Impacts of climate change on hydrology and water quality: Future proofing management strategies in the Lake Simcoe watershed,Canada

The impacts of climate change on hydrology and water quality of the Black River, a tributary of Lake Simcoe, Canada, were assessed for the period 2001–2100, by integrating two models, HBV and INCA-P, and using statistically downscaled data from the Global Circulation Model CGCM3 for two IPCC scenarios (A1b and A2). The effectiveness of catchment management strategies was assessed across the 21st century by simulating controls on sewage treatment works and fertiliser applications, and implementing buffer strips and bank erosion controls.     

Proteomics of Mouse Heart Ventricles Reveals Mitochondria and Metabolism as Major Targets of a Post-Infarction Short-Acting GLP1Ra-Therapy

Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death worldwide, making it crucial to search for new therapies to mitigate major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) after a cardiac ischemic episode. Drugs in the class of the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1Ra) have demonstrated benefits for heart function and reduced the incidence of MACE in patients with diabetes. Previously, we demonstrated that a short-acting GLP1Ra known as DMB (2-quinoxalinamine, 6,7-dichloro-N-[1,1-dimethylethyl]-3-[methylsulfonyl]-,6,7-dichloro-2-methylsulfonyl-3-N-tert-butylaminoquinoxaline or compound 2, Sigma) also mitigates adverse postinfarction left ventricular remodeling and cardiac dysfunction in lean mice through activation of parkin-mediated mitophagy following infarction. Here, we combined proteomics with in silico analysis to characterize the range of effects of DMB in vivo throughout the course of early postinfarction remodeling. We demonstrate that the mitochondrion is a key target of DMB and mitochondrial respiration, oxidative phosphorylation and metabolic processes such as glycolysis and fatty acid beta-oxidation are the main biological processes being regulated by this compound in the heart. Moreover, the overexpression of proteins with hub properties identified by protein–protein interaction networks, such as Atp2a2, may also be important to the mechanism of action of DMB. Prediction of attendant tenure.

MMPI L, K, Pd, and Ma subscales were administered to 109 persons who were subsequently hired for the position of cottage attendant in an insttution for the mentally retarded. 3 subscales and a composite score from all 4 of them distinguished significantly between attendants who were fired during the first 6 months of employment and attendants who were retained in employment and did not receive unfavorable evaluations from their immediate supervisors. 1.3 ?m/1.5 ?m bidirectional WDM optical-fibre transmission system experiment at 144 Mbit/s

Results are reported of a 1.3 ?m/1.5 ?m bidirectional WDM transmission system experiment operating at 144 Mbit/s over 58 km of cabled single-mode fibre. Regenerators used Bell Laboratories-developed 1.3 and 1.5 ?m InGaAsP semiconductor lasers, InGaAs PIN diodes, microwave monolithic amplifiers and optical bidirectional couplers.     

Sex effects in evaluating leaders.

Investigated the extent to which sex role stereotypes influence the evaluation of leadership behavior. 225 male and 57 female business students were administered 1 of 2 versions of a questionnaire containing 4 stories, each depicting a leadership style based on 1 of the following leadership dimensions: initiating structure, consideration, production emphasis, and tolerance for freedom. Managers' names were altered in the 2 versions to indicate males or females. Answers to 8 evaluative questions for each of the leadership styles confirm the hypothesis that sex has an effect on evaluations of managerial behavior, although the effect varied for different leadership styles. Female managers received more positive scores than male managers on the consideration style. Initiating structure behavior was valued more highly when engaged in by male managers. Manager sex had no significant influence on evaluations of the production emphasis and tolerance for freedom styles. Sex of S effects also were noted on all but the consideration style. Cathodic reductions of cyanopyridines in liquid ammonia

The electrochemical behaviours of the three isomeric cyanopyridines have been studied in liquid ammonia by cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential coulometry. Reaction mechanisms are proposed on the basis of the observed electrochemical behaviour of products and the mass spectra of products produced by the alkylation of the electrogenerated organic anions. The kinetics of charge transfer reactions have been examined by interfacial impedance measurements and the rate of dimerisation of the radical anions of 3-cyanopyridine evaluated.     

Diene-to-saturate shunt in fat hydrogenation

In matching experimental data to kinetic models for hydrogenation of methylcis-9,cis-15-linoleate, ethylene glycol diundecylenate and 1,7-octadiene with platinum or palladium catalysts, only if a diene-to-saturate shunt of 15- to 25% is included can a good fit be secured between the model and experimental composition. With nickel the shunt is much smaller or absent. Although the shunt might be attributed most readily to a liquid diffusion effect, its independence of temperature, viscosity and presence or absence of solvents and catalyst support suggests that some other factor is responsible.
