We present the design, fabrication, and performance of the multi-specimen heated platform for linear in situ heating during the Temperature-Programmed XPS (TPXPS). The platform is versatile, compatible with high vacuum (HV) and bakeout. The heater platform is tested under in situ linear heating of typical high surface area sorbent∕catalyst support--nanoporous TiO(2). The platform allows the TPXPS of multiple samples located on specimen disk that can be transferred in and out of the TPXPS chamber. Electric characteristics, temperature and pressure curves are provided. Heating power supply, PID temperature controller, data-logging hardware and software are described. 相似文献

We introduce the notion of ranking robustness, which refers to a property of a ranked list of documents that indicates how
stable the ranking is in the presence of uncertainty in the ranked documents. We propose a statistical measure called the
robustness score to quantify this notion. Our initial motivation for measuring ranking robustness is to predict topic difficulty
for content-based queries in the ad-hoc retrieval task. Our results demonstrate that the robustness score is positively and
consistently correlation with average precision of content-based queries across a variety of TREC test collections. Though
our focus is on prediction under the ad-hoc retrieval task, we observe an interesting negative correlation with query performance
when our technique is applied to named-page finding queries, which are a fundamentally different kind of queries. A side effect
of this different behavior of the robustness score between the two types of queries is that the robustness score is also found
to be a good feature for query classification.

Variable symmetries in a constraint satisfaction problem can be broken by adding lexicographic ordering constraints. Existing general methods of generating such sets of ordering constraints can require a huge number of constraints. This adds an unacceptable overhead to the solving process. Methods exist by which this large set of ordering constraints can be reduced to a much smaller set automatically, but their application is also prohibitively costly. In contrast, this paper takes a bottom-up approach. It examines some commonly-occurring families of groups and derives a minimal set of ordering constraints sufficient to break the symmetry each group describes. These minimal sets are then used as building blocks to generate minimal sets of ordering constraints for groups constructed via direct and imprimitive wreath products. Experimental results confirm the value of minimal sets of ordering constraints, which can now be generated much more cheaply than with previous methods. 相似文献

Research in computer-supported writing has traditionally compared electronic communication with oral, face-to-face communication to identify the benefits and weaknesses of each, as if they entailed dichotomous choices. In this article, we challenge that view and argue instead that any form of communication and its educational usefulness is shaped by the situation in which it is used, the backgrounds and goals of the participants, the institutional and technological setup, and the intended purpose of the medium. Three modes of communication in one graduate course are examined — oral discussion, synchronous written discussion on a local area network, and asynchronous written postings on an email list set up for the class. It was found that patterns of participation, topic introduction, and topic development differed across the three communication modes, but that the three were interwoven with each other and embedded within the larger classroom context and forms of knowledge creation in the class. Thus, rather than examining different communication media separately, researchers interested in understanding computer-supported collaborative writing need to look at how different media are used to create a meta-medium, which is established by the discourse community involved. 相似文献

