OBJECTIVE: The present study examined Web-based information retrieval as a function of age for two information organization schemes: hierarchical organization and one organized around tags or keywords. BACKGROUND: Older adults' performance in information retrieval tasks has traditionally been lower compared with younger adults'. The current study examined the degree to which information organization moderated age-related performance differences on an information retrieval task. The theory of fluid and crystallized intelligence may provide insight into different kinds of information architectures that may reduce age-related differences in computer-based information retrieval performance. METHOD: Fifty younger (18-23 years of age) and 50 older (55-76 years of age) participants browsed a Web site for answers to specific questions. Half of the participants browsed the hierarchically organized system (taxonomy), which maintained a one-to-one relationship between menu link and page, whereas the other half browsed the tag-based interface, with a many-to-one relationship between menu and page. This difference was expected to interact with age-related differences in fluid and crystallized intelligence. RESULTS: Age-related differences in information retrieval performance persisted; however, a tag-based retrieval interface reduced age-related differences, as compared with a taxonomical interface. CONCLUSION: Cognitive aging theory can lead to interface interventions that reduce age-related differences in performance with technology. In an information retrieval paradigm, older adults may be able to leverage their increased crystallized intelligence to offset fluid intelligence declines in a computer-based information search task. APPLICATION: More research is necessary, but the results suggest that information retrieval interfaces organized around keywords may reduce age-related differences in performance.  相似文献

Mutual Information (MI) is popular for registration via function optimisation. This work proposes an inverse compositional formulation of MI for Levenberg-Marquardt optimisation. This yields a constant Hessian, which may be pre-computed. Speed improvements of 15% were obtained, with convergence accuracies similar to those of the standard formulation.  相似文献

Given two to four synchronized video streams taken at eye level and from different angles, we show that we can effectively combine a generative model with dynamic programming to accurately follow up to six individuals across thousands of frames in spite of significant occlusions and lighting changes. In addition, we also derive metrically accurate trajectories for each one of them.Our contribution is twofold. First, we demonstrate that our generative model can effectively handle occlusions in each time frame independently, even when the only data available comes from the output of a simple background subtraction algorithm and when the number of individuals is unknown a priori. Second, we show that multi-person tracking can be reliably achieved by processing individual trajectories separately over long sequences, provided that a reasonable heuristic is used to rank these individuals and avoid confusing them with one another.  相似文献

Vulnerability to sudden service disruptions due to deliberate sabotage and terrorist attacks is one of the major threats of today. In this paper, we present a bilevel formulation of the r-interdiction median problem with fortification (RIMF). RIMF identifies the most cost-effective way of allocating protective resources among the facilities of an existing but vulnerable system so that the impact of the most disruptive attack to r unprotected facilities is minimized. The model is based upon the classical p-median location model and assumes that the efficiency of the system is measured in terms of accessibility or service provision costs. In the bilevel formulation, the top level problem involves the decisions about which facilities to fortify in order to minimize the worst-case efficiency reduction due to the loss of unprotected facilities. Worst-case scenario losses are modeled in the lower-level interdiction problem. We solve the bilevel problem through an implicit enumeration (IE) algorithm, which relies on the efficient solution of the lower-level interdiction problem. Extensive computational results are reported, including comparisons with earlier results obtained by a single-level approach to the problem.  相似文献

Cyclic voltammetry is recorded of the oxidation of ferrocyanide on a glassy carbon electrode modified with multiple layers of single-walled carbon nanotubes. The current response is interpreted in terms of semi-infinite planar diffusion towards the macro-electrode surface and in terms of oxidation of the electroactive species trapped in pockets in between the nanotubes. A thin layer model is used to illustrate the effects of diffusion within a porous layer. It is found that a semi-infinite planar diffusion model alone is not appropriate for interpreting the kinetics of the electron transfer at this electrode surface. In particular, caution should be exercised in respect of comparing voltammetric peak-to-peak potential separations between naked electrodes and nanotube-modified electrodes for the inference of electrocatalysis via electron transfer via the nanotubes.  相似文献

In the field of micro-technology the production of metallic and ceramic micro-components by powder injection molding (PIM) has become a more and more established fabrication method. But in order to fulfill the demand for more complex-shaped high-precision micro-components further development work has to be performed. This is especially true if more efficient production routes for multi-component-micro-assemblies consisting of different materials or sub-components are envisaged. To meet these challenges, investigations are performed to realize and to establish two primary shape micro-processes. These are two-component micro-injection molding (2C-MicroPIM) and sinter-joining. The realization of these technologies will lead to a markedly reduction of the efforts for handling, adjustment, and assembling of metallic and ceramic micro-assemblies. Furthermore, an increased integration level and functionality can be yielded. For an effective transfer of scientific results to industrial applications the whole process chain must be considered, from development and construction of the tooling as well as of the components to the quality assurance and determination of the properties of the assemblies after sintering. These primary shape processes shall enable the mutual processing of different materials within the fabrication process, so avoiding separate mounting or assembling steps. Additionally fixed and loose junctions between at least two components shall be realized. The progress in research and development will be demonstrated especially by the implementation of shaft-to-collar connections between micro-gearwheels and corresponding shafts. Regarding two-component micro-injection molding, the tool construction for shaft-to-collar connections will be presented as well as first experimental results on the properties of selected ceramic powders and feedstocks for the special requirements of the 2C-MicroPIM process. With the assembly step being performed outside the injection molding tool before sinter-joining different parts and geometries can be combined quite easily. The presented article gives an overview on the concept and on preliminary testing results for the fabrication of a shaft-to-collar-connection. Additionally, a solution for an automated assembly of a shaft and a toothed wheel outside the injection molding tool is presented.  相似文献

Probabilistic structural design deals with uncertainties in response (e.g. stresses) and capacity (e.g. failure stresses). The calculation of the structural response is typically expensive (e.g., finite element simulations), while the capacity is usually available from tests. Furthermore, the random variables that influence response and capacity are often disjoint. In previous work we have shown that this disjoint property can be used to reduce the cost of obtaining the probability of failure via Monte Carlo simulations. In this paper we propose to use this property for an approximate probabilistic optimization based on exact capacity and approximate response distributions (ECARD). In Approximate Probabilistic Optimization Using ECARD, the change in response distribution is approximated as the structure is re-designed while the capacity distribution is kept exact, thus significantly reducing the number of expensive response simulations. ECARD may be viewed as an extension of SORA (Sequential Optimization and Reliability Assessment), which proceeds with deterministic optimization iterations. In contrast, ECARD has probabilistic optimization iterations, but in each iteration, the response distribution is approximated so as not to require additional response calculations. The use of inexpensive probabilistic optimization allows easy incorporation of system reliability constraints and optimal allocation of risk between failure modes. The method is demonstrated using a beam problem and a ten-bar truss problem. The former allocates risk between two different failure modes, while the latter allocates risk between members. It is shown that ECARD provides most of the improvement from risk re-allocation that can be obtained from full probabilistic optimization.  相似文献
