Controlled Suzuki–Miyaura coupling polymerization of 7′‐bromo‐9′,9′‐dioctyl‐fluoren‐2′‐yl‐4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐[1,3,2]dioxaborolane initiated by bromo(4‐tert‐butoxycarbonylamino‐phenyl)(tri‐tert‐butylphosphine)palladium ( 1 ) or bromo(4‐diethoxyphosphoryl‐phenyl)(tri‐tert‐butylphosphine)palladium ( 2 ) yields functionalized polyfluorenes (Mn = 4 × 103 g mol?1, Mw/Mn < 1.2) with a single amine or phosphonic acid, respectively, end‐group. High temperature synthesis of cadmium selenide quantum dots with these functionalized polyfluorenes as stabilizing ligands yields hybrid particles consisting of good quality (e.g. emission full width at half maximum of 30 nm; size distribution σ < 10%) inorganic nanocrystals with polyfluorene attached to the surface, as corroborated by transmission electron microscopy analysis and analytical ultracentrifugation. Sedimentation studies on particle dispersions show that a substantial portion (ca. half) of the phosphonic acid terminated polyfluorene ligands is bound to the inorganic nanocrystals, versus ca. 5% for the amino‐functionalized polyfluorene ligands. Single particle micro‐photoluminescence spectroscopy shows an efficient and complete energy transfer from the polyfluorene layer to the inorganic quantum dot. 相似文献

Literature has much to offer the psychotherapist. This paper has discussed some lessons for the psychotherapist contained in Franz Kafka's short story, The Metamorphosis. The therapist, like the therapist-reader of this story, can empathize with Gregor's monstrous change but still must hold him personally accountable. At the same time, the therapist-reader becomes increasingly impressed with the malignant nature of the Samsa household, and its role in generating Gregor's capacity for self-deception. The story also instructs about the paradox of catastrophe: Gregor is treated no less respectfully after his metamorphosis than he was before it. The therapist is thereby reminded of the centrality of feelings in human affairs. The constriction of Gregor's space does not cut him off from human feeling; rather, Gregor's inability to access, know, and take responsibility for his own feelings, especially his destructive ones, results in his constrictedness and detachment. In thinking about the story as dream, or in imagining a patient's account of a reality situation as if it were a dream, unseen mental process and content become more apparent. The disgusting, loathsome arrangements that people make with each other can evoke, be it in the therapist-reader or the therapist, reactions of aversion or hate. Such arrangements become more understandable when the importance, sometimes the necessity, of human attachment is appreciated. And finally, Kafka's The Metamorphosis alerts us to a sometimes but powerful preference and countertransference pitfall: we don't want to be bugged. 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To explore 2 facets of dopamine receptor sensitivity in alcoholics: (1) whether reduced sensitivity of central dopamine receptors is correlated with anxiety, depression, or novelty seeking and (2) whether this reduction is associated with poor treatment outcome. METHOD: Sixty-four alcohol-dependent patients were assessed according to their clinical outcome, sensitivity of central dopamine receptors (apomorphine-induced growth hormone secretion), mood states, and personality traits before and after detoxification. RESULTS: Patients with poor treatment outcome displayed a blunted growth hormone response before, but not after, detoxification. Growth hormone response was not significantly correlated with novelty seeking. Relapsing patients tended to be less depressed than patients who remained abstinent during observation. CONCLUSION: This study did not support the hypothesis that reduced sensitivity of dopamine receptors is associated with anxiety, depressed mood, or high novelty seeking in alcoholism. 相似文献

Invasion of endothelial tissues may be crucial in a Listeria monocytogenes infection leading to meningitis and/or encephalitis. Internalization of L. monocytogenes into endothelial cells has been previously demonstrated by using human umbilical vein endothelial cells as a model system. However, during the crossing of the blood-brain barrier, L. monocytogenes most likely encounters brain microvascular endothelial cells which are strikingly different from macrovascular or umbilical vein endothelial cells. In the present study human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMEC) were used to study the interaction of L. monocytogenes with endothelial cells, which closely resemble native microvascular endothelial cells of the brain. We show that L. monocytogenes invades HBMEC in an InlB-dependent and wortmannin-insensitive manner. Once within the HBMEC, L. monocytogenes replicates efficiently over a period of at least 18 h, moves intracellularly by inducing actin tail formation, and spreads from cell to cell. Using a green fluorescent protein-expressing L. monocytogenes strain, we present direct evidence that HBMEC are highly resistant to damage by intracellularly growing L. monocytogenes. Infection of HBMEC with L. monocytogenes results in foci of heavily infected, but largely undamaged endothelial cells. Heterologous plaque assays with L. monocytogenes-infected P388D1 macrophages as vectors demonstrate efficient spreading of L. monocytogenes into HBMEC, fibroblasts, hepatocytes, and epithelial cells, and this phenomenon is independent of the inlC gene product. 相似文献