Calculations are presented for the scattering of polarized light from a series of very rough one-dimensional gold-coated surfaces, as determined by the use of the Kirchhoff approximation with geometric shadowing. These surfaces have Gaussian autocorrelation functions with a 1/e width of 3.3 μm and Gaussian probability distributions of height with standard deviation varying between 0.25 and 1.73 μm. Calculations are performed for the scattering of light of wavelength 3.392 μm, so that the validity of the geometric-shadowing approximation and the Kirchhoff approximation itself are open questions. The values of the coherent (or specular) component of the scattered light for the four nonzero elements of the Mueller matrix (which fully describe the polarization properties of the scattered light) are calculated. Comparisons between the calculated results and experimental measurements on surfaces of the same parameters [Knotts and O'Donnell, J. Opt. Soc. Am. Asystem has been developed to measure the absorption cross section for a single carbon fiber at 35 GHz as a functio of length, orientation, and diameter. Typical lengths of the fibers considered ranged from 1 to 20 mm, and diameters ranged from 3 to 8 μm. The results were compared with the modified integra equation calculations of Waterman and Pedersen that describe the scattering and absorption behavior for a wire of finite length and conductivity. The dental profession is not static, but dynamic. New research findings, along with medical and technological advances, necessitate constant re-examination of treatment philosophies and techniques. What were acceptable treatment techniques in the past may not necessarily be the most effective and best techniques for our patients today. Currently, many practitioners feel that the only treatment for the correction of a skeletal Class III abnormality is via orthognathic surgery in older patients. In some cases it may be the only treatment option. But in most cases today, there are more conservative, non-surgical treatment alternatives in correcting Class III problems in younger aged children. In treating facial-skeletal problems, it must be emphasized that the human face is a biological masterpiece of form and function. Its importance has been documented in arts and sciences since the beginning of modern civilization. It is important enough so that individuals who are blessed with attractive features are afforded greater opportunities in our society. Attractive faces are associated with intelligence, honesty and good work ethics. With the advent of orthognathic surgery, functional appliance, functional regulator, and myofunctional therapy, the dental profession has the capability of leveling out the playing field for many individuals in our society. It does so by being able to correct problems closely associated with the human psyche--the human face. The ability to change facial features brings tremendous prestige to our profession. Along with this prestige comes greater responsibility. Our ability to change facial features entails greater understanding of facial balance and harmony. Ricketts states that the face must conform to stringent proportions known as the "divine proportion" in order for it to be esthetically pleasing. Also, our ability to move facial-skeletal structures entails greater understanding of the biomechanics of the human face. Without this knowledge practitioners can cause iatrogenic problems, such as temporomandibular disorders. Conversely, correcting facial-skeletal abnormalities have been found to alleviate many medical problems, such as chronic headaches, neck-back-shoulder pain, respiratory disorders, auditory disorders, etc. As more and more information is gathered, it is becoming clear that the physical, emotional and psychological health of a human being is intimately related to craniomandibular anatomy. In fact, the jaw and dental structures (with the exception of the tooth enamel) is formed from the neural crest cells along with the endocrine system, while the central nervous system is formed from the neural tube. The entire nervous system, the endocrine system and the dental system are formed from common tissue origin. This can explain why many facial-skeletal corrections are often accompanied by alleviation of many medical and physiological problems. These are exciting times for our profession. However, if we wish to address the needs of our patients well into the next century, we must continue to seek greater and greater knowledge in the area of the craniomandibular anatomy relative to the rest of the human body. It has much to do with facial esthetics, physiologic and psychologic harmony, and TMJ health. This knowledge will enable our profession to have the power to change human lives in a very positive way. As doctors, there can be no greater personal and professional satisfaction than to realize that, through our professional intervention, we are able to offer our patients the possibility of achieving greater happiness and quality of life. 相似文献

The key objective of this investigation was to evaluate the abrasion resistance of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) with and without synthetic fibers (SynFs). The abrasion resistance of normal concrete was also investigated in this study for comparison. The abrasion test was performed on concrete specimens according to the rotating-cutter method along with continuous monitoring of acoustic emission (AE) using attached AE sensors. The effects of changing concrete type and incorporating various types (flexible and semi-rigid) and lengths of SynFs on the abrasion behaviour were investigated with the aid of AE analysis. AE signal characteristics such as amplitude, signal strength, number of hits, and duration were gathered during testing. Furthermore, the collected AE data was used to complete b-value analysis as well as intensity analysis resulting in three additional parameters: b-value, severity (Sr), and historic index (H(t)). The results showed that the AE parameters were directly correlated with the abrasion damage in all tested mixtures. Adding SynFs to all SCC mixtures enhanced their abrasion resistance. The flexible fibers variety exhibited better abrasion performance on average than the semi-rigid fibers. Meanwhile, longer fibers showed lower abrasion resistance than the shorter ones with the same type. The results also indicated that AE intensity analysis was able to determine the ranges for H(t) and Sr that identify the extent of damage due to abrasion of SynF-reinforced SCC. 相似文献
