Eye-tracking technology was used to examine Internet search result evaluation strategies adopted by sixth-grade students (N?=?36) during ten experimental information search tasks. The relevancy of the search result’s title, URL, and snippet components was manipulated and selection of search results as well as looking into probabilities on the search result components was analysed. The results revealed that during first-pass inspection, students read the search engine page by first looking at the title of a search result. If the title was relevant, the probability of looking at the snippet of the search result increased. During second-pass inspection, there was a high probability of students focusing on the most promising search result by inspecting all of its components before making their selection. A cluster analysis revealed three viewing strategies: half of the students looked mainly at the titles and snippets; one-third with high probability examined all components; and one-sixth mainly focused on titles, leading to more frequent errors in search result selection. The results indicate that students generally made a flexible use of both eliminative and confirmatory evaluation strategies when reading Internet search results, while some seemed to not pay attention to snippet and URL components of the search results.  相似文献

Several techniques have been established to quantify the mechanicals of single molecules. However, most of them show only limited capabilities of parallelizing the measurement by performing many individual measurements simultaneously. Herein, a microfluidics-based single-molecule force spectroscopy method, which achieves sub-nanometer spatial resolution and sub-piconewton sensitivity and is capable of simultaneously quantifying hundreds of single-molecule targets in parallel, is presented. It relies on a combination of total internal reflection microscopy and microfluidics, in which monodisperse fluorescent beads are immobilized on the bottom of a microfluidic channel by macromolecular linkers. Application of a flow generates a well-defined shear force acting on the beads, whereas the nanomechanical linker response is quantified based on the force-induced displacement of individual beads. To handle the high amount of data generated, a cluster analysis which is capable of a semi-automatic identification of measurement artifacts and molecular populations is implemented. The method is validated by probing the mechanical response polyethylene glycol linkers and binding strength of biotin–NeutrAvidin complexes. Two energy barriers (at 3 and 5.7 Å, respectively) in the biotin–NeutrAvidin interaction are resolved and the unfolding behavior of talin's rod domain R3 in the force range between 1 to ≈10 pN is probed.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Interview studies which employ qualitative methodology are often concerned with classifying behaviours or attitudes and an ideal sample of research subjects displays variety in the attitudes or behaviours under scrutiny. OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the development of a questionnaire which measures GPs' attitudes towards discussing smoking with patients with the intention of using this instrument to select GPs with diverse views for a qualitative interview study. METHOD: Thirteen attitude statements with an accompanying Likert-type scale were completed by 327 GPs in one FHSA area. Factor analysis of responses produced two subscales: 'perceived efficacy' and 'enthusiasm'. Reliability and validity of these were examined. RESULTS: Each subscale had good internal reliability and preliminary exploration of construct validity supported the notion that the subscales were valid. CONCLUSION: The use of this type of instrument in sampling GPs for qualitative studies could be effective for selecting subjects with a diversity of views towards the research topic.  相似文献

Dopaminergic agents and carbidopa/levodopa have become the preferred treatment for both the restless legs (RL) syndrome and for periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS). For once-nightly treatments with carbidopa/ levodopa, a problem with morning end-of-dose rebound increases in leg movements has been reported to occur in the about one-fourth of the patients. In our clinical studies a previously unreported but far more significant problem of markedly augmented RL symptoms occurred in the afternoon and the evening prior to taking the next nightly dose. A systematic prospective evaluation of this augmentation in 46 consecutive patients treated with carbidopa/ levodopa for RL syndrome or PLMS disorder found this augmentation to be the major adverse effect of treatment. Augmentation occurred for 31% of PLMS patients and 82% of all RL patients. It was greater for subjects with more severe RL symptoms and for patients on higher doses (> or = 50/200 mg carbidopa/levodopa) but was unrelated to gender, age or baseline severity of PLMS. This augmentation was severe enough to require medication change for 50% of the RL patients and 13% of PLMS patients. Augmentation resolved with cessation of the medication and could be minimized by keeping the dose low.  相似文献

The association between changes in physical activity, body weight, and diet and fasting plasma insulin was analyzed in a 2.5-year follow-up study of 146 men aged 50 to 60 years. Physical activity was assessed by a 7-day physical activity recall interview, diet by a 4-day food record, and plasma insulin radioimmunologically. Total physical activity decreased from (mean +/- SD) 45.1 +/- 10.1 to 39.0 +/- 6.1 metabolic equivalent (MET) hours (METh).d-1 and conditioning physical activity (> 5.0 METs) from 8.0 +/- 11.2 to 2.7 +/- 5.0 METh.d-1, whereas plasma insulin increased from 8.2 +/- 5.8 to 9.2 +/- 6.7 mU.L-1 and body weight from 80.5 +/- 12.0 to 81.6 +/- 11.6 kg during the follow-up period (P < or = .001 for all). The change in conditioning physical activity correlated inversely (r = -.34, P < .001) and change in body weight positively (r = .42,P < .001) with the change in plasma insulin level. With data adjusted for the baseline insulin level, cardiovascular health status, alcohol intake, change in body weight, smoking, age, and follow-up time, the odds ratio for an increase in fasting plasma insulin was 8.9 (95% CI, 2.1 to 37.1; P = .003) for men with the greatest decrease in conditioning physical activity (< -7 METh) compared with men who reported an increase in conditioning physical activity. The same logistic regression model showed an odds ratio of 9.9 (95% CI, 2.1 to 45.4; P = .003) for the increase in plasma insulin for subjects who gained more than 3.3 kg body weight compared with subjects who lost at least 0.6 kg. Men who consumed at least 12 g.d-1 alcohol at both examinations had an odds ratio of 12.8 (95% CI, 1.7 to 94.5; P = .012) compared with nondrinkers. These data suggest that in middle-aged men, a reduction in physical activity increases the risk for increased plasma insulin independently of alcohol intake and changes in body weight.  相似文献

Rh, Pt, and Pt-Rh catalysts on modified commercial zirconia support (m-ZrO2) were screened for the clean-up of gasification gas from tar, methane, and ammonia both in the absence and presence of H2S while varying the Rh metal content from 0.5 to 5 w-%. Our goal was to optimize the composition of the Rh/m-ZrO2 catalyst in view of the production of ultra clean gas applicable for liquid biofuels synthesis. In the presence of 100 ppm sulfur, increasing Rh concentration from 0.5 to 5 w-% did not greatly improve the activity of the catalyst. The bimetallic Pt/Rh/m-ZrO2 catalyst was also less active than the 0.5 w-% Rh/m-ZrO2 catalyst. Furthermore, the Rh/m-ZrO2 catalyst regained its performance at the set point of 800 °C when the sulfur feed was turned off even after exposures to 500-1000 ppm sulfur. Our data allow us to suggest that in the presence of sulfur, the active sites responsible for the reforming reactions are poisoned, but less impact occurs on sites responsible for oxidation reactions. Furthermore, the screening experiments allow to suggest that the Rh/m-ZrO2 catalyst could be applicable to hot gas cleaning in the presence of sulfur (> 50 ppm) at above 800 °C using a moderate gas hourly space velocity of approximately 3400 1/h. Since biomass gasification gas generally contains sulfur, the 0.5 w-% Rh/m-ZrO2 catalyst could be a promising option for gasification gas clean-up applications at temperatures above 800 °C where it reduces tar to very low levels.  相似文献
