Spatially resolved spectral interferometry is used to measure the mode content of a Yb-doped photonic-crystal fiber rod amplifier with a 2300 μm(2) mode area. The technique, known as S(2) imaging, was adapted for the short fiber amplifier at full power and revealed a small amount of a copolarized LP(11) mode. Simulations illustrate the potential for weak mode suppression in this fiber and agree qualitatively with the measurements of S(2) and M(2). Higher-order-mode content depends on the alignment of the input signal at injection and ranged from -18 dB for optimized alignment to -13 dB when the injection alignment was offset along the LP(11) axis by 30% of the 55 μm mode-field diameter.  相似文献

This article proposes an alternative way to use carbon nanotubes to improve the performance of carbon fibre-reinforced composites. A chemical process, based on esterification of surface groups, is used to anchor nanotubes onto carbon fibre surface. Anchored nanotubes form a network surrounding the carbon fibres. After CNT anchoring, the tow is impregnated with an epoxy resin and tensile tests are performed on this minicomposite sample. By enhancing matrix properties and fibre/matrix interface, the CNT network has a significant influence on the composite strength.  相似文献

Aided phytostabilisation is a cost-efficient technique to manage metal-contaminated areas, particularly in the presence of extensive pollution. Plant establishment and survival in highly metal-contaminated soils are crucial for phytostabilisation success, as metal toxicity for plants is widely reported. A relevant phytostabilisation solution must limit metal transfer through the food chain. Therefore, this study aimed at evaluating the long-term efficiency of aided phytostabilisation on former agricultural soils highly contaminated by cadmium, lead, and zinc. The influence of afforestation and fly ash amendments on reducing metal phytoavailability was investigated as were their effects on plant development. Before being planted with a tree mix, the site was divided into three plots: a reference plot with no amendment, a plot amended with silico-aluminous fly ash and one with sulfo-calcic fly ash. Unlike Salix alba and Quercus robur, Alnus glutinosa, Acer pseudoplatanus and Robinia pseudoacacia grew well on the site and accumulated, overall, quite low concentrations of metals in their leaves and young twigs. This suggests that these three species have an excluder phenotype for Cd, Zn and Pb. After 8 years, metal availability to A. glutinosa, A. pseudoplatanus and R. pseudoacacia, and translocation to their above-ground parts, strongly decreased in fly ash-amended soils. Such decreases fit well together with the depletion of CaCl2-extractable metals in amended soils. Although both fly ashes were effective to decrease Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations in above-ground parts of trees, the sulfo-calcic ash was more efficient.  相似文献

A sensitivity analysis was conducted on an in vitro gastrointestinal digestion test (i) to investigate the influence of a low variation of gastric juice pH on the bioaccessibility of Cd and Pb in smelter-contaminated soils (FB, using the unified bioaccessibility method UBM) and fractions of metals that may be transported across the intestinal epithelium (FA, using the diffusive gradient in thin film technique), and (ii) to provide a better understanding of the significance of pH in health risk assessment through ingestion of soil by children. The risk of metal exposure to children (hazard quotient, HQ) was determined for conditions that represent a worst-case scenario (i.e., ingestion rate of 200 mg day− 1) using three separate calculations of metal daily intake: estimated daily intake (EDI), bioaccessible EDI (EDI-FB), and oral bioavailable EDI (EDI-FA). The increasing pH from 1.2 to 1.7 resulted in: (i) no significant variation in Cd-FB in the gastric phase but a decrease in the gastrointestinal phase; (ii) a decrease in soluble Pb in the gastric phase and a significant variation in Pb-FB in the gastrointestinal phase; (iii) a significant decrease in Cd-FA and no variation in Pb-FA; (iv) no change in EDI-FB and EDI-FA HQs for Cd; (v) a significant decrease in EDI-FB HQs and no significant variation in EDI-FA HQ for Pb. In the analytical conditions, these results show that risk to children decreases when the bioavailability of Pb in soils is taken into account and that the studied pH values do not affect the EDI-FA HQs. The present results provide evidence that the inclusion of bioavailability analysis during health risk assessment could provide a more realistic estimate of Cd and Pb exposure, and opens a wide field of practical research on this topic (e.g., in contaminated site management).  相似文献

Novel applications and analytical methods have been utilized to gain information about a wide range of contaminants in the biosphere soil, water, and air, with information available on both past (dendrochemistry) and present (phytoscreening). Heart transplantation is facing a shortage of grafts. Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD) would constitute a new potential of available organs. In the present work, we aimed to evaluate whether Postconditioning (ischemic or with ciclosporin-A (CsA)) could reduce ischemia-reperfusion injury in a cardiac arrest model when applied at the start of reperfusion or after a delay. An isolated rat heart model was used as a model of DCD. Hearts were submitted to a cardiac arrest of 40 min of global warm ischemia (37 °C) followed by 3 h of 4 °C-cold preservation, then 60 min reperfusion. Hearts were randomly allocated into the following groups: control, ischemic postconditioning (POST, consisting of two episodes each of 30 s ischemia and 30 s reperfusion at the onset of reperfusion), and CsA group (CsA was perfused at 250 nM for 10 min at reperfusion). In respective subgroups, POST and CsA were applied after a delay of 3, 10, and 20 min. Necrosis was lower in CsA and POST versus controls (p < 0.01) whereas heart functions were improved (p < 0.01). However, while the POST lost its efficacy if delayed beyond 3 min of reperfusion, CsA treatment surprisingly showed a reduction of necrosis even if applied after a delay of 3 and 10 min of reperfusion (p < 0.01). This cardioprotection by delayed CsA application correlated with better functional recovery and higher mitochondrial respiratory index. Furthermore, calcium overload necessary to induce mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP) opening was similar in all cardioprotection groups, suggesting a crucial role of MPTP in this delayed protection of DCD hearts.  相似文献

Mutations in GPR179 are one of the most common causes of autosomal recessive complete congenital stationary night blindness (cCSNB). This retinal disease is characterized in patients by impaired dim and night vision, associated with other ocular symptoms, including high myopia. cCSNB is caused by a complete loss of signal transmission from photoreceptors to ON-bipolar cells. In this study, we hypothesized that the lack of Gpr179 and the subsequent impaired ON-pathway could lead to myopic features in a mouse model of cCSNB. Using ultra performance liquid chromatography, we show that adult Gpr179−/− mice have a significant decrease in both retinal dopamine and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, compared to Gpr179+/+ mice. This alteration of the dopaminergic system is thought to be correlated with an increased susceptibility to lens-induced myopia but does not affect the natural refractive development. Altogether, our data added a novel myopia model, which could be used to identify therapeutic interventions.  相似文献
