The information-theoretic capacity of continuous-time queues was analyzed recently by Anantharam and Verdu (see ibid. vol.42, p.4-18, 1996). Along similar lines, we analyze the information-theoretic capacity of two models of discrete-time queues. The first model has single packet arrivals and departures in a time slot and independent packet service times, and is the discrete-time analog of the continuous-time model analyzed by Anantharam and Verdu. We show that in this model, the geometric service time distribution plays a role analogous to that of the exponential distribution in continuous-time queues, in that, among all queues in this model with a given mean service time, the queue with geometric service time distribution has the least capacity. The second model allows multiple arrivals in each slot, and the queue is modeled as serving an independent random number of packets in each slot. We obtain upper and lower bounds on the capacity of queues with an arbitrary service distribution within this model, and show that the bounds coincide in the case of the queue that serves a geometrically distributed number of packets in each slot. Dry etching of InGaP, AlInP, and AlGaP in inductively coupled plasmas (ICP) is reported as a function of plasma chemistry (BCl3 or Cl2, with additives of Ar, N2, or H2), source power, radio frequency chuck power, and pressure. Smooth anisotropic pattern transfer at peak etch rates of 1000–2000Å·min?1 is obtained at low DC self-biases (?100V dc) and pressures (2 mTorr). The etch mechanism is characterized by a trade-off between supplying sufficient active chloride species to the surface to produce a strong chemical enhancement of the etch rate, and the efficient removal of the chlorinated etch products before a thick selvedge layer is formed. We demonstrate multi-emitter Si/GexSi1-x n-p-n heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBT's) which require no base contact for transistor operation. The base current is supplied by the additional emitter contact under reverse bias due to the heavy doping of the emitter-base junction. Large-area HBT test structures exhibit good transistor characteristics, with current gain β≈400 regardless of whether the base current is supplied by a test base electrode or one of the emitter contacts. These devices have enhanced logic functionality because of emitter contact symmetry. BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Granular cell tumors of the esophagus are rare tumors. A definite diagnosis is achieved by endoscopic biopsies in only 50% of cases. Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is the best procedure in the evaluation of upper gastrointestinal tract submucosal tumors. The aim of this study was to describe the endosonographic findings of esophageal granular cell tumors. METHODS: From January 1989 to March 1994, 15 patients with 21 granular cell tumors which had negative biopsies were examined by EUS (Olympus GF UM3 or GF UM20,7,5 and 12 MHz). In five cases, the tumor was also studied with a 20 MHz Olympus miniprobe. The final histological diagnoses were obtained by subsequent endoscopic snare resection in 20 cases and surgically in one case. RESULTS: The endosonographic features (with the GF UM3 or GF UM20) of esophageal granular cell tumors were: a) a tumor size of less than 2 cm in 95% of cases; b) an hypoechoic solid pattern in 100% of cases; c) a tumor arising in the inner layers in 95% (second echo-poor layer n=15; third echo-rich layer n=5). In one case, the endosonographic finding was transmural malignant infiltration of the esophageal wall (histologically confirmed). CONCLUSION: When a granular cell tumor of the esophagus is suspected, EUS can show the inner layer location of the tumor and thus contribute to planning the endoscopic resection or follow up. When the tumor also invades the outer layers, EUS can contribute to planning the surgical resection. 相似文献

PURPOSE: Ultrasound estimated bladder weight was compared before and after surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) to reveal a possible reversible change in bladder hypertrophy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ultrasound estimated bladder weight was measured before and after subcapsular (17) or transurethral (16) prostatectomy in 33 male patients with BPH. Sequential changes in the American Urological Association symptom score and urinary flow rate were also examined. RESULTS: Along with a significant improvement in the American Urological Association symptom scores and maximum flow rate, ultrasound estimated bladder weight decreased from 52.9 +/- 22.6 to 31.6 +/- 15.8 gm. in 12 weeks after treatment. In all but 4 patients (29 of 33, or 87.9%) ultrasound estimated bladder weight decreased to less than 35.0 gm. in 12 weeks after treatment. Interestingly, in all patients with an initial ultrasound estimated bladder weight of greater than 80 gm. the bladder weight still remained at an abnormally high level 12 weeks after treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Bladder hypertrophy was completely reversible after the surgical treatment of the obstruction in the majority of patients with BPH. The measurement of ultrasound estimated bladder weight was of value in monitoring therapeutic effects in BPH patients. An extraordinarily high ultrasound estimated bladder weight of 80 gm. or more might suggest degenerative and irreversible pathological changes in the bladder detrusor. 相似文献

