In this Account, we explore the role constant curvature structures play in amphiphilic small molecule crystals and extended coordination solids. A constant curvature structure is one in which there is a surface or interface that has the same curvature throughout its surface. Simple examples of such structures contain spheres (micelles), columns, or layers. Yet another family are cubic as is found in the gyroid topology. For amphiphilic systems, there are two domains, one generally hydrophobic and the other hydrophilic. We find that the interfaces between these two domains in small molecule structures resemble those in larger scale systems and adopt topologies related to constant curvature structures. The hydrophobic-to-total volume ratio, a molecular parameter, can be used to predict which type of constant curvature structure is adopted. In the case of three coordinate extended solids, constant curvature plays a role both in the extended net topology and in the hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic interface. 相似文献

(1) Background: We previously demonstrated that disruption of IP6K1 improves metabolism, protecting mice from high-fat diet-induced obesity, insulin resistance, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and steatohepatitis. Age-induced metabolic dysfunction is a major risk factor for metabolic diseases. The involvement of IP6K1 in this process is unknown. (2) Methods: Here, we compared body and fat mass, insulin sensitivity, energy expenditure and serum-, adipose tissue- and liver-metabolic parameters of chow-fed, aged, wild type (aWT) and whole body Ip6k1 knockout (aKO) mice. (3) Results: IP6K1 was upregulated in the adipose tissue and liver of aWT mice compared to young WT mice. Moreover, Ip6k1 deletion blocked age-induced increase in body- and fat-weight and insulin resistance in mice. aKO mice oxidized carbohydrates more efficiently. The knockouts displayed reduced levels of serum insulin, triglycerides, and non-esterified fatty acids. Ip6k1 deletion partly protected age-induced decline of the thermogenic uncoupling protein UCP1 in inguinal white adipose tissue. Targets inhibited by IP6K1 activity such as the insulin sensitivity- and energy expenditure-inducing protein kinases, protein kinase B (PKB/Akt) and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), were activated in the adipose tissue and liver of aKO mice. (4) Conclusions: Ip6k1 deletion maintains healthy metabolism in aging and thus, targeting this kinase may delay the development of age-induced metabolic dysfunction. 相似文献

Drug delivery to a target without adverse effects is one of the major criteria for clinical use. Herein, we have made an attempt to explore the delivery efficacy of SDS surfactant in a monomer and micellar stage during the delivery of the model drug, Toluidine Blue (TB) from the micellar cavity to DNA. Molecular recognition of pre-micellar SDS encapsulated TB with DNA occurs at a rate constant of k1 ∼652 s−1. However, no significant release of encapsulated TB at micellar concentration was observed within the experimental time frame. This originated from the higher binding affinity of TB towards the nano-cavity of SDS at micellar concentration which does not allow the delivery of TB from the nano-cavity of SDS micelles to DNA. Thus, molecular recognition controls the extent of DNA recognition by TB which in turn modulates the rate of delivery of TB from SDS in a concentration-dependent manner. 相似文献

The ability of silica (SiO2) in controlling the densification and grain growth behavior of nano crystalline zinc oxide (ZnO) has been systematically studied. It has been observed that SiO2 acts as a sintering inhibitor in the ZnO–SiO2 system up to 4 wt.% limiting value beyond which densification behavior of the system remains almost unchanged, especially above 1100 °C. The addition of SiO2 to ZnO retards grain growth which in turn results a finer ultimate grain size as compared to the undoped ZnO. However, stabilization in grain size occurs at ≥4 wt.% SiO2 addition. It has been observed that SiO2 incorporation changes the grain growth mechanism up to 4 wt.% addition, beyond which no remarkable changes was noticed. The grain growth (n) shows distinctly different slopes as a function of sintering time for the SiO2 doped ZnO systems than undoped ZnO. The different slopes tend to indicate that different diffusion mechanisms and probably the formation of a secondary phase (Zn–Si–O) at the grain boundary control the densification and grain growth. The thermal expansion coefficient of the system has been found to decrease substantially beyond 4 wt.% SiO2 addition to ZnO. 相似文献

