ABSTRACT

There is a need for accurate reporting of the second-growth forest in accounting for the contribution of secondary forests to achieving global carbon sequestration strategies. This study develops a model relating aboveground live biomass (AGLB) to Landsat reflectance measurements, and this method is used on multi spatial-temporal Landsat data (1998, 2001, 2004, 2011 and 2016) to assess changes in Miombo woodlands in Zambia. Results showed that the enhanced vegetation index was a better predictor of AGLB (r2 = 0.96; RMSE = 0.24 t ha?1) than the other assessed vegetation indices. Forest carbon stocks increased by an average rate of 3.65 ± standard error (SE): 0.56 t ha?1 yr?1 from 1998 to 2001, but a continual decline was evident for the periods 2001–2004 (?0.60 t ha?1 yr?1), 2004–2011 (?0.88 t ha?1 yr?1) and 2011–2016 (?2.03 t ha?1 yr?1). The study provides an empirical model for evaluating carbon stock changes.  相似文献

This article focuses on the optimisation of electrical and mechanical properties of hybrid blends of polyoxymethylene (POM) as primary thermoplastic matrix, polypyrrole (PPY) as secondary conducting polymer and graphene (G) as reinforcement. An initial Taguchi analysis was performed with a focus on improving electrical conductivity (σ) and tensile strength. A mixture analysis using ‘simplex’ statistical design was applied to develop an experimental subset that identified an optimal combination in weight-percentage. Both electrical and mechanical properties were improved by the addition of PPY and graphene particles due to hybridisation mechanism as well as double percolation threshold. The maximum electrical conductivity of 0.95 S cm?1 was achieved with POM reinforced with 3 wt.% of G and 2.5 wt.% of PPY loading. The mechanical properties were found to be increased with increase in addition of both G and PPY.  相似文献

Small size, high bandwidth pressure sensors are required for instrumentation of probes and test models in aerodynamic studies of complex unsteady flows. Optical-fiber pressure sensors promise potential advantages of small size and low cost in comparison with their electrical counterparts. We describe miniature Fabry-Perot cavity pressure sensors constructed by micromachining techniques in a turbine test application. The sensor bodies are 500 /spl mu/m squared, 300 /spl mu/m deep with a /spl sim/2 /spl mu/m-thick copper diaphragm electroplated on one face. The sensor cavity is formed between the diaphragm and the cleaved end of a single mode fiber sealed to the sensor by epoxy. Each sensor is addressed interferometrically in reflection by three wavelengths simultaneously, giving an unambiguous phase determination; a pressure sensitivity of 1.6 radbar/sup -1/ was measured, with a typical range of vacuum to 600 kPa. Five sensors were embedded in the trailing edge of a nozzle guide vane installed upstream of a rotor in a full-scale turbine stage transient test facility. Pressure signals in the trailing edge flow show marked structure at the 8 kHz blade passing frequency. To our knowledge, this is the first report of sensors located at the trailing edge of a normal-sized turbine blade.  相似文献

A technique for design optimization of a combustor is presented. This technique entails the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and mathematical optimization to minimize the combustor exit temperature profile. The empirical and semi-empirical correlations commonly used for optimizing combustor exit temperature profile do not guarantee optimum. As an experimental approach is time consuming and costly, use is made of numerical techniques. However, using CFD without mathematical optimization on a trial and error basis does not guarantee optimal solutions. A better approach, which is often viewed as too expensive, is a combination of the two approaches, thus incorporating the influence of the variables automatically. In this study the combustor exit temperature profile is optimized. The optimum (uniform) combustor exit temperature profile mainly depends on the geometric parameters. Combustor parameters have been used as optimization variables. The combustor investigated is an experimental liquid-fuelled atmospheric combustor with a turbulent diffusion flame. The CFD simulations use the Fluent code with a standard k? model. The optimization is carried out using the Dynamic-Q algorithm, which is specifically designed to handle constrained problems where the objective and constraint functions are expensive to evaluate. The optimization leads to a more uniform combustor exit temperature profile compared with the original.  相似文献

