The Mike 11-TRANS modelling system was applied to the lowland Gjern river basin in Denmark to assess climate-change impacts on hydrology and nitrogen retention processes in watercourses, lakes and riparian wetlands. Nutrient losses from land to surface waters were assessed using statistical models incorporating the effect of changed hydrology. Climate-change was predicted by the ECHAM4/OPYC General Circulation Model (IPCC A2 scenario) dynamically downscaled by the Danish HIRHAM regional climate model (25 km grid) for two time slices: 1961-1990 (control) and 2071-2100 (scenario). HIRHAM predicts an increase in mean annual precipitation of 47 mm (5%) and an increase in mean annual air temperature of 3.2 degrees C (43%). The HIRHAM predictions were used as external forcings to the rainfall-runoff model NAM, which was set up and run for 6 subcatchments within and for the entire, Gjern river basin. Mean annual runoff from the river basin increases 27 mm (7.5%, p<0.05) when comparing the scenario to the control. Larger changes, however, were found regarding the extremes; runoff during the wettest year in the 30-year period increased by 58 mm (12.3%). The seasonal pattern is expected to change with significantly higher runoff during winter. Summer runoff is expected to increase in predominantly groundwater fed streams and decrease in streams with a low base-flow index. The modelled change in the seasonal hydrological pattern is most pronounced in first- or second-order streams draining loamy catchments, which currently have a low base-flow during the summer period. Reductions of 40-70% in summer runoff are predicted for this stream type. A statistical nutrient loss model was developed for simulating the impact of changed hydrology on diffuse nutrient losses (i.e. losses from land to surface waters) and applied to the river basin. The simulated mean annual changes in TN loads in a loamy and a sandy subcatchment were, respectively, +2.3 kg N ha(-1) (8.5%) and +1.6 kg N ha(-1) (6.9%). The rainfall-runoff model and the nutrient loss model were chained with Mike 11-TRANS to simulate the combined effects of climate-change on hydrology, nutrient losses and nitrogen retention processes at the scale of the river basin. The mean annual TN export from the river basin increased from the control to the scenario period by 7.7%. Even though an increase in nitrogen retention in the river system of 4.2% was simulated in the scenario period, an increased in-stream TN export resulted because of the simulated increase in the diffuse TN transfer from the land to the surface-waters.  相似文献

EEG complexity as a measure of depth of anesthesia for patients   总被引:22,自引:0,他引:22  
A new approach for quantifying the relationship between brain activity patterns and depth of anesthesia (DOA) is presented by analyzing the spatio-temporal patterns in the electroencephalogram (EEG) using Lempel-Ziv complexity analysis. Twenty-seven patients undergoing vascular surgery were studied under general anesthesia with sevoflurane, isoflurane, propofol, or desflurane. The EEG was recorded continuously during the procedure and patients' anesthesia states were assessed according to the responsiveness component of the observer's assessment of alertness/sedation (OAA/S) score. An OAA/S score of zero or one was considered asleep and two or greater was considered awake. Complexity of the EEG was quantitatively estimated by the measure C(n), whose performance in discriminating awake and asleep states was analyzed by statistics for different anesthetic techniques and different patient populations. Compared with other measures, such as approximate entropy, spectral entropy, and median frequency, C(n) not only demonstrates better performance (93% accuracy) across all of the patients, but also is an easier algorithm to implement for real-time use. The study shows that C(n) is a very useful and promising EEG-derived parameter for characterizing the (DOA) under clinical situations.  相似文献

This study examined risk factors associated with incisor injury in 3396 third and fourth grade school children in Alachua County, Florida. One of six orthodontists completed a standardized examination form for each child to assess severity of incisor injury, gender, age, race, skeletal relationships, morphologic malocclusion, incisor exposure, interlabial gap, TMJ sounds, chin trauma, and history of lower facial trauma. One in five (19.2%) exhibited some degree of incisor injury. This was limited to a single tooth in 73.1% of those with injury, while enamel injury predominated (89.4%). The majority of the injuries (75.4%) were localized in the maxillary arch, with central incisors the most frequently traumatized. Chi-square tests of association indicated that gender, race, school, orthodontist, history of lower facial trauma, chin trauma, profile, and maxillary and mandibular horizontal positions were associated with incisor injury (P < 0.05). Wilcoxon rank sum tests identified differences in age, overjet, time of screening, and interlabial gap between those with and without injury (P < 0.05). Results of logistic regression analyses indicated risk of incisor injury was greater for children who had a prognathic maxilla, a history of trauma, were older, were male, and had greater overjet and mandibular anterior spacing.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to examine associations between persistent organic pollutants and vitamin A (retinol), retinyl palmitate and vitamin E status (alpha-tocopherol) in two species occupying different trophic positions in the Arctic food web. Levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), some selected organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) were analyzed in yolk sac of newly hatched chicks of Brünnich's guillemot (Uria lomvia) and common eider (Somateria mollissima) from Kongsfjorden, Svalbard (Norwegian Arctic) (79 degrees N). Morphological variables were measured, and levels of retinol, retinyl palmitate and alpha-tocopherol were analyzed in plasma and liver. Brünnich's guillemot had significantly higher levels of POPs than common eider, as expected from its higher trophic position. Morphological traits seemed to be negatively related to POPs in Brünnich's guillemots, but not in common eiders. In Brünnich's guillemot, negative relationships were found between some OCPs (hexachlorobenzene, oxychlordane, p,p'-DDE) and liver alpha-tocopherol levels. The negative relationships between these OCPs and liver alpha-tocopherol levels in Brünnich's guillemot hatchlings became less evident when the confounding effect of liver mass was corrected for. In common eider positive relationships were found between summed PCB (SigmaPCBs) and some OCPs (beta-hexachlorocyclohexane, oxychlordane) and liver alpha-tocopherol levels. Differences in relationships between POPs and vitamin status in the two species may be related to differences in POP exposure levels linked to their trophic position in the Arctic marine food web, or to intrinsic physiological differences between the species.  相似文献

