The risk of hydrogen embrittlement in high-strength prestressing steels under cathodic protection

High strength prestressing steels in prestressed concrete structures are protected against corrosion due to passivation resulting from the high alkalinity of the concrete. If depassivation of the prestressing steel occurs due to the ingress of chlorides the corrosion risk can be minimized by application of cathodic protection with impressed current. The risk of hydrogen embrittlement of the prestressing steel is especially pronounced if overprotection is applied due to hydrogen evolution in the cathodic reaction. The present work considers this risk by hydrogen activity measurements under practical conditions and application of different levels of cathodic protection potentials. Information on threshold potentials in prestressed concrete structures is provided, too.     

Modeling and animation of facial expressions based on B-Splines

This paper describes a technique for the automatic adaptation of a canonical facial model to data obtained by a 3D laser scanner. The facial model is a B-spline surface with 13×16 control points. We introduce a technique by which this canonical model is fit to the scanned data and that takes into consideration the requirements for the animation of facial expressions. The animation of facial expressions is based on the facial action coding system (FACS). Using B-splines in combination with FACS, we automatically create the impression of a moving skin. To increase the realism of the animation we map textural information onto the B-spline surface.     

Relationship between age and risk taking among managers.

Administered a short version of N. Kogan and M. Wallach's (see pa, vol. 39:6826) choice-dilemma test to 1,484 managers from over 200 companies. Results show a significant negative relationship between age and both risk taking and the value placed upon risk. The relationships were small in size when individual scores were correlated with age, but increased markedly when mean scores were used. Furthermore, the relationships were relatively stable across items and across companies. Developmental and sociocultural mechanisms that might underlie these findings are discussed. L x-ray satellite energies

Theoretical energies are tabulated for the L x-ray satellites that arise from electric dipole and quadrupole transitions in the presence of one spectator hole in the M- or N-shell. Results are listed for 11 elements with atomic numbers 65 ≤ Z ≤ 95. The computations are relativistic and include quantum-electrodynamic corrections. Subsidiary tables list the Coulomb and Breit interaction energies for double-hole states and the relative x-ray intensities of double-hole multiplet states.
