Two dimensional Josephson junction arrays (JJAs) offer theopportunity to study a variety of basic physical concepts. Thepresent review focuses on recent experimental work on thedynamics of JJAs, as characterized by ac conductancemeasurements. The review starts with a discussion of basicphysics necessary to describe JJAs. Some experimentalissues, array fabrication and measurement techniques areconsidered next. In a perpendicular magnetic field, a JJA isan experimental realization of the frustrated XY model, withthe frustration parameter f, corresponding to the number offlux quanta in a unit cell of the array, adjusted by themagnetic field. It is thereby possible to investigate thenature of the ground states at arbitrary frustrations. Phasetransitions are the next topic: the vortex unbindingtransition is observed at integer f-values, while, if thejunction coupling energies are appropriately varied across thearray, at half-integer f-values the Ising transition,associated with chiral symmetry breaking, may be observed.Some aspects of vortex dynamics, a subject which is not yetcompletely understood, are then considered. Under certainconditions there is virtually no pinning in JJAs, they aretherefore ideally suited for the study of vortex dynamics. Thenext topic of this review is concerned with the influence ofdisorder on the ground states and on the phase transitions inJJAs. Site percolation in JJAs has provided some insightsinto the physics of disordered systems and allowed to verifysome theoretical predictions on percolation in two dimensions.A quick look at JJAs in the underdamped regime concludesthis review.  相似文献

Recent photoemission experiments have discovered a highly monochromatized secondary electron peak emitted from diamondoid self-assembled monolayers on metal substrates. New experimental data and simulation results are presented to show that a combination of negative electron affinity and strong electron-phonon scattering is responsible for this behavior. The simulation results are generated using a simple Monte Carlo transport algorithm. The simulated spectra recreate the main spectral features of the measured ones.  相似文献

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has become established as a powerful and versatile tool for investigating local mechanical properties. In addition, through the AFM tip–sample interaction, it has become possible to study the effects of perturbations and modifications to the surface of soft samples, such as polymers. The accurate knowledge of their response to continuous AFM scanning could help to design new materials having desirable mechanical properties. In this paper, we present the results obtained by applying a new methodology to investigate wear properties on two different type of polymer, poly(methyl‐methacrylate) and poly(l ‐lactic acid). These polymers have been widely employed in biomedical applications and have recently been considered as good candidates for coronary metallic stent coatings. Radon (222Rn) concentration was evaluated in shops of the Savona Province, Italy, between summer 2002 and winter 2002-2003. The main characteristics of each shops were recorded through a questionnaire investigating the ventilation rate and factors related to 222Rn precursors in the soil and the construction materials. The main variables that were related to radon concentration were the following: age of the building, level of the shop above ground, season of the year, wind exposure, active windows, and type of heating system. Shops equipped with individual air heating/conditioning systems exhibited radon concentrations that were three times higher than those of shops heated by centralized furnaces. Our data indicate that the level of pollution in the shops was of medium level, with an expected low impact on the salespersons' health. Only in wintertime, the action level of 200 Bq m(-3) for the confined environment was reached in 10 shops equipped with individual air heating/conditioning systems.  相似文献

In this work we perform a theoretical analysis of the thermoelectric performance of polycrystalline Si nanowires (NWs) by considering both electron and phonon transport. The simulations are calibrated with experimental data from monocrystalline and polycrystalline structures. We show that heavily doped polycrystalline NW structures with grain size below 100 nm might offer an alternative approach to achieve simultaneous thermal conductivity reduction and power factor improvements through improvements in the Seebeck coefficient. We find that deviations from the homogeneity of the channel and/or reduction in the diameter may provide strong reduction in the thermal conductivity. Interestingly, our calculations show that the Seebeck coefficient and consequently the power factor can be improved significantly once the polycrystalline geometry is properly optimized, while avoiding strong reduction in the electrical conductivity. In such a way, ZT values even higher than the ones reported for monocrystalline Si NWs can be achieved.  相似文献

X-ray powder diffraction was combined, for the first time, with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy and direct infusion mass spectrometry to characterise fresh and brined grape leaves. Covariance analysis of data generated by the three techniques was performed with the aim to correlate information deriving from the solid part with those obtained for soluble metabolites. The results obtained indicate that crystalline components can be correlated to the metabolites contained in the grape leaves, paving the way to the use of X-ray diffraction analysis for food fingerprinting purposes. Moreover it was ascertained that, differently from most of the metabolites present in the fresh vine leaves, linolenic acid (an omega-3-fatty acid) and quercetin-3-O-glucuronide (a polyphenol metabolite) do not undergo sensible degradation during the brining process, which is used as preservative method for the grape leaves.  相似文献

Over the past ten years a great deal of literature has focused on the biotechnological potential of microalgal commercial applications, mainly in the field of biofuel production. However, the biofuel production is not yet competitive, mainly due to the incidence of the photobioreactor technology on the process cost. Besides, major advances in classic photobioreactor design, several novel configurations have been proposed in the last 20 years to improve their performance expressed in terms of light absorption, biomass productivity, light to biomass yield and photosynthetic efficiency. This review aims at analyzing and classifying the most recent advances and the several novel approaches to the design, development, control and modeling of photobioreactors. The diverse approaches are grouped considering irradiance strategies, multiphase hydrodynamics, mass transfer mechanisms, modeling approaches and control strategies. Contact maps of proteins are predicted with neural network-basedmethods, using as input codings of increasing complexity includingevolutionary information, sequence conservation, correlatedmutations and predicted secondary structures. Neural networksare trained on a data set comprising the contact maps of 173non-homologous proteins as computed from their well resolvedthree-dimensional structures. Proteins are selected from theProtein Data Bank database provided that they align with atleast 15 similar sequences in the corresponding families. Thepredictors are trained to learn the association rules betweenthe covalent structure of each protein and its contact map witha standard back propagation algorithm and tested on the sameprotein set with a cross-validation procedure. Our results indicatethat the method can assign protein contacts with an averageaccuracy of 0.21 and with an improvement over a random predictorof a factor >6, which is higher than that previously obtainedwith methods only based either on neural networks or on correlatedmutations. Furthermore, filtering the network outputs with aprocedure based on the residue coordination numbers, the accuracyof predictions increases up to 0.25 for all the proteins, withan 8-fold deviation from a random predictor. These scores arethe highest reported so far for predicting protein contact maps.  相似文献

Copolymers of lactic acid with mandelic or salicylic acid were synthetized through ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) and tested as protective coatings for stones. Most notably, glass transition temperature (Tg), hydrophobicity, and UV barrier properties were increased, making these materials more suitable as protective coating for outdoor stones than poly(lactic acid). A Tg of 76°C was obtained for the alternating copolymer lactic acid/mandelic acid and it was considerably higher than the one of poly(lactic acid) with similar molecular weight (50–55°C). Furthermore, the introduction of a perfluorinated moiety as chain‐end group, using a perfluoro alcohol as initiator of the ROP process, allowed to increase the hydrophobicity and stability of the new coatings. These polymers showed a good protective efficiency when applied on marble stones and preliminary stability tests under solar light showed low degradation, good stability to photo‐oxidative conditions, and negligible color changes after an aging time of 1000 h. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
