A method for the assessment of the performance of high-speed analogue/digital convertors

A method is proposed for the measurement of the accuracy of high-speed analogue/digital convertors, using automatic digital counting of the occupancy of each quantisation level by a known input signal. The results provide a dynamic quantisation characteristic and can be related to specific quantiser defects.     

Measurement of negative conductance of a Gunn device

Measurements are reported of the frequency dependence of the maximum negative conductance which can be realised by a Gunn device operating as an oscillator in the delayed-domain mode. A theoretical value is found for the frequency at which the maximum negative conductance reaches a peak value, and this is found to be in good agreement with the measurements.     

Design of a positive resist for projection lithography in the mid-UV

The design, synthesis, formulation, and process optimization of a new mid-UV resist are described. The synthesis of a spectrally matched sensitizer was guided by semiempirical quantum mechanical calculations that predict the effect of structural changes on optical absorption characteristics. The formulation was guided by computer profile simulation studies and the process development by a response surface analytical procedure. These techniques allowed formulation optimization to be achieved on the basis of an understanding of the complex interactions between the resist dissolution response functions and the modulation transfer function of the exposure tool for which the resist was designed.     

Altered electrodermal responsivity associated with clinical pain

We used certain physiologic maneuvers to perturb the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in an attempt to detect a link between the ANS and pain. In the unperturbed state, we found no difference in the electrodermal response among normal controls, preoperative patients (increased stress without pain) and postoperative patients (increased stress and pain). The electrodermal response elicited by autonomic maneuvers was significantly attenuated in postoperative patients but not in preoperative patients or in normal control subjects.     

Tissue reactions induced by Schistosoma mansoni in Biomphalaria glabrata

In Biomphalaria glabrata with a strong natural resistance, Schistosoma mansoni sporocysts are rapidly encapsulated by granulocytes and killed, mainly by the strong phagocytic activity of the cells. Irradiated Echinostoma paraensei sporocysts seem able to suppress the function of the granulocytes. Tissue reactions in snails with self-cure demonstrate: involvement of two types of cells, granulocytes and hyalinocyte-like cells; formation of amoeba-fibrous capsules; limited tendency of granulocytes to become attracted to the parasites; a slow process of parasite destruction; and a possible involvement of humoral factors. It seems that there is partial suppression of the granulocyte function in smails with self-cure.
