One of the most common difficulties arising when building roads and railway lines in seacoast areas is the high watertable in these regions. Among the applied dewatering methods, the most effective seems to be vertical drainage permanently lowering the level of underground water. Application of this method has also been carried out in Iraq. One should consider the fact that the vertical drainage method permits dewatering of not only the existing targets but also the areas designated for new construction. Lowering the watertable allows stabilization of the bed, and that secures stability and resistance of the foundation. The vertical drainage system depends upon underground water intake flowing to the drains from the directions of watershed in order to avoid its damming up under the building site. Dewatering according to the drainage system is much more efficient than open drain systems applied until now. From the technical point of view the system under discussion is much easier to operate, it consumes, less time and at the same time limits the number of people employed, workmen, engineers, and engineering equipment. Moreover, it has the advantage of dispensing with the expenses connected with the construction of passes and bridges, which are indispensable when the open drain ditches systems are applied. One opening of the proposed drainage may drain about 50 ha. The method is much more economical and much more efficient provided the whole drainage system is properly planned, and properly executed.  相似文献

Small inverted repeats (small palindromes) on plasmids have been shown to mediate a recombinational rearrangement event in Escherichia coli leading to the formation of inverted dimers (giant palindromes). This recombinational rearrangement event is efficient and independent of RecA and RecBCD. In this report, we propose a cruciform-dumbbell model to explain the inverted dimer formation mediated by inverted repeats. In this model, the inverted repeats promote the formation of a DNA cruciform which is processed by an endonuclease into a linear DNA with two hairpin loops at its ends. Upon DNA replication, this linear dumbbell-like DNA is then converted to the inverted dimer. In support of this model, linear dumbbell DNA molecules with unidirectional origin of DNA replication (ColE1 ori ) have been constructed and shown to transform E.coli efficiently resulting in the formation of the inverted dimer. The ability of linear dumbbell DNA to transform E.coli suggests that the terminal loops may be important in bypassing the requirement of DNA supercoiling for initiation of replication of the ColE1 ori.  相似文献

Three consecutive cases of pediatric myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) diagnosed over a three-year period in Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong, were described. Depending on the classification system used, they comprised two cases of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMMoL) of which one can be reclassified as juvenile chronic myeloid leukemia (JCML) and one cases of refractory anemia with excess of blasts (RAEB) or an alternative diagnosis of atypical CML. Cytogenetic abnormalities were detected in all of them on examination of bone marrow cells. Of the two CMMoL, one had monosomy 21, whereas the other had hypodiploidy. The patient with RAEB had a complex karyotype of 46,X,del(X)(q24),t(1;7) (p22;q32),add(15)(q26)(8). The balanced translocation (1;7) seen in this patient was exceedingly rare and, to the best of our knowledge, was reported only twice in the literature. The karyotypic abnormalities that we saw in our patients were not well recognized in pediatric MDS. This report emphasizes the importance of cytogenetic study in children suspected of suffering from MDS, which remains a rare disorder of childhood, and a need to rationalize current classification schemes.  相似文献

While current psychiatric taxonomies recognise a classification of amphetamine dependence, derived from the notion of an alcohol dependence syndrome, little research has validated that such a condition exists for this drug. Current amphetamine users (N = 331), were interviewed using the World Health Organization operationalisation of DSM-III-R substance dependence criteria, and a measure of the psychological components of dependence. Structural analyses indicated that a unidimensional dependence syndrome as assessed by DSM-III-R and DSM-IV criteria exists for amphetamine, and that physiological, psychological and behavioural indicators were all important in accounting for the variance in responses. It was demonstrated that the concept of a dependence syndrome is applicable to amphetamine, and that the inclusion of the amphetamine dependence syndrome in DSM-III-R and DSM-IV is valid.  相似文献

The design and test data of the combined device, which is intended to simultaneously measure the surface tensions and electron work functions of metals and alloys in static high-vacuum conditions in a temperature range of 60–400 K, are given. The measurements of the electron work function of pure Na, K, Rb, and Cs and near-eutectic alloys of the ternary Na-K-Cs system showed high reliability and accuracy of the obtained data.  相似文献

We report two cases of needle track seeding in the subcutaneous tissue and intercostal muscles following percutaneous ethanol injection for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma. In one patient, tumor seeding was observed 11 months after a total of 12 alcohol injections, and in the other patient, tumor seeding was observed 30 months after a total of 18 alcohol injections. The cases reported in the literature are discussed.  相似文献

A new member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family, FGF-13, has been molecularly cloned as a result of high throughput sequencing of a human ovarian cancer cell library. The open reading frame of the novel human gene (1419 bp) encodes for a protein of 216 a.a. with a molecular weight of 22 kDa. The FGF-13 sequence contains an amino-terminal hydrophobic region of 23 a.a. characteristic of a signal secretion sequence. FGF-13 is most homologous, 70% similarity at the amino acid level, to FGF-8. Northern hybridization analysis demonstrated prominent expression of FGF-13 in human foetal and adult brain, particularly in the cerebellum and cortex. In proliferation studies with BaF3 cells, FGF-13 preferentially activates cell clones expressing either FGF receptor variant, 3-IIIc or 4. The signal transduction pathways of FGF-13 and FGF-2 were compared in rat hippocampal astrocytes. The two FGFs induce an equivalent level of tyrosine phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and c-raf activation. However, FGF-13 is more effective than FGF-2 in inducing the phosphorylation of phospholipase C-gamma (PLC-gamma). Treatment of neuronal cultures from rat embryonic cortex with FGF-13 increases the number of glutamic acid decarboxylase immunopositive neurons, the level of high-affinity gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) uptake, and choline acetyltransferase enzyme activity. The GABAergic neuronal response to FGF-13 treatment is rapid with a significant increase occurring within 72 h. We have identified a novel member of the FGF family that is expressed in the central nervous system (CNS) and increases the number as well as the level of phenotypic differentiation of cortical neurons in vitro.  相似文献
