This study examined the moderating roles of marital warmth and recent life events in the association between observed marital hostility and changes in spouses’ depressive symptoms over 3 years. Using the actor-partner interdependence model (APIM), structural equation models (N = 416 couples) suggested that husbands’ marital hostility was significantly related to increases in wives’ depressive symptoms. Moderator analyses showed that husbands’ warmth and wives’ warmth moderate the association between marital hostility and change in wives’ depressive symptoms. The association between husbands’ hostility and increases in wives’ depressive symptoms was stronger under conditions of lower levels of husbands’ warmth than under conditions of higher levels of husbands’ warmth. This same pattern was found for wives’ warmth. Regarding life events, the association between wives’ hostility and increases in husbands’ depressive symptoms was stronger for couples with more recent life events than for couples with fewer recent life events. A testing effect occurs when a learner performs better on a retention test after studying the material and taking a practice-retention test than after studying the material twice. In the present study, 282 participants watched a narrated animation about lightning formation and then watched the presentation again (restudy), took a practice-retention test (practice-retention), or took a practice-transfer test (practice-transfer). First, the testing effect was replicated with multimedia material, such that the practice-retention group outperformed the restudy group on a delayed retention test. Second, a testing effect was found for taking a practice-transfer test, such that the practice-transfer group outperformed the restudy group on a delayed transfer test. Third, the results supported a transfer-appropriate processing explanation of the testing effect, in which the practice-retention group outperformed the practice-transfer group on delayed retention but the opposite pattern was obtained on delayed transfer. When research designed to close the disparities gap is conducted in real-world health care settings, unique sensitivities may arise, particularly when race is the focus of interventions. Researchers encountered this issue in the course of a randomized trial investigating the influence of ethnic identity (EI) among African American (AA) study participants. The study was conducted by the research programs at three health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and the University of Michigan Center for Health Communications Research, as described in this issue of the journal (Resnicow et al., 2009). This commentary describes the research partnership’s concerns for the racially sensitive nature of the study and the precautions undertaken to mitigate them. Detailed microscopy of two crept aluminas, one with (AD99) and one without (Lucalox) a grain boundary glassy phase, has been performed to determine the pertinent damage mechanisms during creep. Evidence is presented for a nucleation-controlled cavitation process where creep cavities nucleate primarily on two-grain facets, followed by cavity growth and coalescence to form grain-facet-sized cavities and microcracks. A variety of creep cavity morphologies were observed in Lucalox, including spheroidal and irregularly shaped cavities. The latter finding implies a strong influence of crystallographic orientation and the corresponding surface energy of the cavitated planes on the cavity shape. In contrast, classical spheroidal cavities were observed in AD99 due to the presence of a viscous phase along grain boundaries. Direct evidence for grain boundary sliding as the process driving force for cavitation in Lucalox is presented together with evidence for the nucleation of creep cavities at grain boundary ledges. These findings are compared to the grain boundary sliding (GBS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements performed previously on the same systems. Based on this study, the cavity nucleation process in the glassy-phase- and non-glassy-phase-containing aluminas is apparently similar as both involve the nucleation of rows of equally sized and equally spaced cavities. 相似文献

We report on our investigation of a new verification tool, the Symbolic Model Verifier (SMV), created at Carnegie Mellon University. We have successfully, employed this tool to detect deadlock in an industrial design, namely, Hewlett-Packard's Summit bus converter chips. In addition to locating a known deadlock in the original chip design and checking its solution, we successfully detected other previously unknown defects in the design. In our experiments, we were able to verify properties on finite-state models of the circuit with 150 to 200 state variables in a matter of minutes. 相似文献

This exploratory qualitative study was conducted to examine the meaning of career and related concepts for adult American Indians. Eighteen Northern Plains American Indians were interviewed, and the resulting data were analyzed using consensual qualitative research strategies (C. E. Hill, B. J. Thompson, and E. N. Williams, 1997). Five major topic areas emerged from the data: the meaning of career, definitions of success, supportive factors, obstacles, and living in 2 worlds. Within these domains, several categories emerged, with differences noted between those participants with postsecondary education and those with secondary education in 3 of the domains. Following discussion of and comparison of the categories across the 2 groups, implications for future research and theory development are presented.
