This case study presents a method of utilizing computer-aided design technologies to provide bespoke, external breast prostheses. The technique is illustrated through a case study of a mastectomy patient. Photogrammetry methods were used to capture the breast form when supported by a brassiere and the unsupported breast and defect side. Computer-aided design techniques were used to generate a digital prosthesis based upon the supported breast shape and with a fitting surface that matched the defect side. Furthermore, a two-part mould was designed and fabricated using rapid prototyping methods. A colour-matched prosthesis was then fabricated in a gel-based, platinum-cured silicone. 相似文献

SimpleTreat 3.1 predicts the distribution and elimination of chemicals by sewage treatment. The model is used as the default calculation in EUSES 2.0 to estimate exposure concentration in the receiving water, soil and air. A sensitivity analysis was performed to rank input parameters according to their influence on model predictions. Triclosan was selected for the base case. The sewage flow, degradation rates and parameters describing the raw sewage were shown to be the most sensitive inputs. The pH and dissociation constant are very sensitive parameters when working with ionisable compounds. Variation in certain input parameters was propagated through the model to yield greater variation in output parameters with a maximum ratio of 4.0. SimpleTreat 3.1 is a steady state model describing a highly non-steady system. A large variability in the most sensitive parameters is expected within a single sewage plant and parameters should therefore be selected to cover this variability. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: This paper considers the influence of "Humans and Automation: Use, Misuse, Disuse, Abuse" and examines how it relates to the evolving issue of human-automation interaction. BACKGROUND: Automation presents important practical challenges that can dramatically affect satisfaction, performance, and safety; philosophical challenges also arise as automation changes the nature of work and human cognition. METHOD: Papers cited by and citing "Humans and Automation" were reviewed to identify enduring and emerging themes in human-automation research. RESULTS: "Humans and Automation" emerges as an important node in the network of automation-related papers, citing many and being cited by many recent influential automation-related papers. In their article, Parasuraman and Riley (1997) integrated previous research and identified differing expectations across designers, managers, and operators regarding the need to support operators as a source of automation problems. They also foresaw and inspired research that addresses problems of overreliance and underreliance on automation. CONCLUSION: This pivotal article and associated research show that even though automation seems to relieve people of tasks, automation requires more, not less, attention to training, interface design, and interaction design. The original article also alludes to the emergence of vicious cycles and dysfunctional meta-control. These problems reflect the coevolution of automation and humans, in which both adapt to the responses of the other. APPLICATION: Understanding this coevolution has important philosophical implications for the nature of human cognition and practical implications for satisfaction, performance, and safety. 相似文献

Although the impacts of wetland loss are often felt at regional scales, effective planning and management require a comparative assessment of local needs, costs, and benefits. Satellite remote sensing can provide spatially explicit, synoptic land cover change information to support such an assessment. However, a common challenge in conventional remote sensing change detection is the difficulty of obtaining phenologically and radiometrically comparable data from the start and end of the time period of interest. An alternative approach is to use a prior land cover classification as a surrogate for historic satellite data and to examine the self-consistency of class spectral reflectances in recent imagery. We produced a 30-meter resolution wetland change probability map for the U.S. mid-Atlantic region by applying an outlier detection technique to a base classification provided by the National Wetlands Inventory (NWI). Outlier-resistant measures – the median and median absolute deviation – were used to represent spectral reflectance characteristics of wetland class populations, and formed the basis for the calculation of a pixel change likelihood index. The individual scene index values were merged into a consistent region-wide map and converted to pixel change probability using a logistic regression calibrated through interpretation of historic and recent aerial photography. The accuracy of a regional change/no-change map produced from the change probabilities was estimated at 89.6%, with a Kappa of 0.779. The change probabilities identify areas for closer inspection of change cause, impact, and mitigation potential. With additional work to resolve confusion resulting from natural spatial heterogeneity and variations in land use, automated updating of NWI maps and estimates of areal rates of wetland change may be possible. In this paper, a new matching pursuits dissimilarity measure (MPDM) is presented that compares two signals using the information provided by their matching pursuits (MP) approximations, without requiring any prior domain knowledge. MPDM is a flexible and differentiable measure that can be used to perform shape-based comparisons and fuzzy clustering of very high-dimensional, possibly compressed, data. A novel prototype based classification algorithm, which is termed the computer aided minimization procedure (CAMP), is also proposed. The CAMP algorithm uses the MPDM with the competitive agglomeration (CA) fuzzy clustering algorithm to build reliable shape based prototypes for classification. MP is a well known sparse signal approximation technique, which is commonly used for video and image coding. The dictionary and coefficient information produced by MP has previously been used to define features to build discrimination and prototype based classifiers. However, existing MP based classification applications are quite problem domain specific, thus making their generalization to other problems quite difficult. The proposed CAMP algorithm is the first MP based classification system that requires no assumptions about the problem domain and builds a bridge between the MP and fuzzy clustering algorithms. Experimental results also show that the CAMP algorithm is more resilient to outliers in test data than the multilayer perceptron (MLP) and support-vector-machine (SVM) classifiers, as well as prototype-based classifiers using the Euclidean distance as their dissimilarity measure. 相似文献

In this article, we discuss experiences and lessons learned from deploying four mobile sensing applications on off-the-shelf mobile phones within a recreational framework called MobSens that contains elements of health, social, and environmental sensing at both individual and community levels. We describe the main components of our applications, which facilitate logging and external communications. The rehabilitation of the range of individuals covering medical patients to elite athletes is a costly and time-consuming process involving the knowledge of experienced physical therapists, medical practitioners, coaches, and dedicated training facilities. In order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the rehabilitation process, a modular variable-resistance rehabilitation device has been developed. The mechanical, electromechanical, and software systems identified during this research have been shown to provide a step change in exercise functionality, real-time patient monitoring, performance feedback, and safety. Using distributed network concepts, the physical therapist will be able to design and implement training regimes remotely, which can subsequently be downloaded to the localized resistance devices. The patient and/or athlete is able to complete the required exercises without personal supervision. The data from these sessions can be saved and accessed for assessment at a convenient time, thereby maximizing therapist productivity and optimizing the utilization of medical resources. 相似文献

This study is a historical reconstruction and in-depth scrutiny of one very successful team initiative within a Quality Improvement (QI) program in a municipal government organization. The identification of the essential concepts that contributed to the team's success and their integration into a local explanatory theory of team achievement is the final purpose of the study. The focus of this retrospective study is on the team process, with primary attention given to team members’ perspectives and reflections on the project development. Data collection and analysis were conducted with methods drawn from the qualitative research tradition and from Quality Management.
Main findings point to the importance of consistent management support, correct team composition with an emphasis on the team leader choice and demeanor, and to the central role of training in the group conduct. The negotiated approach to decision-making employed by the team, which reflected its organizational context, and the effort and mechanisms that allowed the group to reach equilibrium between internal and external interests proved critical for its ultimate achievement. 相似文献
