OBJECTIVES: An experiment was conducted to assess the effects of distraction mitigation strategies on drivers' performance and productivity while engaged in an in-vehicle information system task. BACKGROUND: Previous studies show that in-vehicle tasks undermine driver safety and there is a need to mitigate driver distraction. METHOD: An advising strategy that alerts drivers to potential dangers and a locking strategy that prevents the driver from continuing the distracting task were presented to 16 middle-aged and 12 older drivers in a driving simulator in two modes (auditory, visual) and two road conditions (curves, braking events). RESULTS: Distraction was a problem for both age groups. Visual distractions were more detrimental than auditory ones for curve negotiation, as depicted by more erratic steering, F (6, 155) = 26.76, p < .05. Drivers did brake more abruptly under auditory distractions, but this effect was mitigated by both the advising, t (155) = 8.37, p < .05, and locking strategies, t (155) = 8.49, p < .05. The locking strategy also resulted in longer minimum time to collision for middle-aged drivers engaged in visual distractions, F (6, 138) = 2.43, p < .05. CONCLUSIONS: Adaptive interfaces can reduce abrupt braking on curve entries resulting from auditory distractions and can also improve the braking response for distracted drivers. APPLICATION: These strategies can be incorporated into existing in-vehicle systems, thus mitigating the effects of distraction and improving driver performance.  相似文献

In this study, we focused on the preparation and characterization of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends as novel form‐stable phase‐change materials (PCMs) for latent‐heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) applications. In the blends, PEG acted as a PCM when PMMA was operated as supporting material. We subjected the prepared blends at different mass fractions of PEG (50, 60, 70, 80, and 90% w/w) to leakage tests by heating the blends over the melting temperature of the PCM to determine the maximum encapsulation ratio without leakage. The prepared 70/30 w/w % PEG/PMMA blend as a form‐stable PCM was characterized with optical microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The thermal properties of the form‐stable PCM were measured with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). DSC analysis indicated that the form‐stable PEG/PMMA blend melted at 58.07°C and crystallized at 39.28°C and that it had latent heats of 121.24 and 108.36 J/g for melting and crystallization, respectively. These thermal properties give the PCMs potential LHTES purposes, such as for solar space heating and ventilating applications in buildings. Accelerated thermal cycling tests also showed that the form‐stable PEG/PMMA blend as PCMs had good thermal reliability and chemical stability. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sorption of acid red 57 from aqueous solution onto sepiolite   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Sepiolite, a highly porous mineral, is becoming widely used as an alternative material in areas where sorptive, catalytic and rheological applications are required. High ion exchange capacity and high surface area and more importantly its relatively cheap price make it an attractive adsorbent. In this study, the adsorption of acid red 57 by natural mesoporous sepiolite has been examined in order to measure the ability of this mineral to remove coloured textile dyes from wastewater. For this purpose, a series of batch adsorption tests of acid red 57 from aqueous sepiolite solutions have been systematically investigated as a function of parameters such as pH, ionic strength and temperature. Adsorption equilibrium was reached within 1h. The removal of acid red 57 decreases with pH from 3 to 9 and temperature from 25 to 55 degrees C, whereas it increases with ionic strength from 0 to 0.5 mol L(-1). Adsorption isotherms of acid red on sepiolite were determined and correlated with common isotherm equations such as Langmuir and Freundlich models. It was found that the Langmuir model appears to fit the isotherm data better than the Freundlich model. The physical properties of this adsorbent were consistent with the parameters obtained from the isotherm equations. Approximately, 21.49% weight loss was observed. The surface area value of sepiolite was 342 m2 g(-1) at 105 degrees C, and it increased to 357 m2 g(-1) at 200 degrees C. Further increase in temperature caused channel plugging and crystal structure deformation, as a result the surface area values showed a decrease with temperature. The data obtained from adsorption isotherms at different temperatures have been used to calculate some thermodynamic quantities such as the Gibbs energy, heat and entropy of adsorption. The thermodynamic data indicate that acid red 57 adsorption onto sepiolite is characterized by physical adsorption. The dimensionless separation factor (RL) have shown that sepiolite can be used for removal of acid red 57 from aqueous solutions. The sorption capacity of the sepiolite is comparable to the other available adsorbents, and it is quite cheaper.  相似文献

This report specifies an information model of machine-tool-performance tests in the EXPRESS [1] language. The information model provides a mechanism for describing the properties and results of machine-tool-performance tests. The objective of the information model is a standardized, computer-interpretable representation that allows for efficient archiving and exchange of performance test data throughout the life cycle of the machine. The report also demonstrates the implementation of the information model using three different implementation methods.  相似文献

