Experimental thermal hydraulic research has been conducted at Oregon State University for the purpose of assessing the performance of a new reactor design concept, the multi-application small light water reactor (MASLWR). The MASLWR is a pressurized light water reactor design with a net output of 35 MWe that uses natural circulation in both normal and transient operation. Due to its small size, portability and modularity, the MASLWR design is well suited to help fill the potential need for grid appropriate reactor designs for smaller electricity grids as may be found in developing or remote regions. The purpose of the OSU MASLWR test facility is to assess the operation of the MASLWR under normal full operating pressure and full temperature conditions and to assess the passive safety systems under transient conditions. The data generated by the testing program will be used to assess computer code calculations and to provide a better understanding of the thermal-hydraulic phenomena in the design of the MASLWR NSSS. During this testing program, four tests were conducted at the OSU MASLWR test facility. These tests included one design basis accident and one beyond design basis accident. During the performance of these tests, plant operations to include start up, normal operation and shut down evolutions were demonstrated successfully.  相似文献

It is believed that DOPA-negative melanocytes in the outer root sheath of the human hair follicle are activated, become identifiable by DOPA staining, and migrate into the epidermis during the repigmenting phase of vitiligo. These cells are difficult to identify, however, and otherwise have not been characterized. These cells are readily identified by immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, and immunoelectronmicroscopy using the antibodies NKI/beteb and A4F11, which recognize premelanosome-related antigens. The majority of the outer root sheath melanocytes were found in the mid to the upper portion of the hair follicle. Double staining revealed that these cells were distinct from HLA-DR-bearing dendritic cells. Further immunohistochemical investigation using alpha-PEP-7, alpha-PEP-1, or TMH-1 and alpha-PEP-8 antibodies revealed that outer root sheath melanocytes cannot be identified by antibodies to tyrosinase, TRP-1, or TRP-2, respectively. These cells also did not react with HMB45 antibody, which recognizes a melanosome-associated cytoplasmic antigen. We believe that the inactive outer root sheath melanocytes contain some of the early structural proteins but not any of the enzymatic proteins necessary for melanogenesis. Therefore, activation is the process whereby outer root sheath melanocytes acquire all of the structural and enzymatic proteins necessary for melanogenesis.  相似文献

The paper describes a research study on visual discrimination of textual and graphic symbols on a visual display terminal (VDT) screen when viewed at eye-lo-screen distances of 61 cm and 152 cm (24 and 60 ins). Conducted as part of a development programme at McDonnell Douglas Corporation's St. Louis Aircraft Company for an Integrated Manufacturing Composites Centre (ICC), the study investigated symbol shapes, symbol sizes, symbol colours and background colours at the two viewing distances. The longer distance is representative of required placements of the VDTs at some manufacturing workstations to avoid interference with process or control equipment. Knowledge gained from the study was incorporated in the selection of the manufacturing computer information system (CIS) terminals.

All four treatments showed significant effects on visual discrimination at both viewing distances and, particularly at the 152 cm distance, the mix of symbol and background colours was highly significant. A black screen background colour with more luminous symbols such as orange, green, yellow provided much better visual discrimination at the extended viewing distance than less luminous symbols such as red and blue on a white background. Visual discrimination at the extended viewing distance, when compared with the shorter viewing distance and using symbols of equal size, was better than the loss in visual angle would suggest.

Sex and age (to age 65) did not significantly affect visual discrimination mean scores, but the variance among individuals in the 51-65 years age group was greater than for the younger age groups.

The visual discrimination scores for symbol sizes of 4 mm2 were not significantly different from the 6 mm2 symbols at the 61 cm viewing distance. The 4 mm2 symbol size was therefore adequate for visual discrimination of standalone symbols at this distance. Although 8 mm symbols were not used in this study, projections from the data indicate that such symbol sizes at 152 cm would provide comparable discrimination scores to the 4 mm2 at 61 cm.

Improved visual discrimination of standalone symbols occurs with gaps or changes in the angles of symbols, such as sets 'C' versus 'O' and 'Xl' versus'+'.  相似文献

Abstract. Consider the following file caching problem: in response to a sequence of requests for files, where each file has a specified size and retrieval cost , maintain a cache of files of total size at most some specified k so as to minimize the total retrieval cost. Specifically, when a requested file is not in the cache, bring it into the cache and pay the retrieval cost, and remove other files from the cache so that the total size of files remaining in the cache is at most k . This problem generalizes previous paging and caching problems by allowing objects of arbitrary size and cost, both important attributes when caching files for world-wide-web browsers, servers, and proxies. We give a simple deterministic on-line algorithm that generalizes many well-known paging and weighted-caching strategies, including least-recently-used, first-in-first-out, flush-when-full, and the balance algorithm. On any request sequence, the total cost incurred by the algorithm is at most k/(k-h+1) times the minimum possible using a cache of size h ≤ k . For any algorithm satisfying the latter bound, we show it is also the case that for most choices of k , the retrieval cost is either insignificant or at most a constant (independent of k ) times the optimum. This helps explain why competitive ratios of many on-line paging algorithms have been typically observed to be constant in practice.  相似文献

