Experimental analysis of lightning overvoltages induced on low-voltage distribution lines

Problems have often been caused in low-voltage distribution lines such as single-phase 100/200 V and three-phase 200-V systems. For instance, the burning of low-voltage devices and the unnecessary operation of ground fault interrupters have occurred, which are caused possibly by lightning overvoltages. Experimental analysis was performed on the generation modes of lightning overvoltages on low-voltage distribution lines. A scale model line, one-fourth the size of an actual power distribution line of Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), was installed for experimental analysis on the lightning protection of an overhead ground wire, an overhead common grounding wire (system neutral conductor), surge arresters and pole transformers against the overvoltages induced on low-voltage distribution lines due to a nearby lightning stroke. A balloon was flown at a location 30 km away from the scale model line in a normal direction to it. A 200-m long wire is suspended from the balloon to simulate a lightning path. Pulse current is applied to the simulated path using a pulse generator and the voltages induced on the line conductors are measured. This paper analyzes those overvoltages by means of the experimental and the theoretical methods.     

Mathematical analysis of the pressure distribution in powder in equilibrium in a conical vessel

A mathematical analysis of the distribution of pressure (vertical stress) in powder mass filled in a conical vessel is presented, taking into account the variation of pressure with the distance from the axis of the cone. The free surface of the powder mass is assumed to be heaped. It is assumed that vertical stress and horizontal stress are interrelated by Rankine's law. From the equilibrium condition of powder mass a fundamental equation has been derived to determine the pressure as a function of both the depth and the distance from the axis of the cone. A solution satisfying the boundary condition at the free surface has been obtained. It is shown that the analysis fits the experimental curves of the distribution of vertical stress     

A CAD system for building structures in ‘BUILDING RC/SRC/S’

A CAD software system is described for the structural design of buildings. While generally similar to GENESYS-RC-BUILDING/1 of England and DEMOS-E of Japan, this system allows for greater freedom of design than the above two systems. As the system is intended for the design of buildings in Japan, a country prone to strong earthquakes, special care is paid to ensure aseismic designs. The system is designed to comply with the basic requirements of the Japanese building codes and structural standards and can be applied to the structural design of reinforced concrete, steel-reinforced concrete and steel structures.     

Reversible change in the optical rotatory power of poly(L-glutamate) thin film induced by photochromism of a spiropyran

Summary When the thin film of poly(L-glutamate) containing 6-nitroindolinospiropyran was exposed to uv light(mainly 365nm), measurable change in the optical rotatory power was observed, accompanied with the coloration due to the formation of the photo-merocyanine. The change was reversible upon exposure to visible light(>480nm). The extent of the reversible change of the optical rotatory power was found to depend on the concentration of the spiropyran as well as casting concentration. Discussion was made on the mechanism of the appearance of the optical rotatory power.     

One-way simple multihead finite automata

The first half of this paper investigates the accepting powers of various types of simple one-way multihead finite automata. It is shown that(1)for each k?1, simple one-way (k+1)-head finite automata are more powerful than simple one-way k-head finite automata.(2)for each k?2, nondeterministic simple one-way k-head finite automata are more powerful than deterministic ones, and(3)for each k?2, sensing simple one-way k-head finite automata are more powerful than non-sensing ones.In the latter half, closure properties for various types of simple one-way multihead finite automata are investigated.Finally, we demonstrate that languages accepted by nondeterministic sensing simple one-way 2-head finite automata are related to some open problem concerning deterministic and nondeterministic tape-bounded Turing computations.     

Conductance stopped-flow study of cationic polymerizations of p-methoxystyrene and styrene

Summary Conductance stopped-flow analysis on the initial phase of cationic polymerizations of p-methoxystyrene and styrene revealed rapid changes in conductance (within 20–50 ms) that were related to the initiation process. Initiation rate constants were obtained for CF₃SO₃H, CH₃COClO₄, and BF₃O (C₂H₅)₂ initiators in 1,2-dichloroethane at 30°C. They agreed closely with those determined by stopped-flow spectroscopy, and decreased with increasing monomer concentration.     

First-order phase transition with a moving boundary. II. Theory of ice formation

An exact solution of the parabolic partial differential equation with a moving boundary condition is found. Applications to the problem of ice formation are discussed.