Polycrystalline undoped and indium-doped CdS0.2Se0.8 thin films were deposited on FTO-coated glass substrates by spray pyrolysis. The cell configurations CdS0.2Se0.8/1 M (Na2S + S + NaOH)/C and In:CdS0.2Se0.8/1 M (Na2S + S + NaOH)/C were used to study a wide range of photoelectrochemical characteristics including capacitance–voltage in the dark, current–voltage characteristics in the dark and under illumination, photovoltaic power output and spectral response and to perform electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies. The study reveals that the films exhibit n-type conductivity. Various PEC parameters such as the junction ideality factor under illumination, series and shunt resistances, fill factor and efficiency have been estimated for the PEC cells formed with CdS0.2Se0.8 and indium-doped CdS0.2Se0.8 thin films. The efficiency and fill factor of these PEC cells are found to be improved from 0.79% and 0.46 to 2.12% and 0.49, respectively, with indium doping in CdS0.2Se0.8 thin films. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies show that doping of indium into CdS0.2Se0.8 thin film improves the performance of resulting PEC cells. 相似文献

The microstructures of fine-grained β-SiC materials with α-SiC seeds annealed either with or without uniaxial pressure at 1900°C for 4 h in an argon atmosphere were investigated using analytical electron microscopy and high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM). An applied annealing pressure can greatly retard phase transformation and grain growth. The material annealed with pressure consisted of fine grains with β-SiC as a major phase. In contrast, the microstructure in the material annealed without pressure consisted of elongated grains with half α-SiC. Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis showed no differences in the amount of segregation of aluminum and oxygen atoms at grain boundaries, but did show a significant difference in the segregation of yttrium atoms at grain boundaries along SiC grains for the two materials. The increased segregation of yttrium ions at grain boundaries caused by the applied pressure might be the reason for the retarded phase transformation and grain growth. HREM showed a thin secondary phase of 1 nm at the grain boundary interface for both materials. The development of a composite grain consisting of a mixture of β/α polytypes during annealing was a feature common to both materials. The possible mechanisms for grain growth and phase transformation are discussed. 相似文献

Nanocomposites are a new class of polymeric materials which include organic or inorganic nano‐phase materials. These nanocomposite films can show interesting properties which have many applications for wavelength conversion and energy saving. In this paper, we present polyolefin based nanocomposite films prepared using wavelength‐converting red ‘phosphors’ such as Y2O3: Eu3+ and LiAl5O8:Fe3+ and blue ‘phosphor’ CaMgSi2O6: Eu2+. The durability of the polymer chain is unaffected by incorporation of inorganic nanoparticles as there is no direct interaction between them. The addition of surfactant in the nanocomposite film helps to improve the dispersion ability of the nanoparticles and increase the flexibility of the polymer film. Wavelength‐converting ‘nanophosphors’ incorporated in a polymer matrix help to increase the tensile strength of the film. The films show excellent wavelength conversion ability of UV light into the visible and near IR range. These nanocomposite films have great application in energy saving devices. Reactivity of different medium-chain substrates, i.e., n-octanol, caprylic acid, and its alkyl (methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, and n-butyl) esters, was assessed in the interesterification of tripalmitin catalyzed by papaya (Carica papaya) lipase. Alcoholysis with n-octanol was the fastest reaction leading to the highest conversion of tripalmitin to n-octyl palmitate and concomitant formation of di- as well as monopalmitoylglycerols. This was followed by transesterification
of tripalmitin with n-butyl and n-propyl caprylates, which in turn were faster than transesterification with ethyl and methyl caprylates, yielding in each
case the corresponding alkyl palmitates and triacylglycerols containing palmitoyl and capryloyl moieties as the major reaction
products. Acidolysis of tripalmitin with caprylic acid yielded palmitic acid and triacylglycerols containing palmitoyl and
capryloyl moieties as the major reaction products, however, with the lowest conversion among the three interesterification
