As part of an effort to characterize the uncertainties associated with temperature measurements in fire environments, models of bare bead, single-shielded aspirated, and double-shielded aspirated thermocouples were developed and used to study the effects of varying the gas and average effective surroundings temperatures on the thermocouple error of each configuration. The models were developed for steady-state conditions and hence provide information about error trends rather than about absolute error values. The models indicate that thermocouples respond differently to changes in effective surroundings temperature in a hot upper-layer than in a relatively cooler lower layer of a room fire. In an upper-layer, for a given gas temperature, the thermocouple error is relatively insensitive to surroundings temperature. In a lower layer, errors which increase rapidly with surroundings temperature are possible. The most extreme errors occur in a lower layer when the gas temperature is low and the surroundings temperature is high. Aspirated thermocouples reduce the errors in both the upper and lower layers of a room fire, but do not eliminate them entirely. The present study is intended to provide fire researchers with a methodology for developing working models of thermocouples which are tailored to their own configurations.  相似文献

Ozone is a highly reactive gas with insecticidal activity. Past studies have indicated that ozone technology has potential as a management tool to control insect pests in bulk grain storage facilities. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of short periods of exposure to high ozone concentrations to kill all life stages of red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum (Herbst)) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), and Indianmeal moth (Plodia interpunctella (Hübner)) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), adult maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch.)) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and adult rice weevil (S. oryzae (L)) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Insects were treated with six ozone concentrations between 50 and 1800 ppm. The specific objective was to determine minimal time needed to attain 100% mortality. The most ozone-tolerant stages of T. castaneum were pupae and eggs, which required a treatment of 180 min at 1800 ppm ozone to reach 100% mortality. Eggs of P. interpunctella also required 180 min at 1800 ppm ozone to reach 100% mortality. Ozone treatments of 1800 ppm for 120 min and 1800 ppm for 60 min were required to kill all adult S. zeamais and adult S. oryzae, respectively. The results indicate that high ozone concentrations reduce the treatment times significantly over previously described results. Our results also provide new baseline information about insect tolerance to ozone treatment.  相似文献

The construction of buildings has a very important impact on the environment, and the process of manufacturing and transporting of building materials, and installing and constructing of buildings consumes great energy and emits large quantity of greenhouse gas (GHG). The present paper defines four sources of GHG emissions in building construction, which are: manufacture and transportation of building materials; energy consumption of construction equipment; energy consumption for processing resources; and disposal of construction waste, and then establishes the calculation method of GHG emissions. This paper presents a case study of GHG emissions in building construction in Hong Kong. The results show that 82–87% of the total GHG emissions are from the embodied GHG emissions of building materials, 6–8% are from the transportation of building materials, and 6–9% are due to the energy consumption of construction equipment. The results also indicate that embodied GHG emissions of concrete and reinforced steel account for 94–95% of those of all building materials, and thus the use of recycled building materials, especially reinforced steel, would decrease the GHG emissions by a considerable amount.  相似文献

Objective

To compare the differences in Canadian national estimates of correct child restraint use obtained using the standard roadside observation method compared to a detailed parking lot interview.

Design

A multi-stage stratified survey design was used to conduct roadside observational and interview data collection at 182 randomly selected sites across Canada. For each site, a roadside intersection location and a parking lot location were used for the roadside observational survey and the interview respectively. Weighted estimates of correct restraint use from both locations were compared.

Results

Estimates of correct restraint use were significantly higher for all children under the age of 9 in the parking lot sample. The largest discrepancy between the two samples was in booster seat aged children (ages 4–8) where 29.1% versus 67.8% of children were observed to be correctly restrained using the roadside and the parking lot methodology respectively. There was a 67% participation refusal rate in the parking lot survey.

Conclusions

There are specific advantages and limitations to both survey designs. The purpose of the data collection must be considered when selecting the methodology. Parking lot surveys provide richer data regarding restraint use/misuse. Estimates of correct restraint use must be approached with caution due to the effect of consent bias resulting in over inflation of estimates. Roadside observation is adequate and appropriate for providing national estimates of correct restraint use.  相似文献

Within the Tl2O-Ag2O-TeO2 system, a large glass-forming domain was evidenced and is presented for the fist time. Densities, glass transition (Tg) and crystallization (Tc) temperatures of the relevant glasses were measured. A structural approach of these glasses as functions of the composition was performed using Raman scattering. The Raman spectra were analysed in terms of the structural modifications induced by the Tl2O and Ag2O modifiers. It has clearly evidenced a phase separation inherent in tellurite glasses with low valence cations (as Tl+ and Ag+). The glasses would be constituted of two phases only: one of pure TeO2 and one of pure ortho-tellurite M2TeO3 (M = Ag, Tl) with the statistically mixed Ag-Tl cationic composition.  相似文献

