Is the Jaw Bone Micro-Structure Altered in Response to Osteoporosis and Bisphosphonate Treatment? A Micro-CT Analysis

The aim of the study was to quantify the micro-architectural changes of the jaw bone in response to ovariectomy, exposed or not to bisphosphonate treatment. A total of 47 Wistar rats were ovariectomized (OVX) or sham-operated (shOVX) and exposed to osteoporosis preventive treatment for eight weeks either with bisphosphonates (alendronate, ALN; group OVX-ALN) three days/week at a dose of 2 mg/kg or with saline solution (untreated control condition; group OVX). The bone morphometric parameters of the trabecular jaw bone were assessed using ex vivo micro-computed tomography. The regions of interest investigated in the maxilla were the inter-radicular septum of the second molar and the tuber. The regions quantified in the mandible included the three molar regions and the condyle. A one-way analysis of variance followed by pairwise comparison using Tukey’s HSD and the Games–Howell test was conducted to explore significant differences between the groups. In the maxilla, OVX decreased the bone volume in the inter-radicular septum of the second molar. Bisphosphonate treatment was able to prevent this deterioration of the jaw bone. The other investigated maxillary regions were not affected by (un)treated ovariectomy. In the mandible, OVX had a significant negative impact on the jaw bone in the buccal region of the first molar and the inter-radicular region of the third molar. Treatment with ALN was able to prevent this jaw bone loss. At the condyle site, OVX significantly deteriorated the trabecular connectivity and shape, whereas preventive bisphosphonate treatment showed a positive effect on this trabecular bone region. No significant results between the groups were observed for the remaining regions of interest. In summary, our results showed that the effects of ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis are manifested at selected jaw bone regions and that bisphosphonate treatment is capable to prevent these oral bone changes.     

A joint physics-based statistical deformable model for multimodalbrain image analysis

A probabilistic deformable model for the representation of multiple brain structures is described. The statistically learned deformable model represents the relative location of different anatomical surfaces in brain magnetic resonance images (MRIs) and accommodates their significant variability across different individuals. The surfaces of each anatomical structure are parameterized by the amplitudes of the vibration modes of a deformable spherical mesh. For a given MRI in the training set, a vector containing the largest vibration modes describing the different deformable surfaces is created. This random vector is statistically constrained by retaining the most significant variation modes of its Karhunen-Loève expansion on the training population. By these means, the conjunction of surfaces are deformed according to the anatomical variability observed in the training set. Two applications of the joint probabilistic deformable model are presented: isolation of the brain from MRI using the probabilistic constraints embedded in the model and deformable model-based registration of three-dimensional multimodal (magnetic resonance/single photon emission computed tomography) brain images without removing nonbrain structures. The multi-object deformable model may be considered as a first step toward the development of a general purpose probabilistic anatomical atlas of the brain.     

Effect of the Magnetic Order on 3He Crystals

Solid ³He orders magnetically into two different phases below the Néel transition depending on the magnetic field (U2D2 or low field phase below 450 mT and CNAF or high field phase above 450 mT). We have performed measurements of the growth velocities and determined the step energies for different facets in both phases at B=0 T and B=2 T. It was found that the growth rate is much faster at B=2 T than at zero magnetic field. We conclude that the interface couples strongly to the crystal lattice at zero magnetic field while it seems to couple weakly at B=2 T. The ordering of the spins in the solid clearly affects the growth velocity of the crystals by an order of magnitude. Y.A. Parshin, permanently at the P.L. Jasmonic acid stimulates the expression of nod genes in Rhizobium

Jasmonates and salicylic acid are considered to be signal molecules that induce a variety of plant genes involved in wound or defence response, as well as affecting nos promoter activity. In this paper we examined whether these chemicals could also affect nod genes from isogenic rhizobia strains. Isogenic strains contain the Rhizobium leguminosarum nodA promoter fused to the lacZ gene of Escherichia coli and differ only in the source of the regulatory nodD gene. Naringenin, jasmonic acid and methyl jasmonate induced expression of nod genes in strain RBL1284 and salicylic acid showed no activity alone or when used in combination with other compounds; addition of naringenin + jasmonic acid produced a synergistic effect. Results obtained with strain RBL5284 were similar to those for RBL1284 albeit the combination of naringenin with the other compounds markedly inhibited nod gene expression. Whereas RBL5283 responded to naringenin with a strong induction, jasmonic acid, methyl jasmonate or salicylic acid showed no significant responses. The inhibitory effect of salicylic acid on nod gene expression indicates that the induction mechanism of jasmonic acid, methyl jasmonate, N-propyldihydrojasmonate and naringenin is probably different from that of salicylic acid.     

