The multicultural perspective in therapy: A social constructionist approach.

Discusses the theoretical and clinical applications of the postmodern paradigm of social constructionism as a basis for counseling culturally different clients. Such applications avoid the trap of perpetuating the status-quo when working with minority and marginalized clientele. The main points of multiculturalism and social constructionism are summarized, and issues of mutual concern to both perspectives are examined. Applications to psychotherapy are explored, and the challenges of applying the social constructionist approach to culturally competent counseling are discussed. Treating addictive patients at suicidal risk.

Presents a model for conceptualizing 4 basic types of suicidality among substance abusers (avoidance of painful consequences, the depressive experience of "crashing," the threat of personal loss, and environmental strain) and offers practical tips for treating the problem. Four general forms of intervention are discussed: pacing the crisis encounter; desensitizing the patient's sense of desperation; talking frankly about the suicidality; and attending to one's own needs as a counselor. These crisis-intervention tips are intended to aid counselors in handling suicidality as it is manifested in substance-abusing populations. The effects of social skills curricula: Now you see them, now you don't.

Discusses the generalization effects of 7 commercially available student social-skills training (SST) curricula. A table listing strategy, curricula, S characteristics, and results is given. Maintenance of improved behavior was seen as least successful when the "train and hope" strategy was used. The combination of SST and alteration of consequences in the classroom led to the most significant maintenance of results. The most effective programs were those that combined a variety of techniques. Improvement of behavior was obtained more often with withdrawn students than with aggressive students. The NC-REN meets the North Carolina Information Highway

The North Carolina Research and Education Network (NC-REN), formerly known as CONCERT, is an existing video and data network, owned and operated by MCNC. NC-REN's purpose has been to provide network-based support for collaboration in the research community within the state since 1985. The first major application planned for the North Carolina Information Highway (NCIH) is an interactive video distance learning system. A secondary application proposed is the use of Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS) as a means of providing data communications services over NCIH. The user community currently supported by NC-REN has come to expect high levels of service, reliability, interoperability and performance for data and video communications. MCNC is committed to see that NC-REN users receive service that is equal to or better than what is currently provided by the existing network. The prospect of migrating NC-REN-provided services to NCIH-provided transport has raised challenging technical and unique service issues     

Strategies and automaticity: I. Basic findings and conceptual framework.

Evaluated the contributions of strategic and data-driven factors to skilled performance by manipulating the predictability of the class of stimuli used in a memory search task. In Exp 1, when consistent mapping (CM) and varied mapping (VM) conditions were blocked, large performance differences were observed; however, when CM and VM trials were mixed, performance differences were reduced. In Exp 2, mixed training led to a less skilled performance than blocked training. Moreover, transfer conditions revealed a critical interval for learning to adopt and deploy differential response strategies. Exp 3 demonstrated that the differential response strategies were not stimulus specific. Analysis suggests that skilled performance can be conceptualized as an interaction between enhanced evidence accumulation and strategic setting of response criteria. The putative tumor suppressor gene on chromosome 5q for hepatocellular carcinoma is distinct from the MCC and APC genes

We have previously shown that the tumor suppressor gene for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) without cirrhosis may be located on chromosome 5q35-qter. In this study, we analyzed nine cases of primary HCC without cirrhosis using probes from the MCC and APC genes, which are in the region 5q21-22. None of the informative cases had allele loss detected by these probes, whereas the probe lambda MS8 for the region 5q35-qter showed allele loss in six out of six informative cases. The results confirm that the putative tumor suppressor gene for HCC without cirrhosis on chromosome 5q is distinct from the MCC and APC genes.     

The role of cysteine residues of spinach ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase As assessed by site-directed mutagenesis

To investigate the functional role of the cysteine residues present in the spinach ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase, we individually replaced each of the five cysteine residues with serine using site-directed mutagenesis. All of the mutant reductases were correctly assembled in Escherichia coli except for the C42S mutant protein. C114S and C137S mutant enzymes apparently showed structural and kinetic properties very similar to those of the wild-type reductase. However, C272S and C132S mutations yielded enzymes with a decreased catalytic activity in the ferredoxin-dependent reaction (14 and 31% of the wild type, respectively). Whereas the C132S was fully competent in the diaphorase reaction, the C272S mutant flavoprotein showed a 35-fold reduction in catalytic efficiency with respect to the wild-type enzyme (0.4 versus 14.28 microM-1 s-1) due to a substantial decrease of kcat. NADP+ binding by the C272S mutant enzyme was apparently quantitatively the same (Kd = 37 microM) but qualitatively different, as shown by the differential spectrum. Stopped-flow experiments showed that the enzyme-FAD reduction rate was considerably decreased in the C272S mutant reductase, along with a much lower yield of the charge-transfer transient species. It is inferred from these data that the charge transfer (FAD-NADPH) between the reductase and NADPH is required for hydride transfer from the pyridine nucleotide to flavin to occur with a rate compatible with catalysis.     

Highly purified omega-3-polyunsaturated fatty acids for topical treatment of psoriasis. Results of a double-blind, placebo-controlled multicentre study

We report the results of a multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of topical therapy with omega-3-polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3-PUFA) in 52 patients suffering from moderate plaque-type psoriasis. In each patient, two similar stable psoriatic plaques served as indicator lesions for the study. One indicator lesion was randomly assigned to treatment with topical preparations of highly purified omega-3-PUFA in one of two concentrations (1 or 10%), and the other was treated with placebo. Efficacy assessment was based on changes in local psoriasis severity index, area involved, erythema, desquamation, induration and pruritus. After 8 weeks of treatment, all indicator lesions had improved significantly, compared with baseline. However, no statistically or clinically relevant differences between the omega-3-PUFA-treated and the placebo-treated lesions were found. Therapy was well tolerated and, apart from one patient who developed perilesional eczema, no clinically relevant adverse events occurred. In conclusion, topical omega-3-PUFA were not effective in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind setting. Results of non-blind trials should be (re-)considered with caution.     

The bone marrow in murine AIDS

In order to increase the understanding of blood cytopenias in HIV infection we have investigated the bone marrow in murine AIDS. C57BL/6 mice infected with the LP-BM5 retrovirus show a decrease in cellularity, numerous haemophagocytic histiocytes, a reduction of all erythroid precursor cells, an increase in eosinophil number and an increase in lymphocytes. Immunostaining with an anti-Pr60gag antibody shows that the majority of bone marrow cells express the viral protein. Thus, the bone marrow in MAIDS has many similarities with the bone marrow from patients with advanced AIDS and may prove useful as a model for therapy aimed at treating blood cytopenias.
