Lateral loads are often the primary forces that act on drilled shafts when they support retaining walls, bridge piers, or building foundations. The construction of drilled shafts often inadvertently introduces flaws that are not always detectable with well-performed nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques. The effect of such undetectable minor flaws on the lateral-load performance of drilled shafts needs to be assessed and subsequently considered in the design. This paper summarizes a field study that consisted of NDE of six, full-scale drilled shafts with preinstalled voids and lateral-load tests that were performed on the six test shafts. Results from the field study indicated that undetectable (by NDE) void flaws occupying areas of up to 15% of the cross-sectional area of the drilled shaft could reduce free-head shear capacity up to 16%. A subsequent numerical analysis was performed to filter out all variables, other than void flaws, that could affect the lateral-load deformation of drilled shafts. Numerical analysis results validated the field tests measurements. A parametric study of variables affecting the load-deformation behavior of drilled shafts suggests that a reduction in moment capacity of up to 27% is possible with undetected voids present in the shafts that were tested.  相似文献

This paper reports on the third phase of a multiphase study undertaken at the American University of Beirut (AUB) to examine the effect of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets in confining tension lap splice regions in reinforced concrete beams. Results of the first two phases showed that glass and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP and CFRP) sheets were effective in increasing the bond strength and improving the ductility of the mode of failure of tension lap splices in high-strength concrete (HSC) beams with nominal concrete strength of 70 MPa. The experimental results of the two phases were used to propose a new FRP confinement parameter, Ktr,f, that accounts for the bond strength contribution of FRP sheets wrapping tension lap splice regions in HSC beams. In this third phase of the AUB study, the trend of the results of phases 1 and 2 and the validity of the analytical model proposed were verified if normal-strength concrete (NSC) is used instead of HSC. Seven beams with nominal concrete strength of 27.58 MPa (4 ksi) were tested in positive bending. Each beam was designed with a tension lap splice in a constant moment region in the midspan of the beam. The main test variables were the configuration (1 strip, 2 strips, or a continuous strip) and the number of layers (1 layer or 2 layers) of the CFRP sheets wrapping the splice region. The test results demonstrated that CFRP sheets were effective in enhancing the bond strength and ductility of failure mode of tension lap splices in NSC in a very similar way to HSC. In addition, the FRP confinement index proposed earlier for HSC was proven to be valid in the case of NSC.  相似文献

The spectrophotometric assay of 2,4-dienoyl coenzyme A (CoA) reductase (EC 1.1.1.34) was modified to improve the linearity and sensitivity of this method. 5-Phenyl-2,4-pentadienoyl-CoA, which has an absorbance maximum at 340 nm with an extinction coefficient of 44,300 M−1 cm−1, was synthesized and used as substrate. This compound is reduced by nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH)-dependent 2,4-dienoyl-CoA reductase to 5-phenyl-3-pentenoyl-CoA. When a tissue homogenate serves as an enzyme source, the product is further metabolized by Δ3Δ2-enoyl-CoA isomerase (EC 5.3.3.8) to 5-phenyl-2-pentenoyl-CoA, which is hydrated to 5-phenyl-3-hydroxypentanoyl-CoA by enoyl-CoA hydratase (EC 4.2.1.17). The modified assay method, which measures the decrease in absorbance at 340 nm due to the reduction of 5-phenyl-2,4-pentadienoyl-CoA and the oxidation of NADPH, is linear for a longer period of time and is twice as sensitive as the conventional assay with 2,4-decadienoyl-CoA as substrate.  相似文献

This study explores the influence of olive waste ash (OWA) on the performance of concrete exposed to elevated temperatures in the range from 400 to 600 °C. The performance of concrete to elevated temperature was evaluated using compressive strength and electrical charge of concrete. Three OWA levels were used in the study: 7%, 15%, and 22% by weight of cement. The other experimental parameters investigated in the study were elevated temperature (400 and 600 °C), aggregate type (crushed basalt and volcanic tuff), w/c ratio (0.5 and 0.7), and air content (non-air and air entrained). After the initial moist curing period of 90 days, concrete specimens were exposed to elevated temperatures for a period of 2 h using an electric furnace.  相似文献

