A House of Prayer for all Peoples? The Unique Case of Somerville College Chapel,Oxford

Multifaith buildings have become common in Europe, North America, and much of the world, but they have yet to receive sufficient scholarly attention in the history of religious ideas, or in the theory of material religion. This paper begins to address this lacuna by the consideration of an early, but little known, multifaith chapel donated to Somerville College Oxford in the 1930s, which is unique within Oxford University. Its history, architecture, and artworks give valuable insights into the religious, intellectual, and cultural roots of what would subsequently become a global norm. The chapel can be seen as both a manifestation of the aspirations of liberal Christianity in the interwar years, including the advancement of women and ecumenism, and of the contestation of the role of religion in higher education among elites in the same period. Examining the case of Somerville chapel contributes to the theory of religion by considering how unbelief and multifaith ideas may be attempted to be materially expressed, and how this physical presence subsequently may impact on institutions and people through ongoing contestation, and negotiated use.     

The Influence of Governance on the Provision of Urban Environmental Infrastructure and Services for Low-income Groups

This paper describes the inadequacies in the provision for water, sanitation and solid waste collection in nine cities in Africa, Asia and Latin America and discusses the main explanatory factors. These include the quality and capacity of each city's local government, and the nature of its relationship with citizen groups and non-governmental organizations within the city and with governments at provincial/state or national level. The paper highlights the many political constraints on ensuring healthier living and working environments for lower-income groups, including those rooted in local government structures and perceptions, as well as those related to low per capita incomes and poor economic performance.     

Factors Associated with Use of Interactive Cancer Communication System: An Application of the Comprehensive Model of Information Seeking

In order to provide insights about cancer patients' online information seeking behaviors, the present study analyzes individuals' transaction log data and reports on how demographics, disease‐related factors, and psychosocial needs predict patterns of service use within a particular Interactive Cancer Communication System (ICCS). Study sample included 294 recently diagnosed breast cancer patients. Data included pretest survey scores of demographic, disease‐related, and psychosocial factors and automatically collected ICCS use data over the 4‐month intervention. Statistical analyses correlated pre‐test survey scores with subsequent, specific types of ICCS service usage. Patterns of online cancer information seeking differed according to the patients' characteristics, suggesting that lower income, less educated women and those lacking in information‐seeking competence use the computer and online services to the same or a greater degree if those services are made available to them. Results of this study can inform more effective resource development for future eHealth applications.     

Management of stream compensation for a large conjunctive use scheme,Shropshire, UK

The Shropshire Groundwater Scheme (SGS) is the largest conjunctive use scheme in the United Kingdom. The SGS operates in drought periods, pumping water from the Permo‐Triassic Sandstone aquifer in Shropshire, England to regulate flows in the River Severn, alongside releases from conventional surface water reservoirs. This regulation protects the environment and increases the security of supply of major public water supply abstractions downstream. An important operational consideration is the impact SGS groundwater abstraction has on small streams that rise on the Shropshire Permo‐Triassic Sandstone. Compensation boreholes have been installed to maintain flows during and after the operation of the SGS. This paper shows how a groundwater model of the East Shropshire Permo‐Triassic Sandstone has been used to estimate the required level of compensation flows for recent climatic conditions to optimise the use of the SGS. The catchment wide conditions are included in this analysis by using the results of a large‐scale surface water model of the River Severn.

Neoliberalism and changing regional policy in Australia

This paper examines the role of neoliberalism in shaping Australian federal regional development policy over the past three decades. As in other parts of the world, since the 1980s Australian federal governments have tended to favour the role of market forces, as opposed to direct intervention in regional development. By the 1990s, however, the negative social and economic impacts of neoliberal approaches, together with a widespread electoral backlash, contributed to an adjustment in the direction of regional development policy. We argue that this transition is reflective of a wider shift in neoliberal politics, whereby limited government intervention and institution building are increasingly seen as appropriate policy responses. While in part this is linked to the shortcomings of previous policy approaches, it is also apparent that political opportunism is an important element of this shift.
