In studies of episodic recognition memory, low-frequency words (LF) have higher hit rates (HR) and lower false alarm rates (FAR) than do high-frequency words (HF), which is known as the mirror pattern. A few findings have suggested that requiring a task at study may reduce or eliminate the LF-HR advantage without altering the LF-FAR effect. Other studies have suggested that the size of the LF-HR advantage interacts with study time. To explore such findings more thoroughly and relate them to theory, the authors conducted 5 experiments, varying study time and study task. The full mirror pattern was found only in 2 cases: the standard condition requiring study for a later memory test and a condition requiring a judgment about unusual letters. The authors explain their findings in terms of the encoding of distinctive features and discuss the implications for current theories of recognition memory and the word frequency effect. Problem, research strategy, and findings: Local governments across the United States have for decades relied on the autocentric level of service (LOS) metric to analyze and impose exactions for the transportation impacts of land use developments. In California, LOS has dominated transportation impact analysis under the state’s project-level environmental review law. In that role, LOS has exacerbated the state’s notoriously tortuous development approval processes, particularly in urban areas. But LOS is on its way out. The state recently replaced LOS with vehicle miles traveled (VMT) as the primary measure—and basis for mitigation—of transportation impacts under the California Environmental Quality Act. Local governments must make the switch by July 1, 2020. We use a historical counterfactual approach to assess how replacing LOS with VMT could have affected the approval process for 153 land development projects over 16?years in the city of Los Angeles. We find that most projects could have benefited from at least some environmental review streamlining under the VMT-based framework recommended by the state, including more than 75% of residential-containing projects.
Takeaway for practice: Our results suggest that swapping LOS for VMT could reduce the environmental review burden for development in low-VMT urban areas and provide at least some of the approval process streamlining necessary to increase housing production in California. Similar impacts from an LOS-to-VMT switch could also potentially accrue outside of California under the right conditions, but more research is needed. 相似文献

Open-cathode air-breathing fuel cells have the advantage of reduced system complexity and simplified operation, as oxygen is taken directly from ambient air without the need for blowers/compressors. In this study, printed circuit boards (PCBs) are used as flow-field plates. The use of PCBs offers the potential for significant cost reduction due to their well-established manufacturing processing and low materials cost. This study investigates the effect of varying the cathode geometry (parallel and circular) and opening ratios (43%, 53% and 63%) on fuel cell performance using polarisation curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and thermal imaging. The results obtained indicate that circular openings afford lower Ohmic resistance than parallel flow-field designs, which helps improve contact between the gas diffusion layer and flow-field plate. However, flow-field plates with circular openings suffer from greater mass transport limitation effects. Likewise, greater opening ratios offer better mass transport but increased Ohmic resistance as a result of the reduced area of lands/ribs. The thermal imaging results reveal lower temperature in the middle of the fuel cell due to “bowing” of the printed circuit board flow field plates which reduces the local current density. A trade-off between these factors results in a design with a maximum area specific power density of 250 mW cm−2. 相似文献

Multi-level skybridges and atria between tall buildings make possible a new urban paradigm that has the potential to dramatically reduce resource consumption, air pollution, and traffic accidents. Structural analysis and optimization methods and results are presented for tall buildings connected with roller or hinge-skybridges at multiple levels and atria between buildings. Generic building systems were studied with controlled factors such as number of buildings, equal-height vs. variable-height, skybridge connection type, site seismicity and wind intensity, and presence/absence of skybridges and atria. The 48 optimization problems held all other factors constant such as building width, shape, configuration, and spacing. A simplified lateral load analysis model is described which makes optimization of large systems possible. The simplified lateral load analysis model was compared to a finite element model for accuracy. An optimization strategy was developed involving gradient and evolutionary algorithms. Results show that atria and hinge-connected skybridges reduced the total structural volume by as much as 10 %. 相似文献

Light absorption by carotenoids is known to vary substantially with the shape or conformation of the pigment molecule induced by the molecular environment, but the role of interactions between carotenoid pigments and the proteins to which they are bound, and the resulting impact on organismal coloration, remain unclear. Here, we present a spectroscopic investigation of feathers from the brilliant red scarlet ibis (Eudocimus ruber, Threskiornithidae), the orange-red summer tanager (Piranga rubra, Cardinalidae) and the violet-purple feathers of the white-browed purpletuft (Iodopleura isabellae, Tityridae). Despite their striking differences in colour, all three of these feathers contain canthaxanthin (β,β-carotene-4,4′-dione) as their primary pigment. Reflectance and resonance Raman (rR) spectroscopy were used to investigate the induced molecular structural changes and carotenoid–protein interactions responsible for the different coloration in these plumage samples. The results demonstrate a significant variation between species in the peak frequency of the strong ethylenic vibration (ν1) peak in the rR spectra, the most significant of which is found in I. isabellae feathers and is correlated with a red-shift in canthaxanthin absorption that results in violet reflectance. Neither polarizability of the protein environment nor planarization of the molecule upon binding can entirely account for the full extent of the colour shift. Therefore, we suggest that head-to-tail molecular alignment (i.e. J-aggregation) of the protein-bound carotenoid molecules is an additional factor. 相似文献

A laser ablation system has been constructed and used to determine the damage threshold of stainless steel, rhodium and single-, poly- and nanocrystalline molybdenum in vacuum, at a number of wavelengths between 220 nm and 1064 nm using 5 ns pulses. All materials show an increase of the damage threshold with decreasing wavelength below 400 nm. Tests in a nitrogen atmosphere showed a decrease of the damage threshold by a factor of 2–3. Cleaning tests have been performed in vacuum on stainless steel samples after applying mixed Al/W/C/D coatings using magnetron sputtering. In situ XPS analysis during the cleaning process as well ex situ reflectivity measurements demonstrate near complete removal of the coating and a substantial recovery of the reflectivity. The first results also show that the reflectivity obtained through cleaning at 532 nm may be further increased by additional exposure to UV light, in this case 230 nm, an effect which is attributed to the removal of tungsten dust from the surface. 相似文献

The computer graphic simulation of a common spray painting artifact, called orange peel, is discussed. Orange peel distorts
surface reflections and is commonplace in product design applications. The orange peel measurements from a standard industrial
instrument are used to construct a height field, and this surface is rendered using traditional normal mapping techniques.
Comparisons are made between real panels with orange peel and simulations of those panels. A simple visual model for detecting
the presence of orange peel is also presented and evaluated. User testing of the model confirms that orange peel is more visible
on dark paint colors than on light paint colors. The latter outcome suggests that to minimize application time, but still
keep orange peel below visual threshold, paint application systems should be designed to take paint color into account. 相似文献

We present a model for anchoring categorical conceptual information which originates from physical perception and the web. The model is an extension of the anchoring framework which is used to create and maintain over time semantically grounded sensor information. Using the augmented anchoring framework that employs complex symbolic knowledge from a commonsense knowledge base, we attempt to ground and integrate symbolic and perceptual data that are available on the web. We introduce conceptual anchors which are representations of general, concrete conceptual terms. We show in an example scenario how conceptual anchors can be coherently integrated with perceptual anchors and commonsense information for the acquisition of novel concepts. 相似文献
