Background

A smoking ban in all indoor public places was enforced in Italy on 10 January 2005.

Methods

We compared indoor air quality before and after the smoking ban by monitoring the indoor concentrations of fine (<2.5 μm diameter, PM2.5) and ultrafine particulate matter (<0.1 μm diameter, UFP). PM2.5 and ultrafine particles were measured in 40 public places (14 bars, six fast food restaurants, eight restaurants, six game rooms, six pubs) in Rome, before and after the introduction of the law banning smoking (after 3 and 12 months). Measurements were taken using real time particle monitors (DustTRAK Mod. 8520 TSI; Ultra‐fine Particles Counter‐TRAK Model 8525 TSI). The PM2.5 data were scaled using a correction equation derived from a comparison with the reference method (gravimetric measurement). The study was completed by measuring urinary cotinine, and pre‐law and post‐law enforcement among non‐smoking employees at these establishments

Results

In the post‐law period, PM2.5 decreased significantly from a mean concentration of 119.3 μg/m3 to 38.2 μg/m3 after 3 months (p<0.005), and then to 43.3 μg/m3 a year later (p<0.01). The UFP concentrations also decreased significantly from 76 956 particles/cm3 to 38 079 particles/cm3 (p<0.0001) and then to 51 692 particles/cm3 (p<0.01). Similarly, the concentration of urinary cotinine among non‐smoking workers decreased from 17.8 ng/ml to 5.5 ng/ml (p<0.0001) and then to 3.7 ng/ml (p<0.0001).

Conclusion

The application of the smoking ban led to a considerable reduction in the exposure to indoor fine and ultrafine particles in hospitality venues, confirmed by a contemporaneous reduction of urinary cotinine.  相似文献

The leaves at different processing stages of a single tea cultivar in order to obtain white (WT), green (GT) and black tea (BT) samples, were analysed. The capacities of tea polyphenolics to influence the glucose and lipid metabolism in HepG2 cell lines were evaluated. WT appeared the most active in reducing the glucose and cholesterol uptake (+17.7% and +32.4% in the glucose and cholesterol cell medium concentration, respectively). Incubation with WT enhanced LDL receptor binding activity by 40% (+20% for GT and +0% for BT) and led to an increase in HDL cell medium concentration of 33.3% (+20% for GT and +0% for BT). Finally, WT revealed the best inhibition capacity against lipase activity, and triglyceride levels in the cell medium increased by 400% (+382.6% for GT and +191.3% for BT). The present study intended to contribute to the little knowledge about the potential health benefits of white tea in individuals affected by metabolic syndrome.  相似文献

As deployed Grids increase from tens to thousands of nodes, peer-to-peer (P2P) techniques and protocols can be used to implement scalable services and applications. The super-peer model is a novel approach that helps the convergence of P2P models and Grid environments and can be used to deploy a P2P information service in Grids. A super-peer serves a single physical organization in a Grid, and manages metadata associated to the resources provided by the nodes of that organization. Super-peers connect to each other to form a peer network at a higher level. This paper examines how the super-peer model can handle membership management and resource discovery services in a multi-organizational Grid. A simulation analysis evaluates the performance of a resource discovery protocol; simulation results can be used to tune protocol parameters in order to increase search efficiency.  相似文献

Herein we describe the synthesis of a series of new potent tachykinin NK2 receptor antagonists by the modulation of the C‐ and N‐terminal moieties of ibodutant (MEN 15596, 1 ). The N‐terminal benzo[b]thiophene ring was replaced by different substituted naphthalenes and benzofurans, while further modifications were evaluated at the C‐terminal tetrahydropyran moiety. Most compounds demonstrated a high affinity for the human NK2 receptor and high in vitro antagonist potency, indicating that a wide range of substituents at both termini can be incorporated in the molecule without detrimental effects on the interactions with the NK2 receptor. Selected compounds were tested in vivo confirming their activity as NK2 antagonists. In particular, after both iv and id administration to guinea pig, compound 61 b was able to antagonize NK2‐induced colonic contractions with a potency and duration‐of‐action fully comparable to the reference compound 1 (MEN 15596, ibodutant).  相似文献