This paper reports further progress in understanding the theory of emission-area extraction from Fowler-Nordheim plots, and reports some useful interim results derived by modelling field electron emission from hemi-ellipsoidal emitters. The mathematical nature of the relationship between a new approach to emission-area extraction, recently proposed, and older approaches is demonstrated. The new approach is extended to cover field dependence in emission area. Preliminary results are reported from an investigation into the effects of making erroneous assumptions about the tunnelling barrier seen by the electron and the absence of field dependence in emission area. If wrong theoretical assumptions are made, then emission area can be overpredicted by a factor of as much as 10 or 20. On the other hand, if correct theoretical assumptions are made, then the extracted emission area is close to an emission area derived directly from the model calculations. The problematical nature of the concept of emission area, when emission area is a function of field, is pointed out.  相似文献

Most reported familial cases of agenesis of the corpus callosum have followed either an autosomal recessive or an X-linked recessive pattern of inheritance. To the best of our knowledge, there is only one previous report of a family showing clear-cut autosomal dominant inheritance. We present the second such family, among whom a mother and her son had moderately severe coordination problems and low-normal intelligence. We suggest that agenesis of the corpus callosum, when transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait, is clinically characterized by a relatively milder phenotype than that occurring when inheritance is either autosomal or X-linked recessive and may be more common than has been thought.  相似文献

A variety of dosing schedules have been reported for the hyperventilation method of broncho-provocation testing. To evaluate the effect of challenge technique on the bronchoconstrictive response, we had 16 subjects perform eucapnic voluntary hyperventilation (EVH) with dry, room temperature gas using four different dosing schedules. The hyperventilation challenge dosages included the following: (1) a target minute ventilation (VE) of 20 x FEV1 for 6 min; (2) a target VE of 15 x FEV1 for 12 min; (3) an interrupted challenge with a target VE of 30 x FEV1 for 2 min repeated 3 times; and (4) a target VE of 30 x FEV1 for 6 min. Challenges 2, 3, and 4 gave identical absolute ventilatory challenges (identical factor FEV1 x minutes) but at different VE dosages or time. Challenges 1 and 4 were of identical length, but different target VE. The mean postchallenge fall in FEV1 was 16.6 +/- 10.9%, 11.0 +/- 8.1%, 19.6 +/- 9.9%, and 26.7 +/- 11.3% for challenges 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively. The response to an identical EVH challenge (FEV1 x 30 for 6 min) was reproducible when performed on separate days. We conclude that the challenge technique used for hyperventilation testing will have a significant impact on the bronchoconstrictive response and must be taken into account when interpreting study results. Tests may be quantitatively comparable over a narrow range of challenge time and VE. We recommend that a 6-min uninterrupted EVH challenge using dry, room temperature gas at a target VE of 30 x FEV1 be adopted as the "standard" challenge.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to identify predictors of torsades de pointes (TdP) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) or flutter exposed to the Class III antiarrhythmic drug almokalant. TdP can be caused by drugs that prolong myocardial repolarization. One hundred patients received almokalant infusion during AF (infusion 1) and 62 of the patients during sinus rhythm (SR) on the following day (infusion 2). Thirty-two patients converted to SR. Six patients developed TdP. During AF, T wave alternans was more common prior to infusion (baseline) in patients developing TdP (50% vs 4%, P < 0.01). After 30 minutes of infusion 1, the TdP patients exhibited a longer QT interval (493 +/- 114 vs 443 +/- 54 ms [mean +/- SD], P < 0.01), a larger precordial QT dispersion (50 +/- 74 vs 27 +/- 26 ms, P < 0.05), and a lower T wave amplitude (0.12 +/- 0.21 vs 0.24 +/- 0.16 mV, P < 0.01). After 30 minutes of infusion 2, they exhibited a longer QT interval (672 +/- 26 vs 489 +/- 74 ms, P < 0.001), a larger QT dispersion in precordial (82 +/- 7 vs 54 +/- 52 ms, P < 0.01) and extremity leads (163 +/- 0 vs 40 +/- 34 ms, P < 0.001), and T wave alternans was more common (100% vs 0%, P < 0.001). Risk factors for development of TdP were at baseline: female gender, ventricular extrasystoles, and treatment with diuretics; and, after 30 minutes of infusion: sequential bilateral bundle branch block, ventricular extrasystoles in bigeminy, and a biphasic T wave. Patients developing TdP exhibited early during almokalant infusion a pronounced QT prolongation, increased QT dispersion, and marked morphological T wave changes.  相似文献
