The cognitive-developmental approach of L. Kohlberg (1958) and his collaborators has not been extensively used in the study of adolescent female delinquents. The purpose of the present research was to employ this approach to establish the level of moral judgment in Ss at the beginning and end of a reeducation process; Ss were 29 adolescent girls. Results indicate that (a) Ss at the beginning of this process were functioning at the preconventional level, whereas those at the end of the process were functioning at the conventional level; and (b) although the reeducation process had a positive effect on the global moral judgment functioning level, in certain areas such as the parent–child relationship and sexuality, all Ss remained at the preconventional level. Interpersonal attraction in exchange and communal relationships.

Communal relationships, in which the giving of a benefit in response to a need for the benefit is appropriate, are distinguished from exchange relationships, in which the giving of a benefit in response to the receipt of a benefit is appropriate. Based on this distinction, it was hypothesized that the receipt of a benefit after the person has been benefited leads to greater attraction when an exchange relationship is preferred and decreases attraction when a communal relationship is desired. These hypotheses were supported in Exp I, which used 96 male undergraduates. Exp II, which used a different manipulation of exchange vs communal relationships with 80 female undergraduates, supported the hypotheses that (a) a request for a benefit after the S is aided by the other leads to greater attraction when an exchange relationship is expected and decreases attraction when a communal relationship is expected, and (b) a request for a benefit in the absence of prior aid from the other decreases attraction when an exchange relationship is expected. Some of the concerns people have about A1 are: its misuses, effect on unemployment, and its potential for dehurnanising. Contrary to what most people believe and fear, GIcan lead to respect for the enormous power and complexity of the human mind. It is potentially very dangerous for users in the public domain to impute much more inferential power to computer systems, which look common-sensical, than they actually have. No matter how impressive A1 programs may be, we must be aware of their limitations and should not abrogate human responsibility to such programs.

Effect of acidified sodium chlorite treatment on chicken carcases processed in South Australia

A trial on the effectiveness of acidified sodium chlorite (ASC) on Salmonella and Campylobacter was undertaken on chicken carcases after they exited the screw chiller of a commercial premises in Adelaide, Australia. On untreated carcases mean log10 total viable count (25 degrees C) was 2.78/cm2 compared with 1.23/cm2 on treated carcases. Prevalence of E. coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter was 100%, 90% and 100% respectively, on untreated carcases and 13%, 10% and 23% respectively, on treated carcases. The distributions of E. coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter (mean log10 of positive samples) from untreated carcases were 1.55, -1.80 and 1.59/cm2 respectively, and -0.64, -1.85 and -2.21/cm2 respectively, on treated carcases. On untreated carcases S. Sofia and S. Infantis were isolated from 73% and 37% of carcases, respectively; only S. Sofia was isolated from treated carcases. The significant reductions in both prevalence and concentration demonstrated in the present trial indicate that ASC is a risk management option immediately available to the poultry industry.     

Online standard additions calibration of transient signals for inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

An online standard additions calibration method for transient signals in ICPMS is demonstrated in which a small volume of standard is injected as a spike into the sample/carrier stream, overlaying the analyte peak. This technique provides the advantages of conventional standard additions but requires only a single sample run. The method corrects for matrix effects and is suitable for transient signals in which the severity of the matrix effect changes over the analyte peak. The method uses a peak-fitting program to determine the area of the underlying peak and is shown to be effective for the determination of trace metal concentrations in both a high ionic strength matrix and in a biological matrix (urine). Eight analytes with concentrations in the range of 0.82-233.2 mug L-1 in urine were simultaneously determined using a standard spiking solution of 75 mug L-1 injected through a 100-muL loop. The measured concentrations for analytes free of spectral interferences agreed with the certified values, and the precision achieved was comparable to that achieved by the certifying agency. Using a conventional cross-flow nebulizer and Scott-type spray chamber, the accuracy obtained for online standard additions calibration was within 2%, and the precision was within 5%.     

Imaging polarimetry in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration

Imaging polarimetry was used to examine different components of neovascular membranes in age-related macular degeneration. Retinal images were acquired with a scanning laser polarimeter. An innovative pseudocolor scale, based on cardinal directions of color, displayed two types of image information: relative phases and magnitudes of birefringence. Membranes had relative phase changes that did not correspond to anatomical structures in reflectance images. Further, membrane borders in depolarized light images had significantly higher contrasts than those in reflectance images. The retinal birefringence in neovascular membranes indicates optical activity consistent with molecular changes rather than merely geometrical changes.     

Design,Synthesis, and Evaluation of Novel Ferroquine and Phenylequine Analogues as Potential Antiplasmodial Agents

7‐Chloroquinoline‐based antimalarial drugs are effective in the inhibition of hemozoin formation in the food vacuole of the Plasmodium parasite, the causative agent of malaria. We synthesized five series of ferroquine (FQ) and phenylequine (PQ) derivatives, which display good in vitro efficacy toward both the chloroquine‐sensitive (CQS) NF54 (IC₅₀: 4.2 nm ) and chloroquine‐resistant (CQR) Dd2 (IC₅₀: 33.7 nm ) strains of P. falciparum. Several compounds were found to have good inhibitory activity against β‐hematin formation in an NP‐40 detergent assay, with IC₅₀ values ranging between 10.4 and 19.2 μm .
