PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of masking on the inter-observer variation in image quality evaluation of clinical radiographs of chest and lumbar spine. BACKGROUND: Inter-observer variation is a big problem in image quality evaluation since this variation is often much bigger than the variation in image quality between, for example, two radiographic systems. In this study, we have evaluated the effect of masking on the inter-observer variation. The idea of the masking was to force every observer to view exactly the same part of the image and to avoid the effect of the overall 'first impression' of the image. A discussion with a group of European expert radiologists before the study indicated that masking might be a good way to reduce the inter-observer variation. METHODS: Five chest and five lumbar spine radiographs were collected together with detailed information regarding exposure conditions. The radiographs were digitised with a high-performance scanner and five different manipulations were performed, simulating five different exposure conditions. The contrast, noise and spatial resolution were manipulated by this method. The images were printed onto the film and the individual masks were produced for each film, showing only the parts of the images that were necessary for the image quality evaluation. The quality of the images was evaluated on ordinary viewing boxes by a large group of experienced radiologists. The images were examined with and without the masks with a set of image criteria (if fulfilled, 1 point; and not fulfilled, 0 point), and the mean score was calculated for each simulated exposure condition. RESULTS: The results of this study indicate that-contrary to what was supposed-the inter-observer variation increased when the images were masked. In some cases, especially for chest, this increase was statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of this study, image masking in studies of fulfilment of image criteria cannot be recommended.  相似文献

The major class of mycotoxins produced by Fusarium moulds are trichothecenes, a large group of sesquiterpenes sharing the same basic chemical structure, a 12,13-epoxytrichothec-9-ene ring system. Their toxic effects range from causing diarrhoea, vomiting and gastro-intestinal inflammation to noncompetitive inhibition of the biosynthesis of proteins in eukaryotic cells. Trichothecenes in general are relatively stable compounds, their degradation is observed only at high temperatures and prolonged heating time. In order to investigate the stability of the trichothecene nivalenol (NIV) under food processing conditions such as cooking or baking, we performed model heating experiments and screened the residue for degradation products using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Heating of nivalenol, especially under mild alkaline conditions, gave a mixture of four compounds (norNIV A, norNIV B, norNIV C, and NIV lactone), which where isolated and identified by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and MS experiments. Although their formation was also demonstrated in heating experiments with spiked flour samples, only norNIV B was detectable in a screening of several commercially available samples, possibly due to the very low contamination with nivalenol. Furthermore, cell culture experiments using immortalized human kidney epithelial (IHKE) cells showed that the four compounds are less cytotoxic (formazan dye cytotoxicity assay) compared to nivalenol. Whereas nivalenol revealed an EC50 at 0.9 micromol, all other compounds did not show any significant effect up to 100 micromol.  相似文献

The survival of two bacteria, Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes was observed on pine heartwood and glass surfaces by using a simple test method. The development of the number of bacterial cells was evaluated by titration after vortexing the samples in BHI broth and culturing the resulting broth on agar plates. The bacterial count decreased clearly faster on pine heartwood than on glass surfaces. This result was confirmed by studying the wooden samples also one day after to exclude possible adherence of the bacterial cells on the porous surface. This study confirms the results of several other studies that suggest wood to have antibacterial properties.  相似文献

Vitamin A (VA) and its derivatives, the retinoids, are important factors for the development of the immune system. It has been shown in adult animals that proliferation of lymphocyte populations and antibody secretion are retinoid dependent, while little is known about the effects of retinoids during postnatal development. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of VA on allergic sensitisation during lactation and after weaning using an in vivo system for postnatal allergic sensitisation in mice. Different VA diets (basal/VA elimination/VA (as retinyl palmitate) supplemented) were fed to the dams throughout lactation and directly to the pups after weaning. Allergic sensitisation was induced with a single peritoneal ovalbumin (OVA) injection at day 28 after weaning. The phenotype of lymphocytes was analysed by flow cytometry and functional data were obtained by analysis of (IL-4/IFN-gamma) cytokine production and antibody production (OVA-specific IgG1 and IgE) in the offspring. VA/retinyl palmitate supplementation during lactation and after weaning decreased CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ and B220+ populations in splenic lymphocytes but also significantly enhanced IL-4 production and OVA-specific IgE after sensitisation. In contrast, mice fed VA-elimination diet displayed no significant alteration of lymphocyte numbers and a slightly increased IL-4 production. Our results showed that a single allergen injection during postnatal development induces allergic sensitisation whose degree is modified by the VA content of the maternal diet during lactation and the diet of the pups after weaning, indicating an important role of VA on the severity of the allergic sensitisation.  相似文献

A simplified method is presented for determining epoxidized soy bean oil (ESBO) in food or food simulants, such as olive oil. ESBO is transesterified with methoxide/methanol directly in the homogenated food, i.e. without prior extraction, and analyzed on a cyanopropyl or phenyl polysiloxane stationary phase without formation of dioxolanes. For most foods, flame ionization detection (FID) was appropriate, but for samples with interfering components, GC–MS was needed. Chemical ionization (CI) with ammonia is more sensitive and more selective than electron impact ionization (EI). In CI, positive and negative ion monitoring (PCI and NCI) are similar in sensitivity, but different in selectivity, i.e. the combination of the two is well suited for confirmation. Results are shown to be in agreement with on-line LC–GC–FID.  相似文献

Urbanisation in Tanzania is proceeding apace. This article seeks to identify the challenge posed by rapid urbanisation for food security in Tanzania to 2030, the Sustainable Development Goals horizon. It is hypothesized that urban food security largely depends on the food supply systems and the rural food production potential. The analysis of these interlinkages is based on secondary macro data and own primary micro data. Tanzania has done well to achieve broad self-sufficiency in basic foodstuffs to date, but rapid urbanisation will pose a severe future challenge as regards food security, particularly for the disadvantaged poorer people of the towns and cities in terms of food affordability, stability and food safety. Whether Tanzania can avoid future deterioration in urban food security will depend on how responsive and resilient the urban food supply systems prove to be in the face of continuing urban growth, changing consumption patterns, weak rural–urban food supply linkages and production constraints in the smallholder farming sector.  相似文献
