A study on the anodic protection of Titanium evaporators in Al2(SO4)3 solution

The feasibility of the anodic protection of titanium evaporators in Al₂(SO₄)₃ solution was studied by the measurement of polarization curves, weight loss, solubility of passive film and AC impedance. The protection parameters and efficiency were determined. In addition, the practical technology of anodic protection was studied by screening reference electrodes and auxiliary cathodes. Throwing power was also measured. Four rows of tube-type evaporators of titanium have been anodically protected in situ. Field tests lasting more than one year show satisfactory results.     

H∞ control versus disturbance-observer-basedcontrol

In the motion control field, a disturbance observer-based disturbance canceling control is often used as a robust control methodology. However, this method is nothing more than an alternative design of an integral controller, and the robust stability issue cannot be directly accounted for. In this paper, an extended H_∞ control scheme is proposed as a new robust motion control method which achieves the disturbance cancellation ability and guarantees robust stability automatically     

Very-high-speed fibre-optic networks for broadband communications

Single-mode optical fibres have an enormous transmission bandwidth which can support ultra-high-speed digital transmission and networking. The use of electrical signal-processing, however, ultimately limits the network capacity. To eliminate the throughput bottleneck, all-optical processing techniques should be employed in a fibre-optic network. This paper discusses several schemes for implementing optical time division multiple access (OTDMA) networks with the emphasis on optical clock distribution, synchronisation and all-optical detection. The use of a fast-switching bistable laser diode as an all-optical threshold detector and data regenerator is suggested. A dual-wavelength OTDMA technique is investigated, which can be used for digital TV or future HDTV distributions. Moreover, an efficient multiple access scheme, called wavelength division multiple access with optical time division multiplexing (WDMA-OTDM), is proposed for broadband communication services. It is shown that WDMA-OTDM has all the advantages possessed by the individual OTDMA and WDMA schemes but offers improved flexibility and capacity     

The Effect of Initial Inventories in a Two-Echelon System

A model in which jointly optimal stocks of material and finished products are to be chosen is reexamined. While it costs less to hold material, a certain percentage of the random demand not immediately satisfied by previously finished products is lost. We pay particular attention to the dependence of the optimal stocks on the initial ones, which assumes an interesting form. For example, if the stock of finished products is high but the combined stock is low, die quantity of material ordered depends on the stock of finished products.

Fine-line conductor manufacturing using drop-on demand PZT printingtechnology

An emerging selective metallization process to fabricate fine-line conductors based on drop-on-demand (DOD) ink jet printing and novel nano-particle fluid suspensions (NPFS) was studied. The suspensions consist of 1-10 nm silver or gold particulates that are homogeneously suspended in an organic carrier. A piezo-electric droplet generator driven by a bipolar voltage signal is used to dispense 50-70 μm diameter droplets traveling at 1-3 m/s before impacting a compliant polyimide substrate. The deposit/substrate composite is subsequently processed at 300°C for 15 min to allow for complete evaporation of the carrier and for sintering of the nano-particles, thereby yielding a finished circuit interconnect. Test vehicles created using this technique exhibit features as fine as 120 μm wide and 1 μm thick with resistivities on the order of 3.5×10^-5 Ωcm. The circuitry performed well under environmental conditioning. As expected, repeatability of circuitry fabrication showed sensitivity to the generation of steady, satellite-free droplets. In an effort to generate droplets consistently, it is essential to develop a strong fundamental understanding of the correlation between device excitation parameters and dispensed fluid properties, and to resolve the microrheological behavior of the NPFS when flowing through the droplet generator     

Access-mode predictions for low-power cache design

An access-mode prediction technique based on cache hit and miss speculation for cache design-achieves minimal energy consumption. Using this method, cache accesses can be adaptively switched between the way-prediction and the phased accessing modes.

Calculation of the partial capacitance in a system of conductorswithin the calculable resistor

A method for calculating the partial capacitance (PC) in a multiconductor system (a system of conductors) consisting of n conductors parallel to the shield axis inside earthed cylindrical shields is discussed. Formulas for the PC in SI units are given. The PC is defined as the conductor-to-conductor capacitance and conductor-to-shield capacitance. These methods and formulas are suitable for calculating the PC of Gibbings' resistors with a calculable ac/dc resistance ratio