Tufted capuchins (Cebus apella) were provided with a task that facilitated the use and modification of sticks as probing tools. It was found that subjects aged 10 years or older at initial task exposure were less likely to use tools than were younger subjects. Furthermore, juveniles whose mothers died before the subjects were aged 3 years were less likely to use tools than were juveniles whose mothers survived through this period. The ability to use tools was not related to subject sex or to access to the tool site or raw tool materials. Subjects modified tools both before and during their use, and the relative percentage of tools modified increased with subject age. Thus, it appears that capuchins most readily acquire tool use before the age of 10 years and that early disruption of the mother–infant relationship has deleterious effects on the emergence of instrumental behavior. Selection bias can be the most important threat to internal validity in intervention research, but is often insufficiently recognized and controlled. The bias is illustrated in research on parental interventions (punishment, homework assistance); medical interventions (hospitalization); and psychological interventions for suicide risk, sex offending, and juvenile delinquency. The intervention selection bias is most adequately controlled in randomized studies or strong quasi-experimental designs, although recent statistical innovations can enhance weaker designs. The most important points are to increase awareness of the intervention selection bias and to systematically evaluate plausible alternative explanations of data before making causal conclusions. BACKGROUND: Tecogalan sodium is an angiogenesis inhibitor isolated from a sulfated polysaccharide produced by the bacterium Arthrobacter. The antiangiogenic effect of tecogalan sodium is thought to be mediated by the inhibition of binding of basic fibroblast growth factor to cellular receptors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A phase I study was conducted in thirty-three patients with refractory malignancies, including AIDS-associated Kaposi's sarcoma. Patients received a single i.v. infusion every three weeks with the infusion duration ranging from one to twenty-four hours. Seven different dosage levels were studied (125, 185, 240, 300, 390, 445, and 500 mg/m2). RESULTS: The primary dose-limiting toxicity was prolongation of the activated partial thromboplastin time with peak times being between 1.0-4.0 times the upper limit of normal. This toxicity was ameliorated at a given dose level by prolonging the infusion time. Other common toxicities included fever (40%) and rigors (31%) which were well controlled with acetominophen and meperidine. The serum half-life of tecogalan sodium was between 1-1.5 hours and < 25% of unchanged drug was excreted in the urine. CONCLUSIONS: The recommended phase II dose of tecogalan sodium on this schedule is 390 mg/m2 over 24 hours. Other schedules including continuous administration should be investigated to maximize the efficacy of this novel angiogenesis inhibitor. 相似文献

A leading-edge 90-nm technology with 1.2-nm physical gate oxide, 45-nm gate length, strained silicon, NiSi, seven layers of Cu interconnects, and low-/spl kappa/ CDO for high-performance dense logic is presented. Strained silicon is used to increase saturated n-type and p-type metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) drive currents by 10% and 25%, respectively. Using selective epitaxial Si/sub 1-x/Ge/sub x/ in the source and drain regions, longitudinal uniaxial compressive stress is introduced into the p-type MOSEFT to increase hole mobility by >50%. A tensile silicon nitride-capping layer is used to introduce tensile strain into the n-type MOSFET and enhance electron mobility by 20%. Unlike all past strained-Si work, the hole mobility enhancement in this paper is present at large vertical electric fields in nanoscale transistors making this strain technique useful for advanced logic technologies. Furthermore, using piezoresistance coefficients it is shown that significantly less strain (/spl sim/5 /spl times/) is needed for a given PMOS mobility enhancement when applied via longitudinal uniaxial compression versus in-plane biaxial tension using the conventional Si/sub 1-x/Ge/sub x/ substrate approach. 相似文献