Abstract:  Accurate short-term prediction of travel speed as a proxy for time is central to many Intelligent Transportation Systems, especially for Advanced Traveler Information Systems and Advanced Traffic Management Systems. In this study, we propose an innovative methodology for such prediction. Because of the inherently direct derivation of travel time from speed data, the study was limited to the use of speed only as a single predictor. The proposed method is a hybrid one that combines the use of the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and a multilayer feedforward neural network with backpropagation. The EMD is the key part of the Hilbert–Huang transform, which is a newly developed method at NASA for the analysis of nonstationary, nonlinear time series. The rationale for using the EMD is that because of the highly nonlinear and nonstationary nature of link speed series, by decomposing the time series into its basic components, more accurate forecasts would be obtained. We demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method by applying it to real-life loop detector data obtained from I-66 in Fairfax, Virginia. The prediction performance of the proposed method was found to be superior to previous forecasting techniques. Rigorous testing of the distribution of prediction errors revealed that the model produced unbiased predictions of speeds. The superiority of the proposed model was also verified during peak periods, midday, and night. In general, the method was accurate, computationally efficient, easy to implement in a field environment, and applicable to forecasting other traffic parameters.  相似文献

Nowadays, mobile video streaming services are possible. Mobile users expect to receive multimedia traffic with some performance guarantees, so we must ensure the necessary quality of service during the video transmission. This paper aims at investigating quality of service issue inUmts network. More specifically, we explore the main challenge of quality of service management to dynamically optimize the distribution of load inUmts networks. Our investigation is organized in the following way. We formalize the optimization problem which is based on the graph theory and modellingUmts network as well as mobile users and applications to be used. The simulation of our optimization model show a clear improvement of the quality of service perceived by anUmts user in terms of bit rate, blocking and connection drop.  相似文献

Network traffic data collected for intrusion analysis is typically high-dimensional making it difficult to both analyze and visualize. Principal Component Analysis is used to reduce the dimensionality of the feature vectors extracted from the data to enable simpler analysis and visualization of the traffic. Principal Component Analysis is applied to selected network attacks from theDarpa 1998 intrusion detection data sets namely: Denial-of-Service and Network Probe attacks. A method for identifying an attack based on the generated statistics is proposed. Infant milk formula has been identified as a potential source of Enterobacter sakazakii, which has been implicated in neonatal meningitis and necrotizing enterocolitis. This study was undertaken to determine whether the length of E. sakazakii storage in powdered infant milk formula (PIMF) affected the ability of the pathogen to survive subsequent reconstitution of the powder with hot water or treatment with gamma radiation. Five E. sakazakii strains were mixed individually with PIMF and kept for up to 12 months at 25 degrees C. After storage PIMF was reconstituted with water at 60 to 100 degrees C or was exposed to < or = 5 kGy of gamma radiation. Without any treatment secondary to drying, E. sakazakii counts decreased < 1 log/g after 1 month but decreased about 4 log/g during storage for 8 to 12 months. Dry storage decreased thermal resistance but increased resistance of E. sakazakii to ionizing radiation in PIMF. Reconstitution of contaminated powder with water at 70 degrees C after 1 month of dry storage reduced E. sakazakii viability slightly, > 2 log/g, and after powder was stored for 12 months all E. sakazakii strains were eliminated. In contrast, desiccation substantially increased the resistance of E. sakazakii strains to ionizing radiation. Although the D-value for E. sakazakii IMF1 following overnight storage in PIMF was 0.98 kGy, > 4 kGy was required to kill 1.5 log/g of the same strain that had survived 12 months in dry PIMF. Results suggested that low-dose irradiation will more effectively eliminate E. sakazakii from PIMF if the treatment is applied shortly after PIMF manufacture.  相似文献

Nanoparticle vermiculite (VMT) clay was prepared by treatment with hydrochloric acid. Styrene‐butadiene rubber (SBR) nanocomposites were prepared by mixing different contents (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 phr) of untreated (VMT) and acid‐treated (DVMT) vermiculite clay, respectively. In addition, different contents (3, 7, and 10 phr) of maleic anhydride (MA) as compatibilizer were mixed via direct melt compounding in internal mixer. The effect of gamma irradiation, VMT clay, and MA contents on the mechanical properties was studied. The acid‐treated VMT clay was characterized by x‐ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy. Meanwhile, the SBR/VMT composites, SBR/DVMT, and SBR/DVMT/MA nanocomposites were characterized via crosslinking density and tensile mechanical testing and FT‐IR spectroscopic analysis. The results indicated that good yield of nanoparticle vermiculite was achieved when the acid treatment was carried out for 120 h. In addition, the results showed that the presence of DVMT clay improved the chemical bonding in the SBR nanocomposites and hence their mechanical properties. The highest improvement was obtained when the contents of DVMT clay, MA, and irradiation dose were 10 phr, 3 phr, and 100 kGy, respectively. POLYM. ENG.