COMBINED CONVECTIVE-MICROWAVE DRYING OF AGAR GELS: INFLUENCE OF MICROWAVE POWER ON DRYING KINETICS

The use of microwave energy in the drying of deformable material such as gel considerably reduces drying time and enables the control of retraction in the sample. A further advantage is that no hot spots are produced, allowing a dry product of superior quality to be obtained.The aim of this work has been to determine the kinetics of the convective-microwave drying process of agar gel plates. For this purpose, we developed a pilot closed loop, computer-controlled apparatus of convective-microwave drying, that enables the drying air conditions to be changed and the microwave power to be supplied over a wide value range. The equipment also records the sample surface temperature by means of an infrared thermometer. The drying curves obtained for plane geometry present four different drying phases: an initial phase where a rapid increase in the drying rate and in the surface temperature can be observed, as well as a constant rate phase that ends in the so-called convective critical moisture content, a first falling rate phase that concludes in the microwave critical moisture point, and finally a second falling rate phase. Combined convective-microwave drying enables a considerable reduction in drying time compared to convective drying, the time required being inversely proportional to the microwave power supplied. The empirical equation that best represents the kinetics is of the Page type. The absorbed volumetric power in terms of the moisture content was experimentally estimated, with the experimental data fitting an empirical equation.     

Carcinoma of Bellini's ducts: apropos of a case

OBJECTIVE: To report an additional case of collecting duct carcinoma of the kidney, known as carcinoma of Bellini. METHODS/RESULTS: A 65-year-old male patient was admitted for left renal pain. An ultrasound scan showed a solid right renal mass. The patient underwent extended radical nephrectomy. Pathological analysis of the surgical specimen disclosed carcinoma of Bellini. The patient is asymptomatic 18 months postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS: Carcinoma of Bellini is an uncommon tumor type arising from the collecting duct cells and accounts for 0.5%-2% of all renal tumors.     

An electrochemical-based fuel-cell model suitable for electrical engineering automation approach

This paper presents a dynamic electrochemical model for representation, simulation, and evaluation of performance of small size generation systems emphasizing particularly proton exchange membrane fuel-cell (PEMFC) stacks. The results of the model are used to predict the output voltage, efficiency, and power of FCs as a function of the actual load current and of the constructive and operational parameters of the cells. Partial and total load insertion and rejection tests were accomplished to evaluate the dynamic response of the studied models. The results guarantee a better analytical performance of these models with respect to former ones with a consequent reduction in time and costs of projects using FCs as the primary source of energy. Additionally, this electrochemical model was tested for the SR-12 Modular PEM Generator, a stack rated at 500 W, manufactured by Avista Laboratories, for the Ballard Mark V FC and for the BCS 500-W stack.

Pentylenetetrazol is a convulsive drug acting on gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA[A]) gated-chloride receptors. In this study we used a subconvulsive dose (30 mg/kg) of pentylenetetrazol to induce a fully kindled state in rats. Glutamate receptors were evaluated using [3H]-[1(2-thienylcyclohexyl)]-piperidin (TCP) and [3H]kainate receptor autoradiography and [3H]muscimol autoradiography was used to study GABA(A) receptors. In fully kindled rats decreased N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor binding was found in parietal cortex, area CA2 of hippocampus and piriform cortex. Decreased kainate receptor binding was observed in all areas of the hippocampus, the medial amygdala and in the piriform cortex in the kindled rats. In contrast, GABA(A) receptor binding increased in the dentate gyrus. It is concluded that modulatory neuronal plasticity events are induced in fully pentylenetetrazol kindled rats, which appears to lead to decreased glutamatergic excitation and increased GABAergic inhibition in brain regions implicated in the development of seizure activity.     

Description of the immatures of workers of the ant Linepithema micans forel (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Linepithema micans Forel is a poorly studied species that is now considered a pest in vineyards in South Brazil. Larval characters have been used in a few phylogenetic studies, and their importance greatly depends in the amount of available information on different species. This study presents a complete panorama on the external morphology of the immatures of L. micans based on observations by light and scanning electron microscopy. The number of larval instars was estimated as three based on the frequency distribution of head widths of 965 larvae. Larvae of L. micans were similar to other Linepithema Mayr in the general format of body and mandibles, presenting a dorsal abdominal protuberance, nine pairs of spiracle, and unbranched hairs. On the other hand, L. micans was unique for having shorter hairs, predominantly denticulate, intraspecific variation in the number of antennal sensilla and in the types of sensilla on the labial palps were reported. Technical–economic analysis of wind-powered pumped hydrostorage systems. Part I: model development

In this paper the results of the application of a model for the technical and economic sizing of the various components that make up medium sized wind-powered pumped hydrostorage systems are discussed. The characteristics and unit energy cost of each technically feasible combination of components are determined by applying the model in the island of El Hierro (Canarian archipelago). This enables the selection of the most viable composition for the system from an economic point of view given certain technical restrictions. The results of the application of the model (developed in Part I) in El Hierro indicate that an annual renewable energy penetration of 68.40% can be achieved. This would mean a diesel oil saving of 7364 m³ and a decrease in CO₂ emissions of 20.91 Gg. Furthermore, the system would be economically competitive with conventional systems if fuel prices were 0.283 €/l.
