A wind park reduced-order model using singular perturbations theory

Due to the increasing penetration of wind energy, it is necessary to possess design tools that are able to simulate the impact of these installations on electric utility grids. In order to provide a net contribution to this issue, a detailed wind park model has been developed and is briefly presented. However, the computational costs associated with the performance of such a detailed model in describing the behavior of a wind park composed by a considerable number of units may render its practical application very difficult. To overcome this problem, singular perturbations theory has been applied to reduce the order of the detailed wind park model, and therefore create the conditions for the development of a dynamic equivalent which is able to retain the relevant dynamics with respect to the existing AC power system. Validation results proving the ability of singular perturbations reduced order model to match the results provided by the detailed model are shown and commented upon     

Cold tests of open coaxial resonators in the range 9–17 GHz

A study of selective properties of coaxial open cylindrical resonators have been conducted experimentally and compared with theory. The resonator consists of an inner circular cylinder symmetrically located inside an outer weakly irregular open waveguide. Several fundamental TE modes were identified over the range 9 to 17 GHz through measurements of the resonant frequencies and the associated loaded quality factors. It has been verified that the structure and the number of resonant modes are both strongly dependent on the diameter of the coaxial insert. Such an electrodynamical system proves to be useful in guided wave applications requiring, for example, filters, frequency-tunable resonators and devices for analyzing the modal composition of a signal.     

Early American neurologic textbooks

Although European treatises were translated and available to American doctors interested in neurology during the 19th century, the early American neurologic textbooks were distinctive in their comprehensive integration of basic and clinical science. William A. Hammond, in 1871, published the first comprehensive American textbook of neurology, preceding the manuals by Gowers (1886) and Oppenheim (1894) by more than a decade. Four other American adult neurologic textbooks expanded on Hammond's model and incorporated other important topics, including neurologic anatomy, the formal examination, neurochemistry, and complete bibliographies. Bernard Sachs' 1895 textbook was the first pediatric neurologic textbook published in America and made significant contributions to the organization of childhood neurologic disorders. These works functioned as centralized resources for neurologic information, were influential educational tools, and helped foster a growing appreciation of the American neurologic school both nationally and internationally.

4-Pentafluoroethylumbelliferyl-beta-D-glucoside is proposed as an efficient substrate for human leukocyte acid beta-glucosidase. Its synthesis is described. This substrate was compared directly with 4-trifluoromethylumbelliferyl-beta-D-glucoside synthesized by us earlier and with 4-methylumbelliferyl-beta-D-glucoside which is commonly used for acid beta-glucosidase activity assay. The specific activity of acid beta-glucosidase with 4-pentafluoroethylumbelliferyl-beta-D-glucoside was 3- and 8-fold higher than it was with the substrates mentioned above. The kinetic parameters KM and VMAX for human leukocyte acid beta-glucosidase with the three substrates was determined. One possible application of the newly synthesized substrate is its use in the diagnosis of acid beta-glucosidase hereditary deficiency (Gaucher's disease).     

9-Benzyladenines: potent and selective cAMP phosphodiesterase inhibitors

A 6-year-old Quarter Horse gelding with acute onset of a grade-4/5 lameness of the left forelimb 21 days after an encounter with a porcupine was examined. Quills had been removed by the referring veterinarian, and the horse had been treated with antibiotics and hydrotherapy for 14 days. The horse was pyretic and had effusion in the digital synovial sheath. Signs of pain were elicited on palpation of the area. A tentative diagnosis of septic tenosynovitis caused by a porcupine quill was made. Exploratory tenoscopy revealed large amounts of fibrin in the sheath and a 1.2-cm quill. Bacteriologic culture of synovial fluid yielded a pure growth of Staphylococcus aureus. The horse improved dramatically after tenoscopic removal of the quill, debridement of fibrin, and lavage to dilute inflammatory mediators and bacteria, debridement of fibrin, discovery and removal of a quill, and complete evaluation of the sheath for prognostic purposes. Tenoscopy can provide a means for direct observation and enhance the ability of clinicians to debride a septic synovial sheath in a minimally invasive manner.     

Palatopharyngeal surgery. A study of its effectiveness in the treatment of obstructive apnea syndrome during sleep

Palatopharyngeal surgery is a therapeutic option for obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS). This operation is based on the assumption that the soft palate is the principal apneogenic area of the upper airways. The effectiveness of palatopharyngeal surgery and of correcting nasal obstruction (co-adjuvant factor of SAOS), when present, was evaluated. Thirty patients were selected by cephalometry for surgery (3 women, 27 men; age 45.3 +/- 7.5 years). The success rate was 60%, which justifies the inclusion of surgery as a useful option for treating SAOS.     

Phase transmittance RBF neural networks

Presented is a new complex valued radial basis function (RBF) neural network with phase transmittance between the input nodes and output, which makes it suitable for channel equalisation on quadrature digital modulation systems.     

Trade-offs in scan path and BIST implementations for RAMs

In this article we propose efficient scan path and BIST schemes for RAMs. Tools for automatic generation of these schemes have been implemented. They reduce the design effort and thus allow the designer to select the more appropriate scheme with respect to various constraints.
