all rotational configurations. This is however not the case for gold–graphite interfaces, as both theory and experiments show scaling behavior of the sliding force as a function of the interface contact area. By simulating the sliding force for gold–graphite interfaces, this work shows that the origin for high force barriers at special angular configurations is a result of commensurability between the moiré structure and the contact geometry. Consequently, this paper suggests new geometries that can potentially overcome such commensurability effects to enable robust superlubricity.  相似文献

Recently, we demonstrated that administration of the orally active iron chelating agent deferiprone (1,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxypyrid-4-one (L1)) at 6-hour intervals results in significantly greater urinary iron excretion than that induced during administration of the drug at 12-hour intervals. That study was conducted in thalassemia patients, all of whom had received a packed red cell transfusion of 15 cc/kg. 72 hours prior to evaluation of urinary iron excretion, at a time when endogenous erythropoiesis would be expected to be at its lowest. In clinical practice however, thalassemia patients, suppression of endogenous erythropoiesis is not sustained between transfusions. We set out to determine the influence that administration of deferiprone has on urinary iron excretion at lower hemoglobin concentrations, immediately prior to transfusion. We hypothesized that hemoglobin levels will affect the ability of deferiprone to chelate iron. Ten regularly transfused patients with homozygous beta-thalassemia (HBT) aged mean +/- SD, 20.9 +/- 4.7, range 13 - 27 years, receiving long-term therapy with deferiprone, were treated with deferiprone 75 mg/kg/day, administered every 6 hours (or every 12 hours) for 72 hours immediately prior to a blood transfusion in the first month. One month later each patient received the other of the 2 dosing regimens for 72 hours immediately prior to transfusion. The deferiprone-induced 24-hour urinary iron excretion was similar during both dosing regimens; 0.56 +/- 0.45 mg/kg when L1 was given every 6 hours and 0.48 +/- 0.52 mg/kg when L1 was administered every 12 hours (p = 0.79). However, the calculated 24-hour area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC0-24) of deferiprone was significantly lower when deferiprone was administered at 6-hour intervals (6,762.8 +/- 1,601.6 mg*min/l), than that observed when deferiprone was administered every 12 hours (8,250.1 +/- 1,235.7 mg*min/l) (p = 0.04). The pharmacokinetics of deferiprone when administered immediately prior to transfusions are different from those following transfusions. More studies assessing total body iron excretion are needed to determine the contribution of the fecal route in iron excretion.  相似文献

This paper derives fundamental performance bounds for statistical estimation of parametric surfaces embedded in R3. Unlike conventional pixel-based image reconstruction approaches, our problem is reconstruction of the shape of binary or homogeneous objects. The fundamental uncertainty of such estimation problems can be represented by global confidenceregions, which facilitate geometric inference and optimization ofthe imaging system. Compared to our previous work on global confidence region analysis for curves [two-dimensional (2-D) shapes], computation of the probability that the entire surface estimate lies within the confidence region is more challenging because a surface estimate is an inhomogeneous random field continuously indexed by a 2-D variable. We derive an asymptotic lower bound to this probability by relating it to the exceedence probability of a higher dimensional Gaussian random field, which can, in turn, be evaluated using the tube formula due to Sun. Simulation results demonstrate the tightness of the resulting bound and the usefulness of the three-dimensional global confidence region approach.  相似文献

Sixty-six class-II CAD/CAM-manufactured ceramic inlays (Cerec) were placed in 27 patients. Each patient received at least one inlay luted with a dual-cured resin composite and one inlay luted with a chemically cured resin composite. The inlays were examined 5 years after luting using the California Dental Association (CDA) criteria. Eighty-nine percent of the 66 inlays were rated 'satisfactory'. During the follow-up period replacement was required for 3 inlays because of inlay fractures (4.5%) and 1 inlay because of fracture of the tooth substance (1.5%). All those inlays were luted with the dual-cured resin composite luting agent. Of the remaining 62 inlays the CDA rating 'excellent' was given to 84% for color, 97% for surface, and 81% for anatomic form. 'Excellent' margin integrity was seen in 52% of the dual-cured resin composite luted inlays and in 61% of the chemically cured resin composite luted inlays. No statistically significant (P> 0.05) difference was observed between the two luting agents.  相似文献

An electroabsorption modulator has been monolithically integrated with an extended-cavity laser, which incorporates a Bragg reflector. Actively modelocked at the fundamental cavity resonance frequency of 4.5 GHz, the laser provides a train of 6.3 ps pulses with a centre wavelength of 1544 nm onto which data is encoded by the modulator. The atmospheric effect on the upward radiance emerging from the atmosphere above a nonuniform surface results in a reduction of the separability between the surface classes by broadening the radiance probability distribution of each class, while narrowing the total radiance range. The atmospheric modulation transfer function (MTF) is used in Fourier transform analyses to simulate the atmospheric effect on the imagery of a nonuniform surface and to demonstrate the atmospheric effect on separability of field classes.  相似文献

Mathematical decision theory can be combined with heuristic techniques to attack Artificial Intelligence problems. As a first example, the problem of breaking an image into meaningful regions is considered. Bayesian decision theory is seen to provide a mechanism for including problem dependent (semantic) information in a general system. Some results are presented which make the computation feasible. The paper introduces infused design: an approach for establishing effective collaboration between designers from different engineering fields. In infused design, the design problem representation is brought up to a mathematical meta-level, which is common to all engineering disciplines. The reasoning about the problem is then done by using mathematical terminology and tools that, due to their generality, are the same for all engineers, disregarding their background. This gives engineers an opportunity to infuse their work with knowledge, methods, and solutions shared by specialists from other engineering fields. When these knowledge, methods, and solutions cross disciplinary boundaries, they are provably relevant to any problem in another domain to which it can be transformed. The suggested meta-level consists of general discrete mathematical models, called combinatorial representations (CR). Specific mathematical basis for the combinatorial representations chosen in this paper is graph theory although other representations are possible. We explain the theory of infused design and carefully contrast it with other approaches. This comparison clearly demonstrates the advantages of infused design and its potential. We conclude with several practical issues related to the introduction of infused design into practice and briefly discuss the role of information systems in infused design. A companion paper includes several examples that demonstrate the details of infused design.

Emerging network technologies have complex network interfaces that have renewed concerns about network reliability. In this paper, we present an effective low-overhead fault tolerance technique to recover from network interface failures. Failure detection is based on a software watchdog timer that detects network processor hangs and a self-testing scheme that detects interface failures other than processor hangs. The proposed self-testing scheme achieves failure detection by periodically directing the control flow to go through only active software modules in order to detect errors that affect instructions in the local memory of the network interface. Our failure recovery is achieved by restoring the state of the network interface using a small backup copy containing just the right amount of information required for complete recovery. The paper shows how this technique can be made to minimize the performance impact to the host system and be completely transparent to the user.  相似文献
