Investigation of the Equivalence of National Dew-Point Temperature Realizations in the ?50?°C to +?20?°C Range

In the field of humidity quantities, the first CIPM key comparison, CCT-K6 is at its end. The corresponding European regional key comparison, EUROMET.T-K6, was completed in early 2008, about 4?years after the starting initial measurements in the project. In total, 24 NMIs from different countries took part in the comparison. This number includes 22 EURAMET countries, and Russia and South Africa. The comparison covered the dew-point temperature range from ?50?°C to +20?°C. It was carried out in three parallel loops, each with two chilled mirror hygrometers as transfer standards in each loop. The comparison scheme was designed to ensure high quality results with evenly spread workload for the participants. It is shown that the standard uncertainty due to the long-term instability was smaller than 0.008?°C in all loops. The standard uncertainties due to links between the loops were found to be smaller than 0.025?°C at ?50?°C and 0.010?°C elsewhere. Conclusions on the equivalence of the dew-point temperature standards are drawn on the basis of calculated bilateral degrees of equivalence and deviations from the EURAMET comparison reference values (ERV). Taking into account 16 different primary dew-point realizations and 8 secondary realizations, the results demonstrate the equivalence of a large number of laboratories at an uncertainty level that is better than achieved in other multilateral comparisons so far in the humidity field.

Training echo state networks for rotation-invariant bone marrow cell classification

The main principle of diagnostic pathology is the reliable interpretation of individual cells in context of the tissue architecture. Especially a confident examination of bone marrow specimen is dependent on a valid classification of myeloid cells. In this work, we propose a novel rotation-invariant learning scheme for multi-class echo state networks (ESNs), which achieves very high performance in automated bone marrow cell classification. Based on representing static images as temporal sequence of rotations, we show how ESNs robustly recognize cells of arbitrary rotations by taking advantage of their short-term memory capacity. The performance of our approach is compared to a classification random forest that learns rotation-invariance in a conventional way by exhaustively training on multiple rotations of individual samples. The methods were evaluated on a human bone marrow image database consisting of granulopoietic and erythropoietic cells in different maturation stages. Our ESN approach to cell classification does not rely on segmentation of cells or manual feature extraction and can therefore directly be applied to image data.

This paper reports on some interesting experiments performed on a simulated model of a living cell. The basic model is that of Weinberg [35] and the underlying techniques employed are described by Zeigler and Weinberg [41]. The cell was subjected to step changes in its nutrient environment.

A socially aware caching mechanism for encounter networks

Managing community content in mobile communities is challenging, since informal groups may emerge spontaneously whenever opportunities exist. To deal with group dynamics, encounter based community support systems can be a solution. In encounter networks, peers exchange content whenever they physically meet, i.e., whenever peers are near to each other. To assure content availability within the community network, content needs to be replicated (cached) and continuously updated. A?well known drawback of this scheme is the fact that the resource usage can be quite high. In this paper we present new caching strategies based on sociological knowledge, aiming at improving the overall content quality. We derive mobility and connectivity aware cache policies and simulate their benefit for knowledge building with urban life simulations. Results show that context precision and recall can be greatly improved in comparison to traditional cache strategies applied in the majority of encounter networks.