Wireless Information Delivery Environment (WIDE) is a distributed data dissemination system, which uses IEEE 802.11b technology. WIDE aims to deliver popular information services to registered mobile clients in WLAN hot spots. Data delivery is based on broadcasting and multicasting to provide scalability and efficient use of the wireless channel. Reliability is assured with a combination of Forward Error Correction (FEC), data carousel, and ARQ techniques. This paper presents the proposed system architecture with the details of reliable and secure data dissemination mechanisms. Functional evaluation of the proposed system and mechanisms on the implemented prototype are also included in this paper. Cem Ersoy received his BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from Bogazici University, Istanbul, in 1984 and 1986, respectively. He worked as an R&D engineer in NETAS A.S. between 1984 and 1986. He received his PhD in electrical engineering from Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, New York in 1992. Currently, he is a professor and department head in the Computer Engineering Department of Bogazici University. In this study, we investigated the effects of high-dose γ-ray irradiation on the mechanical and dielectric properties of polypropylene (PP)–basalt thick films. PP–basalt thick-film composites with various basalt contents from 0.5 to 10.0% were prepared by a hot-press method. The samples were exposed to γ radiation at different doses in the range 3–25 kGy. The mechanical properties of the samples, such as the Young's modulus, tensile strength, percentage strain at break, and energy at break, were examined in the context of the γ-irradiation process. Although the maximum elasticity was obtained for the unirradiated 0.5% basalt-added composite, the 6 kGy γ-irradiated PP–1.0% basalt sample exhibited the highest elasticity properties among all of the composites. The best mechanical properties, including the ultimate tensile strength and energy at break values, were achieved for the 12 kGy γ-irradiated neat PP. The dielectric properties of the PP–basalt composites were also investigated in the 100 Hz to 15 MHz frequency region at room temperature. According to the analysis of the dielectric properties, the 3 kGy γ-irradiated neat PP may have potential for microelectronic device applications that require low dielectric constant and dielectric loss materials. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of feed time of the oil phase on the average droplet size of Pickering emulsions produced in stirred tanks. Three types of impellers were tested: RT, up-pumping PBT (PBTU), and down-pumping PBT (PBTD). All the impellers were tested at two sizes, T/3 and T/2. All configurations were compared at constant tip speed, power per mass, and impeller Reynolds number. The droplet diameters were measured in Mastersizer® 3,000 (Malvern). The results showed that an increase in feed time causes a reduction in the average droplet size. At lower impeller speeds and higher feed times, the effect is more pronounced. It was found that some other geometric parameters also have an impact on the average droplet size.  相似文献

Diagnosis of small B-cell lymphomas is sometimes difficult without fresh tissue for flow cytometry (FC) or immunohistochemistry (IHC). Therefore, we examined the usefulness of a paraffin section IHC panel consisting of antibodies to CD5, CD10, CD20, CD23, CD43, and cyclin D1. We tested 55 formalin-fixed small B-cell lymphomas, including 16 small lymphocytic lymphomas (SLLs), 10 mantle cell lymphomas (MCLs), 25 follicle center lymphomas (FCLs), and 4 mantle zone lymphomas (MZLs). Seventeen cases had B5-fixed sections that were stained in the same manner. The findings were correlated with FC immunophenotyping when available. All of the SLLs and 90% of the MCLs expressed CD5 by IHC, with occasional weak expression in some MCLs. All of the FCLs and MZLs lacked CD5 expression. These results were comparable to those obtained by FC. CD43 expression was seen in 100% of the SLLs, 90% of the MCLs, and 75% of the MZLs. CD23 expression was seen in 94% of the SLL; of these, 100% also showed expression of CD23 by FC. Cyclin D1 was detected in all of the MCLs by IHC but also in 3 of the 16 SLLs. CD23 was absent in all of the MCLs. CD10 expression was present in 21 (95%) of 22 FCLs. All of the 17 cases fixed in B5 showed a decreased immunoreactivity for CD5 in the neoplastic cells. In contrast, CD10 immunoreactivity was judged better in B5-fixed sections. We concluded, therefore, that anti-CD5 and -CD10 were useful tools in the differential diagnosis of B-cell lymphomas of small lymphocytes and that a paraffin-section IHC panel consisting of antibodies to CD5, CD10, CD20, CD23, CD43, and cyclin D1 was a useful ancillary technique that compared favorably with FC.  相似文献

Surface modification of clays has become increasingly important due to the practical applications of clays such as fillers and adsorbents. The surface modification of sepiolite with [3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyl]trimethoxysilane has been employed. The modified sepiolite surface was investigated by FTIR, XRD and DTA/TG analysis. It was found that the chemical bonding takes place between the hydroxyl groups and/or oxygen atoms within the structure of sepiolite and methoxy groups of [3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyl]trimethoxysilane. The changes on electrokinetic properties of modified sepiolite particles were studied by measuring the zeta potential of particle as a function of metal concentration and equilibrium pH of solution. It was found that the zeta potential of the clay particles was always negative independent of the metal concentration in solution. This study also provides some evidence for the adsorption of metal ions on modified sepiolite. The adsorption of metal ions onto modified sepiolite has varied with the type of metal cations. The available basic nitrogen centers covalently bonded to the sepiolite skeleton were studied for Co(II), Cu(II), Mn(II), Zn(II), Fe(III) and Cd(II) adsorption from aqueous solutions. It was found that the amount of metal ion adsorbed onto modified sepiolite increases with increase in solution equilibrium pH and temperature, whereas it generally decreases with the ionic strength. The experimental data were correlated reasonably well by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and the isotherm parameters (qm and K) were calculated. The ability to adsorb the cations gave a capacity order of Zn(II) > Cu(II) ~ Co(II) > Fe(III) > Mn(II) > Cd(II) with affinities of 2.167×10−4, 1.870×10−4, 1.865×10−4, 1.193×10−4, 0.979×10−4 and 0.445×10−4 mol g−1, respectively.  相似文献