The trophic roles of key Ponto-Caspian invaders (quagga mussels Dreissena bugensis, amphipods Echinogammarus ischnus and round goby Apollonia melanostomus) within the littoral food web of eastern Lake Erie were quantified using stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N). A dual stable isotope parameter search with a mass balance component was used to assess the isotopic importance of quagga mussels and amphipods as dietary items to two size classes of round goby. The utility of the mass balance simulation was also evaluated as a tool to approximate isotopic contributions of feasible prey and identify gaps incurred by “missing” prey items not included in the sampling. The mass balance dietary simulation, confirmed by stomach content data, indicated that isotopically important prey to small round goby (< 11.2 cm) were chironomids and Ponto-Caspian amphipods, while large round goby (≥ 11.2 cm) showed strong preference for quagga mussels. The dietary mass balance simulation output also supported the isotopic importance of round goby to the somatic growth of smallmouth bass, rock bass and freshwater drum. The isotopic mass balance output for yellow perch was more ambiguous, which may be in line with their known broadly omnivorous diet. The white bass output was in line with published data indicating increasing consumption of round goby for this species, while the brown trout output strongly favoured alewife isotopic contributions. However for white perch and walleye, the mass balance simulations were not in line with their known published diets in Lake Erie, probably due to a lack of key prey items in the sample set (e.g. zooplankton for white perch and shiner species for walleye). As expected, the Ponto-Caspian species have integrated themselves into the littoral food webs, and the “quagga mussel–round goby–smallmouth bass” food chain forms one of the key components within the trophodynamics of Lake Erie.  相似文献

Systemic sclerosis (SSc; scleroderma) is a chronic fibrotic disease involving TGF-β1. Low serum vitamin D (vit D) correlates with the degree of fibrosis and expression of TGF-β1. This study was designed to determine whether the noncalcemic vit D analog, 17,20S(OH)2pD, suppresses fibrosis and mediators of the TGF-β1 pathway in the bleomycin (BLM) model of fibrosis. Fibrosis was induced into the skin of female C57BL/6 mice by repeated injections of BLM (50 μg/100 μL) subcutaneously. Mice received daily oral gavage with either vehicle (propylene glycol) or 17,20S(OH)2pD using 5, 15, or 30 μg/kg for 21 days. The injected skin was biopsied; analyzed histologically; examined for total collagen by Sircol; and examined for mRNA expression of MMP-13, BMP-7, MCP-1, Gli1, and Gli2 by TR-PCR. Spleen was analyzed for lymphocytes using flow cytometry. Serum was analyzed for cytokines using a multiplexed ELISA. Results showed that all three doses of 17,20S(OH)2pD suppressed net total collagen production, dermal thickness, and total collagen content in the BLM fibrosis model. 17,20S(OH)2pD also increased MMP-13 expression, decreased MCP-1 and Gli-2 expression in vivo, and suppressed serum levels of IL-13, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17, and IL-12p70. In summary, 17,20S(OH)2pD modulates the mediators of fibrosis in vivo and suppresses total collagen production and dermal thickness. This antifibrotic property of 17,20S(OH)2pD offers new therapeutic approaches for fibrotic disorders.  相似文献

Hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs) have been identified as metabolites of PBDEs, and also as compounds of natural origin in the marine environment; however, there has only been very limited study of their presence in the abiotic environment. In the present study, OH-PBDEs were determined in samples of surface water and precipitation (rain and snow) collected from sites in Ontario, Canada. OH-PBDEs were detected in all the samples analyzed, although half of the observed peaks did not correspond to any of the 18 authentic standards available. Fluxes of sigmaOH-PBDEs ranged from 3.5 to 190 pg/m2 in snow and from 15 to 170 pg/m2/day in rain, and those were higher at three of the southern Ontario locations relative to a single northern remote site. Concentrations of sigmaOH-PBDEs ranged from 2.2 to 70 pg/L in water and from < 1 to 420 pg/g in particulate organic carbon (POC), and higher values were found near sewage treatment plant (STP) outfalls in Lake Ontario. Partition coefficients (log K(oc)) for OH-PBDEs ranged from 4.0 to 5.1. The results in this study suggest that OH-PBDEs are ubiquitous in the abiotic environment and most likely are produced through reaction of PBDEs with atmospheric OH radicals. As well, they may be present in surface waters near STPs due to oxidation of PBDEs and inflows from metabolism by humans and animals.  相似文献
