The number of individuals with age-related cognitive impairment is rising dramatically in the UK and globally. There is considerable interest in the general hypothesis that improving the diet of older people may slow the progression of cognitive decline. To date, there has been little attention given to the possible protective role of n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LCPs) most commonly found in oily fish, in age-related loss of cognitive function. The main research hypothesis of this study is that an increased dietary intake of n-3 LCPs will have a positive effect on cognitive performance in older people in the UK. To test this hypothesis, a double-blind randomised placebo-controlled trial will be carried out among adults aged 70–79 years in which the intervention arm will receive daily capsules containing n-3 LCP (0.5 g/day docosahexaenoic acid and 0.2 g/day eicosapentaenoic acid) while the placebo arm will receive daily capsules containing olive oil. The main outcome variable assessed at 24 months will be cognitive performance and a second major outcome variable will be retinal function. Retinal function tests are included as the retina is a specifically differentiated neural tissue and therefore represents an accessible window into the functioning of the brain. The overall purpose of this public-health research is to help define a simple and effective dietary intervention aimed at maintaining cognitive and retinal function in later life. This will be the first trial of its kind aiming to slow the decline of cognitive and retinal function in older people by increasing daily dietary intake of n-3 LCPs. The link between cognitive ability, visual function and quality of life among older people suggests that this novel line of research may have considerable public health importance.  相似文献

This paper is limited primarily to reverse osmosis which is the dominating membrane process in commercial plants. Desalination of brackish water and seawater with reverse osmosis, with special emphasis on costs and energy consumption, is the primary subject discussed in the paper. Some aspects of and development trends in industrial and domestic applications of membrane processes are also taken up, particularly with regard to by-product recovery and water reuse in connection with advanced wastewater treatment.The first RO plant to be brought into operation in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is located at Salbukh. The investment and total operation costs for this plant have been calculated in the paper. The water cost is at least twice as high as in a continental U.S. location. The main reason for this is the very high cost of civil and local works in Saudi Arabia. A similar calculation has been made for RO seawater desalination.Increased energy costs during the last decade have directed research and development work for all desalination methods towards reducing energy consumption. It is shown in the paper that energy recovery in connection with RO seawater desalination is particularly feasible. Different methods for energy recovery have been investigated and reported, the preferred methods depending on the size of the RO plant. A large underground RO plant for energy recovery, based on utilization of the static pressure instead of high pressure pumps, has also been studied.Another possible energy-saving, but also water quality improving method has been proposed, viz . a combined MSF-RO dual purpose plant. Excess power for reverse osmosis seems to be more and more available in Saudi Arabia due to the high power/water ratio in MSF dual purpose plants compared to the real demand for power and water.  相似文献

A two-color pyrometric technique was developed for the in situ simultaneous measurement of individual fuel-particle temperatures and sizes in a pressurized entrained flow reactor (PEFR). A method that requires only a single optical port was developed, and a specially designed optical probe was manufactured for the measurements at the PEFR. The fuel-particle temperature was obtained by applying two-color pyrometry. The particle size was determined from the same pyrometric signals. A discrimination method was developed to confirm that the detected particle was valid for particle sizing. Several series of measurements were made at a PEFR at different process conditions, and some typical results are shown.  相似文献

Adhesion molecules such as intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of various inflammatory liver disease states, including viral and autoimmune hepatitis as well as liver allograft rejection. Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) is an inflammatory cytokine known to up-regulate adhesion molecules as well as major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I expression, and has been demonstrated to be important in the rejection of vascularized organ allografts. The current studies address the effect of TNF-alpha and the role of ICAM-1 expression on liver cell immunogenicity in vitro in mixed lymphocyte hepatocyte culture (MLHC), in vitro in mixed lymphocyte liver nonparenchymal cell culture (MLNPC), in vivo in hepatocyte sponge matrix allografts (HC-SMA), and in vivo in liver nonparenchymal cell sponge matrix allografts (NPC-SMA). Purified allogeneic hepatocytes (HC) and liver nonparenchymal cells (NPC) under naive, unstimulated conditions demonstrated different profiles of MHC antigen and adhesion molecule expression, but both liver cell populations stimulated the proliferation and development of allospecific cytotoxic effectors in vitro and in vivo. Despite significant up-regulation of MHC class I and ICAM-1 on both HC and liver NPCs by in vivo treatment with TNF-alpha, the immunogenicity of TNF-alpha-stimulated liver cells was not appreciably different from naive, unstimulated liver cells. In contrast, ICAM-1-negative HC and NPCs were significantly less immunogenic both in terms of lymphocyte proliferative responses and the generation of allospecific cytolytic effectors. These results suggest that constitutive expression of ICAM-1 enhances the immunogenicity of "donor" liver cells but is not absolutely required to elicit immune responses to allogeneic liver cells. Further studies to determine the role of adhesion molecule expression on trafficking of host immune cells to the liver and the role of adhesion molecule expression by host cells are required to clarify their role in immune responses to liver cells.  相似文献

