The effect of the presentation rate and exposure duration of visually presented words on brain activity was investigated using positron emission tomography. Subjects either read aloud or silently mouthed the names of words. In regions associated with early visual analysis, activity increased with both rate and duration; in regions associated with response generation, activity increased with increasing rate but was unaffected by duration; and in regions associated with word recognition, activity decreased with increasing duration. The variable responses of different brain regions illustrate the functional segregation of these regions. Of particular interest was the dissociation between activity in the posterior fusiform gyri and that in the medial lingual gyrus--in the former, activity increased with rate and duration but the latter was unaffected by either variable. This finding suggests that word processing in the lingual gyrus during reading is distinct from that in the posterior fusiform gyri. A further observation was that during reading aloud, when subjects can hear the sound of their own voice, the response in the primary auditory cortices increased with stimulus rate, demonstrating that subjects process the sound of their own voice in a qualitatively similar way to words spoken by another. 相似文献

Polysaccharide fractions were measured in coconuts at three stages of maturity, which corresponded to dietary usage in the Tokelau Islands of the South Pacific. Kernel was sequentially extracted with cold water (CW), hot water (HW) hot 0.5% ammonium oxalate (HOX), 1M H2 SO4 and 72% H2 SO4, and the monosaccharide compositions of the fractions determined. Total readily soluble fractions (CW+HW+HOX) were predominantly galactomannan, and decreased from 77% of the polysaccharide in the immature kernel to 8.8% of that in the mature kernel. Insoluble mannan increased during maturation to be the major polysaccharide component in mature kernel. This indicates that marked differences exist between the three stages of maturity examined, in the properties of their dietary fibre. The results suggest that in studies of diets in which coconut is a staple part, there is a need for careful definition of the coconut component with respect to maturity. Furthermore, they show the importance of using dietary fibre methods which are appropriate to the solubility characteristics of the indigestible polysaccharide. 相似文献

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective comparative study of pain drawings with findings on lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging. OBJECTIVES: To assess the ability of the pain drawing to predict the presence of nerve root compression. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Most research work has concentrated on the ability of the pain drawing to act as a screening method for psychological distress with less work directed at the influence the anatomic abnormality has on the pain drawing. METHODS: One hundred thirty-four consecutive outpatients attending for lumbar magnetic resonance imaging in the investigation of back and leg pain completed pain drawings and psychological testing immediately before the examination. The pain drawing was analyzed by previously reported criteria, and the magnetic resonance imaging was assessed independently for the presence of nerve compression by three radiologists. Multivariate stepwise discriminant analysis was used to identify patients with nerve compression on the basis of their pain drawing. RESULTS: Nerve compression was predicted by numbness in the anterolateral aspect of the foot. There was considerable overlap in the appearances of the pain drawings between patients with and without nerve compression, and the pain drawing correctly classified only 58% of patients with nerve compression. CONCLUSIONS: The pain drawing is not a good predictor of nerve compression on magnetic resonance imaging in a group of patients investigated for back and leg pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate platelet effects on postischemic heart function in conjunction with adenosine effects on intracoronary platelet adhesion. Homologous platelets were infused into the coronaries of isolated guinea pig hearts, either during low-flow ischemia or during reperfusion, and external heart work (EHW) and intracoronary platelet adhesion were determined. In most experiments, thrombin was added to the perfusate. The influence of endogenous adenosine was studied by use of the uptake blocker dipyridamole and the unspecific adenosine-receptor blocker theophylline, the A1-receptor blocker 8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine (DPCPX), and the A2-receptor blocker 3,7-dimethyl-1-propargylxanthine (DMPX). The importance of nitric oxide and prostaglandin I2 (PGI2) was tested by using nitro-L-arginine (NOLAG) and indomethacin, respectively. When platelets were applied with thrombin during low-flow ischemia, EHW recovered to only 63 +/- 4% of the preischemic value, as compared with 89 +/- 3% without platelets (p < 0.05). Despite thrombin, platelets incurred no significant functional loss when applied in the first minute of reperfusion (but again in the fifth minute); however, when theophylline was also present, recovery of EHW amounted to only 42 +/- 12%. Intracoronary adhesion of platelets was negligible without thrombin, and highest during low-flow ischemia with thrombin (35 +/- 3% of the applied number). No adhesion occurred during the first minute of reperfusion, whereas in the fifth minute, adhesion was again 20.8 +/- 4%. Dipyridamole increased adenosine release and attenuated adhesion at this time. Theophylline increased adhesion in the first minute of reperfusion (33 +/- 6.4%), whereas NOLAG and indomethacin proved to be ineffective. DPCPX and DMPX each increased platelet retention during the first minute of reperfusion, their effects being additive. Intracoronary adhesion of platelets induced by thrombin in isolated hearts can reduce postischemic recovery of heart function. During reperfusion, but not during low-flow, endogenous adenosine can prevent platelet adhesion and loss of myocardial function, an action mediated both by A1- and A2-receptor-dependent mechanisms. 相似文献

The extensive heterogeneity of the gonadotrophin hormones, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), is due primarily to the heterogeneous nature of their carbohydrate side-chains, in particular sialic acid residues. In this review, we discuss the role of carbohydrate chains in receptor binding and activation, biological activity, and metabolic half-life. The synthesis and secretion of the various glycoforms of both FSH and LH appear to be under endocrine control with gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH), oestradiol and testosterone playing important roles. Evidence for different glycoforms having variable biopotency or different encoded functions is increasing, and the production and secretion of more or less acidic gonadotrophin species in different physiological states may represent an important mechanism whereby the pituitary regulates gonadal cell and organ function. This has potential importance for the development of new pharmaceutical reagents and new therapeutic regimens in assisted reproduction. It is envisaged that the use of existing and new forms of FSH/LH will allow patients to be treated in a more controlled and physiological manner, with treatment regimens individualized to the needs of the patient. 相似文献

This study with the rat evaluated the contribution of omega-conotoxin GVIA-(omega-CgTx) and verapamil-sensitive Ca2+ channels in behavioural, antinociceptive and thermoregulatory responses to intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of [D-Ala2,NMePhe4,Gly-ol5]enkephalin (DAMGO), [D-Pen2,D-Pen5]enkephalin (DPDPE) and dynorphin A-(1-17), which are selective agonists for putative mu, delta and kappa-opioid receptors, respectively. The rats treated with omega-CgTx (8-32 pmol i.c.v.) showed transient, dose-dependent shaking behaviour, hyperalgesia and hypothermia which gradually disappeared within 4 h. The behaviour of the rats was normal by 24 h. Histological examination of brain sections showed morphological alterations of neurons in the hippocampus, medial-basal hypothalamus and pyriform cortex. antinociception, catalepsy and thermoregulatory responses elicited by DAMGO (0.4 and 2.0 nmol) were significantly prolonged and potentiated by verapamil (20 pmol i.c.v. 15 min before) or omega-CgTx (8 pmol 24 h before). Antinociception and hypothermia induced by DPDPE were antagonized by verapamil and omega-CgTx, whereas only omega-CgTx prevented the behavioural arousal observed after DPDPE. Similarly, hypothermia induced by dynorphin A-(1-17) (5.0 nmol) and by the kappa-opioid receptor agonist U50,488H (215 nmol) was antagonized by the two Ca2+ channel blockers but only omega-CgTx prevented the barrel rolling and bizarre postures caused by the opioid peptide. 相似文献
