Believing what you feel: Using proprioceptive feedback to reduce unilateral neglect.

Unilateral spatial neglect declines when participants reach to grip the center of long metal rods compared with when they point to the perceived center, suggesting that visuomotor control systems are less affected by neglect than other representational systems (I. H. Robertson, D. Nico, & B. Hood, 1995). In this study, 16 participants with unilateral left neglect actually picked up rods, and we predicted short-term improvements in neglect because of induced conflict between a phenomenally symmetrical visual world on the one hand and a proprioceptively conveyed rightward-biased world on the other. With participants serving as their own controls, significant short-term improvements in neglect were found on 2 out of 4 neglect tasks after participants experienced proprioceptive feedback discrepant from the judgments they made on the basis of visual information alone. Distributed Coordination and Workflow on the World Wide Web

This paper describes WebFlow, an environment thatsupports distributed coordination services on theWorld Wide Web. WebFlow leverages the HTTP Webtransport protocol and consists of a number of toolsfor the development of applications that require thecoordination of multiple, distributed servers.Typical applications of WebFlow include distributeddocument workspaces, inter/intra-enterprise workflow,and electronic commerce. In this paper we describe thegeneral WebFlow architecture for distributedcoordination, and then focus on the environment fordistributed workflow.     

Nondegradative microextrusion of resorbable polyesters for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications: The cases of poly‐lactic‐acid and poly‐caprolactone

In recent years biodegradable polymers, particularly polyesters such as the poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL), have gained high interests for their applicability in the biomedical and pharmaceutical fields where they're used for manufacturing various different resorbable devices, from tissue engineering scaffolds to controlled drug release systems. Despite many positive characteristics, processability of these materials still remains a critical issue as they easily tend to degrade during manufacturing. In this article we aimed to assess microextrusion as a nondegradative process for manufacturing PLA and PCL. The results we experimentally obtained, that are hereby presented, set a new point in the on‐going debate on degradation during processing of resorbable polymers as they allow to affirm that microextrusion leaves unmodified molecular weight distributions without producing any evident reductions in mean molecular weight. Microextrusion thus represents a risk‐free high molecular weight polymer processing solution for obtaining nondegraded products within pharmaceutical and biomedical production lines, such as for scaffolds for tissue engineering applications or drug delivery. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Treatment of aggression for an adult diagnosed with schizophrenia at a public psychiatric hospital.

The effectiveness of a behavioral program to treat chronic aggression in an adult male individual diagnosed with schizophrenia at a public psychiatric hospital was evaluated. A behavioral plan was developed to provide the client with positive social interactions, social skills training, and positive reinforcement for prosocial behavior; no negative consequences were implemented. The number of aggressive acts declined with the introduction of the behavioral plan and ultimately remitted even without ongoing reinforcers. This article demonstrates the value of psychological intervention in treating aggression with a treatment-resistant client in an in-patient setting. On the Use of the Flickermeter to Limit Low-Frequency Interharmonic Voltages

The possibility of using the IEC flickermeter for the assessment of the limits of low frequency interharmonic voltages is critically analyzed. The response of flickermeters to interharmonic components is analytically investigated, obtaining approximation formulas for the calculation of Pst in the presence of couples of components at frequencies that are symmetric with reference to the fundamental and in the presence of one or more single components. The instrument characteristics and limitations are also highlighted, using the results obtained from a numerical implementation of the IEC flickermeter. Finally, the general problem of the limits of low frequency interharmonic voltages is discussed and practical solutions are proposed.     

EGF/EGF-R system and benign breast disease during and following the treatment of gynaecological pathologies with an analogue of LH-RH

Clinical and pathological changes of the mammary gland have been studied in 64 women affected by symptomatic Benign Breast Disease (BBD) coexisting with endometriosis or uterine leiomyomata. These patients were rendered hypoestrogenic by subcutaneous administration of the LH-RH analogue Goserelin depot [D-ser (tBu)6 Aza-Gly10-GnRH (ICI118630)] performed every 28 days, for six months. They were evaluated clinically and ultrasonographically before and after treatment to find possible changes of BBD as well as of endometriosis or uterine leiomyomata. Mammary biopsies were performed before and after treatment in all the patients to study the changes of EGF-R expression. Results showed that clinical improvement is accompanied with a reduction of EGF-R expression.     

Modulation of the enzymatic activity of papain by interdomain residues remote from the active site

The two main catalytic residues Cys25 and Hisl59 of the monomericcysteine protease papain are located on different walls of acleft formed by two domains. This topology suggests a possiblerelationship between relative domain organization and catalyticmechanism. The effect on enzymatic parameters of structuralmodifications at various locations of the twodomain interfaceof papain was examined by individual or double replacementsby Ala of pairs of interacting residues. Most modificationshad no effect on enzyme activity. However, the enzyme's substrateturnover (k_cat) decreased following simultaneous alterationof the two most conserved residues, forming an apolar contactlocated 15 Å away from the active site. The pH activityprofile of the double mutant was unchanged, indicating a conservedionization state of the active site thiolate-imidazolium ionpair. This state is strongly dependent on the distance separatingthe two residues, thus suggesting that the active site geometryhas not been significantly altered. Efficient enzymatic activityin papain requires more than a correct active site geometryand is influenced by domain packing properties in a region remotefrom the active site.