Robust Object Detection with Interleaved Categorization and Segmentation   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
This paper presents a novel method for detecting and localizing objects of a visual category in cluttered real-world scenes. Our approach considers object categorization and figure-ground segmentation as two interleaved processes that closely collaborate towards a common goal. As shown in our work, the tight coupling between those two processes allows them to benefit from each other and improve the combined performance. The core part of our approach is a highly flexible learned representation for object shape that can combine the information observed on different training examples in a probabilistic extension of the Generalized Hough Transform. The resulting approach can detect categorical objects in novel images and automatically infer a probabilistic segmentation from the recognition result. This segmentation is then in turn used to again improve recognition by allowing the system to focus its efforts on object pixels and to discard misleading influences from the background. Moreover, the information from where in the image a hypothesis draws its support is employed in an MDL based hypothesis verification stage to resolve ambiguities between overlapping hypotheses and factor out the effects of partial occlusion. An extensive evaluation on several large data sets shows that the proposed system is applicable to a range of different object categories, including both rigid and articulated objects. In addition, its flexible representation allows it to achieve competitive object detection performance already from training sets that are between one and two orders of magnitude smaller than those used in comparable systems.  相似文献

We developed and applied a computational model for simulating unsteady flow in a drainage network of a boreal forested peatland site. The input to the model was the hourly runoff produced by a hydrological model. The simulations of the flow in the ditch network were performed using an iterative procedure for solving the Saint-Venant equations that govern the flow in each of the network channels. These equations were solved separately for each ditch branch, and the flow depths at the junctions were corrected using the method of characteristics. The model was applied to the drainage network of a peatland catchment in Eastern Finland over a period of 15 months. Because flow resistance in the ditches depended strongly on flow conditions, flow resistance (Manning’s n) was introduced as a function of discharge. The model was calibrated and validated against field data and the simulation results were further applied to assess erosion risk. The highest risk of erosion occurred during long lasting flows induced by snowmelt at ditch sections with a steep slope and a large upstream area. These model results can aid in the design and siting of water protection measures within the drained area.  相似文献

The constitution and structure of sodium phosphosilicate coatings were investigated by paper chromatography, X-ray diffraction, and infrared spectroscopy. All the tests performed indicated that heating phosphosilicate coating samples resulted in the polymerization of the silicate to crystalline silica (-crystobalite) while the phosphate depolymerized. The extent of the depolymerization of the phosphate depended on the total Na2O in the phosphosilicate system. The assumption that the maximum quantity of Na2O in the phosphosilicate system, up to a molar ratio of 31 Na2OP2O5, associates with the phosphate, gave a good estimate of the phosphate chain distribution in the phosphosilicate system.  相似文献

The observability of nonlinear delay systems has previously been defined in an algebraic setting by a rank condition on modules over noncommutative rings. We introduce an analytic definition of observability to ensure the local uniqueness of state and initial conditions that correspond to a given input-output behaviour. It is shown that an algebraically observable delay system can be reformulated as a system of ordinary differential equations. Analytic observability is then decided by the local uniqueness of solutions to a boundary value problem for this ODE system.  相似文献

The unambiguous measurement of carrier concentration and mobility in semiconductor nanowires remains a challenging task. This is a consequence of their one-dimensional nature and the incompatibility with Hall or van der Pauw measurements. We propose a method that allows the direct determination of mobility and carrier concentration in nanowires in a contact-less manner. We demonstrate how forward Raman scattering enables the measurement of phonon-plasmon interactions. By applying this method to p-type GaAs nanowires, we were able to directly obtain values of the carrier concentration between 3.0 × 10(17) and 7.4 × 10(18) cm(-3) and a mobility of 31 cm(2) (V s)(-1) at room temperature. This study opens the path towards the study of plasmon-phonon interactions in semiconductor nanowires.  相似文献