More than two hundred years after its discovery, lactate still remains an intriguing molecule. Considered for a long time as a waste product of metabolism and the culprit behind muscular fatigue, it was then recognized as an important fuel for many cells. In particular, in the nervous system, it has been proposed that lactate, released by astrocytes in response to neuronal activation, is taken up by neurons, oxidized to pyruvate and used for synthesizing acetyl-CoA to be used for the tricarboxylic acid cycle. More recently, in addition to this metabolic role, the discovery of a specific receptor prompted a reconsideration of its role, and lactate is now seen as a sort of hormone, even involved in processes as complex as memory formation and neuroprotection. As a matter of fact, exercise offers many benefits for our organisms, and seems to delay brain aging and neurodegeneration. Now, exercise induces the production and release of lactate into the blood which can reach the liver, the heart, and also the brain. Can lactate be a beneficial molecule produced during exercise, and offer neuroprotection? In this review, we summarize what we have known on lactate, discussing the roles that have been attributed to this molecule over time.  相似文献

A new approach for nonenzymatic glucose sensing, based on a simple modification of epoxy-silver surfaces deposited on the tip of commercial copper electric wires, is presented. Palladium was galvanically displaced on the surface of the epoxy-silver surface in order to obtain metal nanoparticles that act as catalyst for the direct oxidation of glucose. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the formation of the metal nanoparticles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the metallic nature of the formed nanostructures on the surface. Electrochemical characterization and calibration of the palladium-modified epoxy-silver electrode is reported, obtaining a linear range of 1–20 mM for the detection of glucose with low interference of ascorbic acid and uric acid. A simple 3-step coulometry was used as the detection technique. The developed sensing material is believed to be a great candidate for integration in small devices for clinical essays, due to the simplicity and cost effectiveness of the presented approach, compared to the state-of-the-art devices reported recently in the literature. Simplicity in the coulometry determinations makes these Pd-modified epoxy-silver sensors a good candidate for easy glucose determinations.  相似文献

Results of a research project aimed at studying the capability to develop a method (economic and simple) for on-board biodiesel blending detection are described. The method is based on the direct measurement of the Indicated Mean Effective Pressure (IMEP).The study was carried out on a 2.0L four-cylinder “torque-controlled” Euro 5 diesel engine for passenger car (PC) application. This engine, equipped with instrumented glow plug for combustion closed-loop control, represents the state of the art of the diesel engine control technology.Two biodiesels were chosen for the experiments: a rapeseed methyl-ester (RME) and an aged RME, while the conventional diesel fuel was an European (EU) certification diesel fuel.Results indicate generally a good response in blending detection of the method. However, in order to attain an acceptable accuracy, a pre-calibration appears necessary.  相似文献

Porous acicular mullite (ACM) ceramics are known to be mechanically robust even at high porosities. This study was undertaken to better understand what aspects of acicular mullite's needle-like microstructure affect the overall mechanical properties and how the microstructure might be modified to improve mechanical performance. ACMs with a variety of porosities, pore sizes, and needle diameters were produced, and their elastic moduli, flexure strengths, and fracture toughnesses were measured. Three-dimensional image analysis was an invaluable tool in determining the needle diameters of these complex 3D network structures. It was found that porosity was the most dominant factor in determining the mechanical properties of ACM and that its behavior could be described using the Gibson–Ashby foam model.  相似文献

Acicular mullite (ACM) is a highly porous ceramic with a needlelike microstructure. Next-generation ACM-based diesel particulate filters will require porosities >60%, making optimizing ACM's mechanical properties a key area of interest. A prior study determined that, for the range of microstructures evaluated, the elastic modulus, strength, and fracture toughness were largely functions of total porosity and not needle or pore size, consistent with the Gibson–Ashby foam model. Therefore, alternate strengthening and toughening methods were sought. Doping the ACM precursor with either MgO or Nd2O3 produced ACM microstructures that appeared similar but had differing bulk mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of the mullite needles, the intergranular glassy phase, and the mullite–glass interface of the ACMs were investigated, but no major differences were found. Using X-ray computed tomography, a 3D imaging technique, it was found that MgO-doping of the ACM created a less uniform, and thus weaker, microstructure than Nd2O3-doping.  相似文献