1-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), a neurotoxin that produces Parkinsonism symptoms in man, has been examined as a substrate of recombinant human cytochrome P450 2D6. When cumene hydroperoxide is used as an oxygen and electron donor, a single product is formed, identified as 4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine. The K(m) for formation of this product (130 microM) is in agreement with the dissociation constants for MPTP binding to the enzyme determined by optical and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. When the reaction is carried out with nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (reduced) (NADPH) and recombinant human NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase, a second product, identified as 1-methyl-4-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine, is formed in addition to 4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine. The K(m) values for formation of these two products are 19 microM and 120 microM, respectively. Paramagnetic relaxation experiments have been used to measure distances between the protons of bound MPTP and the heme iron, and these have been used to construct models for the position and orientation of MPTP in the active site. For the cytochrome alone, a single mode of binding was observed, with the N-methyl close to the heme iron in a position appropriate for the observed N-demethylation reaction. In the presence of the reductase, the data were not consistent with a single mode of binding but could be explained by the existence of two alternative orientations of MPTP in the active site. One of these, characterized by a dissociation constant of 150 microM, is essentially identical to that observed in the absence of the reductase. In the second, which has a K(d) of 25 microM, the MPTP is oriented so that the aromatic ring is close to the heme iron, in a position appropriate for p-hydroxylation leading to the formation of the product seen only in the presence of the reductase. In the case of codeine, another substrate for cytochrome P450 2D6, the addition of reductase had no effect on the nature of the product formed, the dissociation constant, or the orientation in the binding site. These observations show that NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase has an allosteric effect on the active site of cytochrome P450 2D6 that affects the binding of some substrates but not others. 相似文献

Penetrating injuries of the eye are an important cause of unilateral visual loss. We studied a series of 82 cases of penetrating injuries treated here from 1987 through 1993. The injuries were caused by sharp objects in 66% and blunt trauma in 6%. The prognosis after a penetrating injury is greatly influenced by the nature of the injury and the extent of the initial drainage. Among factors associated with an unfavorable visual outcome were diminished preoperative visual acuity and scleral wounds with dense vitreous hemorrhage. 相似文献

Transglutaminase (TGase), responsible for crosslinking between proteins, is known to be localized exclusively in the egg envelope (chorion) of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and probably participates in the post-fertilization chorion hardening. We purified the TGase from unfertilized egg chorions by sequential chromatography using SP-Sepharose, Q-Sepharose, and TSK-gel G3000SWXL columns. The purified enzyme was a monomeric protein having the molecular mass of 76 kDa. It promoted incorporation of monodansyl-cadaverine into chorion protein and catalyzed the polymerization of chorion subunit proteins. The effect of various reagents suggested that the chorion TGase is a Ca2+-dependent SH-enzyme similar to the well-characterized TGases of various animals. The highest activity was observed at pH 6.0. The amines examined in the present study inhibited the TGase activity of the purified enzyme. However, they did not necessarily cause effective inhibition of its activity. These properties of the chorion TGase were essentially consistent with our previous observations on polymerization of chorion proteins, resulting in chorion hardening. We compared the amino acid composition of the purified TGase with those of the previously characterized TGases of fishes, such as chum salmon and red sea bream. The results suggest that the chorion 76 kDa TGase is not homologous with those liver TGases in terms of amino acid composition. 相似文献
