Cartilage thickness measurements from optical coherence tomography

We describe a new semiautomatic image processing method for detecting the cartilage boundaries in optical coherence tomography (OCT). In particular, we focus on rabbit cartilage since this is an important animal model for testing both chondroprotective agents and cartilage repair techniques. The novel boundary-detection system presented here consists of (1) an adaptive filtering technique for image enhancement and speckle reduction, (2) edge detection, and (3) edge linking by graph searching. The procedure requires several steps and can be automated. The quantitative measurements of cartilage thickness on OCT images correlated well with measurements from histology.     

MeshVision: an adaptive wireless mesh network video surveillance system

The major surveillance camera manufacturers have begun incorporating wireless networking functionality into their products to enable wireless access. However, the video feeds from such cameras can only be accessed within the transmission range of the cameras. These cameras must be connected to backbone infrastructure in order to access them from more than one hop away. This network infrastructure is both time-consuming and expensive to install, making it impractical in many rapid deployment situations (e.g., to provide temporary surveillance at a crime scene). To overcome this problem, we propose the MeshVision system that incorporates wireless mesh network functionality directly into the cameras. Video streams can be pulled from any camera within a network of MeshVision cameras, irrespective of how many hops away that camera is. To manage the trade-off between video stream quality and the number of video streams that could be concurrently accessed over the network, MeshVision uses a bandwidth adaptation mechanism. This mechanism monitors the wireless network looking for drops in link quality or signs of congestion and adjusts the quality of existing video streams in order to reduce that congestion. A significant benefit of the approach is that it is of low cost, requiring only a software upgrade of the cameras.

Determination of the Absolute Configuration of Chiral 1,3-Diols by CD spectroscopy of their [Mo2(OAc)4] complexes

Bidentate complexes between [Mo₂(OAc)₄] and 1,3-diols (1–16) show several CD bands in the 250–600 nm range. A previously published sector rule for the prediction of the sign of band II at ca. 400 nm for rigid cyclic 1,3-diols is extended to open-chain (7–12) as well as “semi-rigid” 1,3-glycols ( 1–6 and 14–16 ). Their absolute configuration can be correlated with the sign of this CD band. This in situ complexation needs minute amounts of substance and therefore is a very convenient tool for the determination of the absolute configuration of such class of compounds.