Presents an obituary for Sidney Orgel (1926-2003). Bud, as everyone knew him, received his bachelor's degree from New York University in 1948. He completed his master's (1950) and doctoral (1956) degrees in clinical psychology at the University of Connecticut. Bud joined the staff of the Syracuse Veterans Administration Hospital in 1956 and then in 1968 moved to the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center to develop a Division of Clinical Psychology. He remained at Upstate for the rest of his career and in 1993 was appointed professor emeritus. The high esteem in which he was held at Upstate is reflected in his selection as acting chair of the Department of Psychiatry, a position he held from 1981 to 1985 and a rare position for a psychologist. It was at Upstate that Bud's unique talents flourished. His first accomplishment was the development of one of the country's outstanding clinical psychology internships. The training and education of psychologists became a passion for him. Interns adored him, not only because he was an outstanding supervisor, but also because his trainees knew that his goal was providing them with the best possible experience and training. The attenuation and phase lag of pressure modulations transmitted through a solid foil from one chamber to another may be used to assess the diffusion and solubility coefficients of diffusant gas in the solid. A linear approximation is used to describe the cases of flow into (1) pumped and (2) equilibrated output chambers. It is shown that experiments based on this kind of system allow self-consistency checks to confirm diffusion limited flow and that pumped systems allow direct estimation of the index of the power law describing permeation. Experiments with hydrogen in nickel using a pumped system demonstrate close adherence, over a wide range of experimental parameters, to the expected frequency variation of output. In a laboratory study using seven fresh-frozen anatomic specimen knees, the effect of total knee arthroplasty on the three-dimensional kinematics of the patella, femur, and tibia were measured. Experiments were performed in the intact knee, after division of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), after total knee arthroplasty, and after 10 degrees internal rotation, 10 degrees external rotation, 5-mm medial shift, and 5-mm lateral shift of the femoral component on the femur. The presence of a high lateral ridge on the anterior surface of the femoral component effectively prevented patellar subluxation or dislocation, but displaced and tilted the patella medially. Internal rotation or medial displacement of the femoral component exaggerated this medial patellar displacement and shift. External rotation of the femoral component corrected it, except at flexion angles greater than 100 degrees, where the femur was shifted medially on the tibia and externally rotated 15 degrees. This combination produced a net 10-mm medial displacement of the patella relative to the tibia at 120 degrees knee flexion. Lateral placement of the femoral component compensated for the effect of the high lateral ridge and allowed more normal patellar tracking while allowing tibiofemoral motions similar to those seen after sectioning of the ACL. The kinematics of the patellofemoral and tibiofemoral joints were not reproduced with a total knee prosthesis that sacrifices the ACL. When using a prosthesis with a high lateral ridge, lateral placement of a femoral component prevented patellar dislocation and allowed patellar tracking patterns similar to those seen in the intact knee without further altering tibiofemoral motions.  相似文献

The goal of this study was the exploration of distal effects of alcohol use on condom use. Criminally involved adolescents completed an initial measure of attitudes, beliefs, and prior behavior. Of the 300 who completed the initial measurement, 267 (89%) completed a behavioral assessment 6 months later. Analyses validated a theoretical model of condom use intentions and indicated that intentions and attitudes measured at baseline were significant predictors of condom use behavior 6 months later. Neither alcohol use nor alcohol problems moderated relationships among model variables or the influence of intentions and attitudes on behavior. The findings do not support a distal role for alcohol use in altering the cognitive correlates of condom use intentions and behavior among high-risk adolescents. Using the Gleeble 1500, incremental and continuous hot compression tests, simulating hot rolling, were performed on C-Mn, Nb-T, and Nb steels with test temperatures varying between 875 and 1100°C and strain rates between 0.5 and 20 s?1. Four models are proposed. The stress peak model allows the prediction of continuous stress-strain curves from incremental curves and vice versa through the use of stress restoration index K. Variation in K for Nb-T1, C-Mn and Nb steels at strain rates of 3, 12 and 20 s?1 was found to be negligible. The predicted stress strain curve corresponds to experimental stress strain curve at same temperature and strain rate. The strain history model predicts continuous strain-time curves from incremental stress-strain curves using ‘constant’ ‘negative strain’ restoration index. At 950°C, with holding time 2 s and strain rate 12 s?1, strain time decay curves obtained for C-Mn, Nb and Nb-T, steels were ε = 1.5e?05t, ε = 1.2e?0.36t and ε = e?0.3t, respectively. The creep model analysis relates creep strain rate to the testing strain rate. For Nb steel at 875°C, and test strain rate of 12 s?1, ?creep was found to be 9.5 s?1. The stress history model predicts continuous stress-time curves from incremental stress-time curves. Stress decay curve for C-Mn steel at 1100°C and ? = 3s?1 was found to be σ = 181e?0.04t. Hot rolling characteristics of steels can be accurately predicted using hot compression tests and proposed models.  相似文献
