Tensile strength of fine-grained soils has been extensively investigated by earlier researchers and several methodologies have been evolved for its determination. However, either most of these methods are not valid/applicable for a wide range of moisture contents or they involve tedious sample/specimen preparation. In this context, the methodology of determining tensile strength by employing thin films, which is available in the literature, has been found to be quite handy and useful. It has been observed that a unique relationship exists among the tensile strength, moisture content, and shrinkage characteristics of fine-grained soils. This methodology is appreciable due to its applicability to a wide range of moisture contents, comparable ease of sample preparation and testing, and the obtained results lack generalization. Exhaustive tests were conducted on fine-grained soils of entirely different characteristics and generalized relationships have been proposed between the percentage linear shrinkage, tensile strength, and moisture content (defined as liquid to solid ratio). Based on a critical analysis of the results available in the literature, the efficiency of such relationships for determination of tensile strength of fine-grained soils has been demonstrated. In the authors’ opinion, such relationships would be quite useful for determining tensile strength of fine-grained soils from their linear shrinkage, which can easily be measured in a conventional geotechnical engineering laboratory.  相似文献

In Al/SiCp metal matrix composites, in addition to machine, tool and process-related parameters, a change in composition (size and volume fraction of reinforcement) has a influence on machining force components. In the analytical models in the literature, the effect of abrasive reinforcement particles, which affects the coefficient of friction and consequently the friction angle, has not been considered while predicting cutting forces in machining of MMCs. In this paper, chip–tool interface friction in machining of Al/SiCp composites has been considered to involve two-body abrasion and three-body rolling caused due to presence of reinforcements in composites. The model evaluates resulting coefficient of friction to predict the cutting forces during machining of Al/SiCp composites using theory of oblique cutting. Further, the model considers various frictional forces on the wiper geometry on the cutting edge that has been found to improve the integrity of machined surface on composites. The predicted cutting force values were found to agree well with the corresponding experimental values for finer reinforcements composites with the assumption that 40% of the reinforcement particles contribute to the abrasion at chip–tool interface. However, for the coarser reinforcement composites, assumption that the 60% of the particles contribute to the abrasion yields better results.  相似文献

This paper presents a new constructive heuristic, based on the principle of job insertion, for minimizing makespan in no-wait permutation flow shop scheduling problems. Empirical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach over four of the best-known methods in the literature. Analytical expressions for the total number of partial and complete sequences generated by the algorithms are derived. Statistical tests of significance substantiate the improvement in solution quality.  相似文献

Cardiac catheterization is one of the critical procedures in patient care. It is pertinent for all process related issues in this department to be handled with due priority. This research is a cross-functional effort with a leading hospital that was in its planning stage to implement an overall process improvement at its cardiac catheterization lab department. It has been determined that significant process delays exist in this department. One of the identified key factors to process improvement was to reduce patient turnaround time. Process mapping was used to study the system and identify potential sources of delays in the system. A set of qualitative recommendations were put forward. These recommendations, include the reduction of wait time of outpatients and inpatients and the reduction of non-value-added times such as transfer time of patients, were evaluated using a discrete event simulation approach. The simulation study shows that the daily operating hours at the catheterization lab could be reduced, aiding to reallocate staff for discharging other duties, as the hospital may require.  相似文献

Vacuum assisted resin infusion molding (VARIM) was used to produce multiscale fiber reinforced composites (M-FRCs) based on carbon nanofibers dispersed in an epoxy resin. Flexural, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and thermomechanical tests are presented for the 0.1 wt% and 1 wt% M-FRCs and compared with the neat fiber reinforced composites (FRCs). Flexural strength and modulus increased (16–20%) and (23–26%), respectively for the 0.1 wt% and 1 wt% M-FRCs when compared to the neat FRCs. ILSS properties increased (6% and 25%) for the 0.1 wt% and 1 wt% M-FRCs, respectively when compared to neat FRCs. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of both M-FRC samples were 25 °C higher than the neat FRC. Coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of the M-FRC samples improved compared to the neat FRC. The improved Tg and CTE properties in the M-FRC samples are attributed to synergistic interactions between the CNF/PNC matrix and glass fibers.  相似文献

A multistage field emitter based on graphene-linked ZnO nanowire array is realized by means of spin-coating a graphene dispersion (reduced graphene oxide) over a nanostructured platform followed by plasma modification. Spin-coating leads to interlinking of graphene sheets between the neighboring nanowires whereas plasma etching in the subsequent step generates numerous ultra-sharp graphene edges at the nanowire tips. The inherent tendency of graphene to lay flat over a plane substrate can easily be bypassed through the currently presented nanostructure platform based technique. The turn-on and threshold field significantly downshifted compared to the individual components in the cascade emitter. Through the facile electron transfer from nanowires to graphene due to band bending at the ZnO-graphene interface together with multistage geometrical field enhancement at both the nanowire and graphene edges remain behind this enriched field emission from the composite cold cathode. This strategy will open up a new direction to integrate the functionalities of both the graphene array and several other inorganic nanostructure array for practical electronic devices.  相似文献

Earlier, a preliminary study of the reliability characteristics of a fleet of load-haul-dump (LHD) machines deployed at Kiruna mine showed that the engine and the hydraulics are the two most critical subsystems. Hydraulic systems are selected for further study because such systems are still under a development phase. Maintenance data for two years for these machines are analyzed. The tests for trends and serial correlation showed that times between successive failures for the hydraulic systems are in most cases not independent and identically distributed. Goodness-of-fit tests showed that the power law process model provides a good fit to the failure data of the hydraulic systems. Methods for parameter estimation in the power law process model and estimation of optimal maintenance intervals for such systems are presented. Emphasis is on the use of graphical methods for data analysis.  相似文献
