Home- and community-based care are deeply rooted in the United States and worldwide. Public and private organizations have provided formal in-home and community health services for more than a century. Today they are an integral part of the care continuum, ranging from highly technical and professional services to simple forms of non-professional and voluntary support in homes. Because the roles and functions of community workers have expanded and diversified, organizations must successfully recruit, train and support workers with widely differing skills. In health care's new economic era, health has re-emerged as a community rather than individual concern. Non-traditional models of service delivery will be the cornerstone of community-based health care. Providers and policy-makers must find new ways to refocus from treating illness to achieving and maintaining health.     

The role of physical attractiveness in the observation of adult-child interactions: Eye of the beholder or behavioral reality?

We examined the susceptibility of observations of adult–child interactions to bias due to the physical attractiveness of target persons in two studies. In Study 1, facial features of target persons were occluded in one version of a videotape and unoccluded in another, otherwise identical version. Using a global rating system and a molecular coding strategy, 38 trained observers coded occluded and unoccluded versions of four videotapes, two of which were of attractive targets and two of unattractive targets. When making global judgments about behavioral interactions, the observers were significantly and favorably biased toward attractive women. No bias was obtained, however, when observers used a molecular coding strategy. In Study 2, a sample of interactive behavior between an attractive target and an infant was matched with that of an unattractive target and the same infant. Sixty-four observers rated the behavioral interactions using three types of global variables. Once again, the observers were favorably biased toward the attractive target. The results demonstrate the need to be cautious about the use and interpretation of global ratings and suggest that molecular coding techniques may insulate observers from bias due to the attractiveness of the observed person. Tributary response to local base level lowering below a dam

Tributaries located immediately downstream from a dam responded to lowered local base level by incising vertically, widening, and expanding headwardly. The eight tributaries examined, join the Osage River along a 17 km reach directly below the Bagnell Dam in central Missouri. These tributaries flow through unconsolidated alluvium, and respond rapidly to base level lowering. Local base level lowering below Bagnell Dam is believed to result from a combination of factors, including an increase in channel cross-sectional area caused by degradation and channel widening, and hydrological desynchronization of the trunk river and the tributaries during periods of high discharge. Of these, degradation appears to be the most important cause of tributary incision. Age dates from cores of trees which project cross-channel roots indicate that tributary entrenchment has occurred after the closure of Bagnell Dam in 1931. Root-armoured knickpoints, subaerially exposed cross-channel tree roots, broken-off roots, and ‘within channel’ terraces provided the basis for reconstruction of relative pre-entrenchment tributary profiles which, when extended to the Osage River confluence, reveals the magnitude of entrenchment at the tributary mouth. The tributaries incised on average, 2·2 m and widened approximately 2·3 m at their mouths. Root armouring protracts the adjustment period of the tributaries and results in stepped longitudinal profiles. Tributary incision is episodic, and the influxes of high sediment discharge are out of phase from tributary to tributary.

Zusammenfassung Das Verfahren von F. K. Ligtenberg wurde derart abgewandelt, da? man es—nach kleinen Erg?nzungen— mit der üblichen Ausstattung eines spannungsoptischen Laboratoriums anwenden kann. Ferner wurden Auswertungsformeln für krummlinige Koordinaten entwickelt, ein zeichnerisches Verfahren zum unmittelbaren Bestimmen der Hauptkrümmungslinien aus den Moirélinien angegeben und das Aufl?sungsverm?gen des Verfahrens überschl?gig berechnet. Das abgewandelte Verfahren ist an Beispielen erprobt worden.     

Transmission through abrupt heterojunction potential barriers

A new expression is derived for the transmission coefficient of incident electrons scattered by a varying potential with discontinuities. The expression is applicable above, below, and near the potential peak. As an example, electron transmission across the energy barrier in the emitter of an InP/InGaAs heterojunction bipolar transistor is calculated. Excellent agreement with a numerical calculation is obtained, even for electron energies close to the potential peak, where other expressions fail. It is shown how this new approach reduces to other expressions in limiting cases, and its validity in comparison to other approximations is discussed     

Untersuchungen zum SwRK-Verhalten des unlegierten Stahles Ck 45 in chloridionenhaltigen wäßrigen Medien

Corrosion fatigue behaviour of steel Ck 45 in aqueous solutions containing chloride ions The fatigue behaviour of carbon steel Ck 45 (comparable to AISI 1045x) is investigated for cyclic tension and rotating bending load with a frequency of 25 Hz. The fatigue limits under cyclic tension load in air are 410 N/mm² for smooth specimens and 290 N/mm² for notched specimens. For rotating bending load a value of 200 N/mm² is found for smooth specimen. The fatigue limits for N = 10⁷ in two different environments (0.3% and 3% NaCl-solution) reach only 37–57% of the according values in air. Cathodic protection of smooth specimens causes an improvement to 95% of the air fatigue limit. The evaluation of the free corrosion potential for all corrosion fatigue tests and the appearence of fracture show typical attributes of corrosion fatigue in the active state.