An electrical nerve stimulation technique, using single tripolar electrode, was shown to be capable of recruiting motor units according to their size, while allowing simultaneous but independent control of firing rate in the active units. Test paradigms consisting of established fundamental physiological concepts of soleus-gastrocnemius architecture, motor units conduction velocity, firing rate behavior of motor units of different sizes, and their susceptibility to fatigue were employed to validate the technique and demonstrate its utility as a basic and applied research tool.  相似文献

The feasibility of a new alloy design concept utilizing the principle of ‘tungsten bronze effect’ is critically evaluated for the development of metallic bipolar plates for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). An austenitic stainless steel (ASS) is modified with W and La to improve the stability of the passive film in an acidic environment as well as to reduce the contact resistance by the tungsten bronze effect. The experimental ASS containing W and La was evaluated in a simulated PEMFC environment of H3PO4 and H2SO4 solutions at 80 °C, and the electrical property was evaluated by performing a contact resistance test. The test results show that the ASS modified with W and La has good passive film stability for corrosion resistance and low contact resistance. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis clearly suggests the possibility of the tungsten bronze effect from the change in valency state of W6+ to W5+ in the passive film formed on the modified ASS. The feasibility of a new alloy design concept utilizing the ‘tungsten bronze effect’ is well demonstrated; however, more study is highly required for the development of metallic bipolar plates of PEMFC.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The use of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the diagnosis of colonic lesions was investigated. METHODS: Some 22 patients (median age 71 years) with a colonic lesion identified on abdominal ultrasonography underwent ultrasonographically-guided FNAC using a 21-G needle. The sample was checked immediately by a cytopathologist for adequacy. RESULTS: Eighteen patients had colonic carcinoma; aspiration cytology detected malignant epithelial cells consistent with colonic carcinoma in 17 patients and severely dysplastic cells in one patient. The sensitivity and specificity of ultrasonographically-guided FNAC in the diagnosis of colonic carcinoma was 94 and 100 per cent respectively. The remaining four patients had a diagnosis of ileocaecal tuberculosis, ileocaecal Crohn's disease, and metastatic adenocarcinoma in the liver with no identifiable primary (two patients). One demonstrated granulomata, grew acid-fast bacilli and the patient was treated for tuberculosis. One had inflammatory cells and the patient was found to have Crohn's disease on histology. The remaining two patients had confirmed metastatic adenocarcinoma in the liver on aspiration cytology but suspected colonic lesions were found to be benign on cytological examination and no primary lesion was subsequently demonstrated. There were no complications of FNAC and patients complained of minimal discomfort. There has been no evidence of tumour recurrence with a median follow-up of 12 (range 1-25) months. CONCLUSION: Ultrasonographically-guided FNAC is a valid method for the diagnosis of colonic tumours.  相似文献

Two paramount observations exist regarding aneuploidy in human oocytes: its association with maternal age and its more frequent occurrence during meiosis I. Numerous experimental studies have shown that fertilization of postovulatory aged oocytes is coupled with reproductive failure and cytogenetic aberrations in embryos. However, the basic cytogenetic defect(s) of aged oocytes that causes these abnormalities has not been adequately described. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that postovulatory oocyte ageing results in increased frequencies of premature centromere separation (PCS) in metaphase II (MII) oocytes and aneuploidy in zygotes. MII oocytes and one-cell zygotes were collected from superovulated mice at different times after ovulation and fertilization. Chromosomes were C-banded and analyzed for structural and numerical aberrations. The frequencies of PCS in oocytes significantly (p < 0.01) increased with time postovulation: 15 h (15 of 529, 2.8%), 20 h (82 of 627, 13.1%), and 25 h (118 of 502, 23.5%). In zygotes, the frequencies of hyperploidy significantly (p < 0.01) increased with time post-fertilization: 0-4 h (0 of 260), 4-8 h (5 of 212, 2.4%), and 8-12 h (8 of 262, 3.1%). These data support the hypothesis that postovulatory ageing results in elevated levels of PCS in oocytes and of aneuploidy in zygotes. The link between PCS and aneuploidy may be random segregation of sister chromatids during anaphase II.  相似文献
