Condom use: A self-efficacy model.

A survey of heterosexually active college students gathered information about condom use, self-efficacy (SE), outcome expectancies, sexual attitudes, peer group influences, AIDS knowledge, and a perceived vulnerability to AIDS. On the basis of A. Bandura's (1986) social-cognitive theory, a structural model with SE as the central mediator was formulated and evaluated with LISREL. This model explained 46% of the variance in condom use from judgments of SE and effects attributable to peers and 53% of the variance in SE from outcome expectancies and peer group influences. Sexual attitudes, AIDS knowledge, and perceived vulnerability did not predict condom use. Most students were well-informed about HIV transmission but reported not feeling at risk, even though many engaged in risky sexual behavior. Histogram measurement of ADC nonlinearities using sine waves

This paper gives results concerning the measurement of differential and integral nonlinearity of ADC's using the histogram method with a sine wave input signal. We specify the amount of overdrive required as a function of the noise level and the desired accuracy and the number of samples required as a function of the desired accuracy, the desired confidence level, and the noise level. An analysis of the effect on the results of harmonic distortion of the applied signal is given. The error analysis assumes a mixture of coherent and random sampling rather than pure random sampling     

Development of an octocalcium phosphate cement

From previous studies it is known that alpha-tertiary calcium phosphate and dicalcium phosphate form a cement upon mixing with water. In this study this cement was optimized in terms of the milling of the constituents, their molar ratio, the amount of hydroxyapatite added and the water/powder ratio. The optimum Ca/P molar ratio of the cement mixture was 1.36±0.03. X-ray diffraction showed the reaction product to be octocalcium phosphate. Addition of precipitated hydroxypatite of over 3% diminished the final strength of the cement significantly. However, admixtures of only 2% of precipitated hydroxyapatite (a) kept the final compressive strength at 30±5 MPa after soaking in Ringers solution at 37°C, (b) diminished the initial setting time from 27.5 to 10 min and the final setting time from 65 to 40 min, (c) diminished the time in which the final strength was reached from 36 to less than 14 h. The tensile strength of this cement is 19±1% of its compressive strength. The optimum water/powder ratio as found in this study was 0.30 g/g.

Non-contact methods of measuring moisture concentration in external layers of building partitions II—Monitoring of the water vapour condensation on porous surfaces

This paper present the results of the investigation into a potential application of laser radiation for the detection of phase transition processes occurring on the surface layers of porous materials. An attempt was made to discuss in the approximation equations, the relationships between coefficients of the reflected light, the temperature and humidity of the surrounding environment. Laser light reflected from the porous surface carries information about the roughness of the structure. The presence of water microdrop on the surface of the porous material, as a result of condensation and thus a phase transition, leads to the phase displacement of individual rays, which is represented by different images. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis of the reflected light parameters allows a dynamic study of the phase transition phenomena without mechanical intervention.     

Photovaractor for remote optical control of microwave circuits

A photovaractor for the remote optical control of microwave circuits was studied. The photovaractor was fabricated as a p-i-n photodiode placed in a pigtailed fiber optical module. The study of the impedance in the frequency range up to 3 GHz in darkness and under illumination has shown that the photovaractor capacitance strongly depends on the incident optical power. The capacitance variation of the photovaractor diode under illumination is discussed
