Mobilization and deposition of iron nano and sub-micrometer particles (INSMP) in a porous medium were investigated using a water-saturated glass micromodel. The deposition and detachment of INSMP in the micromodel were visualized by taking serial images and experimentally verified by analysis of breakthrough curves. This first visualization study of INSMP fate showed that there were dense aggregations at the pores as the concentration of INSMP increased. The presence of dissolved humic substances (>1 ppm) significantly reduced deposition of suspended particles and enhanced detachment of the deposited particles. The mobility of INSMP in the presence of Pahokee peat fulvic acid standard II (PPFA) was higher than for Pahokee peat humic acid standard I (PPHA) due to the presence of more aromatic groups and the molecular weight in PPFA. Interfacial energy estimation based on the DLVO theory revealed that the adsorption of humic substances onto the INSMP increased the energy barrier and reduced the depth of secondary minimum between particles. The “affinity transition” in the initial deposition of INSMP within the micromodel was observed in the presence of Pahokee peat humic substances.  相似文献

The combination of solvent annealing, surface reconstruction, and a tone-reversal etching procedure provides an attractive approach to utilize block copolymer (BCP) lithography to fabricate highly ordered and densely packed silicon oxide nano-dots on a surface. For the rapid and reliable detection of oxidized contaminants (i.e., nitrite, nitrate, perchlorate, dichromate) in water, a novel toxicity detection methodology based on sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) has been developed. The methodology exploits the ability of SOB to oxidize elemental sulfur to sulfuric acid in the presence of oxygen. The reaction results in an increase in electrical conductivity (EC) and a decrease in pH. When oxidized contaminants were added to the system, the effluent EC decreased and the pH increased due to the inhibition of the SOB. We found that the system can detect these contaminants in the 5-50 ppb range (in the case of NO(3)(-), 10 ppm was detected), which is lower than many whole-cell biosensors to date. At low pH, the oxidized contaminants are mostly in their acid or nonpolar, protonated form which act as uncouplers and make the SOB biosensor more sensitive than other whole-cell biosensors which operate at higher pH values where the contaminants exist as dissociated anions. The SOB biosensor can detect toxicity on the order of minutes to hours which can serve as an early warning so as to not pollute the environment and affect public health.  相似文献

Most scoring assays for yeast prions are dependent on specific genetic markers and constructs that differ for each prion. Here we describe a simple colour assay for the [URE3] prion that works in the 74D-964 strain frequently used to score the [PSI(+)] prion. Although this assay can only be used to score for [URE3] in the [psi(-)] version of the strain, it makes it easier to examine the effects of host mutations or environmental changes on [URE3] or [PSI(+)] using a colour assay in the identical genetic background.  相似文献

We report the synthesis, morphology, and magnetization characteristics of BiFeO(3) (BFO)-covered ZnO nanorod arrays (ZNAs). High quality and well-aligned ZNAs were grown by a hydrothermal method. BFO shells were deposited by sputtering at ambient temperature and then annealing in an oxygen atmosphere. The BFO shells crystallized to form a perovskite structure at 450?°C. Scanning electron microscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that the BFO shell was polycrystalline and randomly oriented, covering the ZnO nanorods well. The magnetization-magnetic field loops measured at 5 and 300 K indicate that the BFO/ZNA hetero-structure exhibits ferromagnetic order. The BFO/ZNA displays enhanced coercivity and saturated magnetization as compared with BFO thin films.  相似文献
