Summary This paper describes measurements of the impulses that particles experience while undergoing rapid shear. These were performed with an eye towards understanding the processes that lead to particle attrition and fracture. The measurements were taken from a discrete particle computer simulation of a simple shear flow of spheres. Special attention is paid to the strongest impulses as these will do the most damage. The results indicate that the largest impulses arise, not from the mean shear flow, but from the random particle velocities that are characterized by the so-called granular temperature. Measurements of the largest impulses are presented as functions of particle properties and solid concentration. Histograms of the impulse strengths illustrate the effect of concentration and particle surface friction. Finally, geometric distributions are presented that illustrate the shear induced anisotropy in the impulse strengths.  相似文献

Since the 1950s, 8.3 billion tonnes (Bt) of virgin plastics have been produced, of which around 5 Bt have accumulated as waste in oceans and other natural environments, posing severe threats to entire ecosystems. The need for sustainable bio-based alternatives to traditional petroleum-derived plastics is evident. Bioplastics produced from unprocessed biological materials have thus far suffered from heterogeneous and non-cohesive morphologies, which lead to weak mechanical properties and lack of processability, hindering their industrial integration. Here, a fast, simple, and scalable process is presented to transform raw microalgae into a self-bonded, recyclable, and backyard-compostable bioplastic with attractive mechanical properties surpassing those of other biobased plastics such as thermoplastic starch. Upon hot-pressing, the abundant and photosynthetic algae spirulina forms cohesive bioplastics with flexural modulus and strength in the range 3–5 GPa and 25.5–57 MPa, respectively, depending on pre-processing conditions and the addition of nanofillers. The machinability of these bioplastics, along with self-extinguishing properties, make them promising candidates for consumer plastics. Mechanical recycling and fast biodegradation in soil are demonstrated as end-of-life options. Finally, the environmental impacts are discussed in terms of global warming potential, highlighting the benefits of using a carbon-negative feedstock such as spirulina to fabricate plastics.  相似文献

By using the concept of transfer matrices and Bloch waves, we have derived a set of equations that provide insight into the operation of asymmetric Bragg reflectors that have been demonstrated to be useful in achieving high reflectivities in strained-material systems. These equations will be useful in the design of asymmetric mirrors and can be used to compare the trade-offs between the conventional, symmetric (quarter-wavelength), and asymmetric mirrors.  相似文献

A distributed optical-fiber stress sensor whose principle of operation is based on the frequency-modulation continuous-wave technique is reported. The sensor consists of a length of birefringent fiber with a mirror attached to one end, a diode laser, and a p-i-n photodiode detector. The intensity and the location of an applied stress are determined simultaneously by detecting the amplitude and the frequency of the beat signal, which is produced by two forward-coupled mode beams. The system was found to have a reasonable spatial resolution of 0.85 m (rms error) in a sensing range of 100 m. The advantages and limitations of the sensor are also discussed.  相似文献

Structural features of three regions of the capsaicin molecule necessary for agonist properties were delineated by a previously reported modular approach. These in vitro agonist effects were shown to correlate with analgesic potency in rodent models. Combination of optimal structural features from each of these regions of the capsaicin molecule have led to highly potent agonists (eg., 1b). Evaluation in vivo established that 1b had analgesic properties but poor oral activity, short duration of action, and excitatory side effects which precluded further development of this compound. Preliminary metabolism studies had shown that the phenol moiety of 1b was rapidly glucuronidated in vivo, providing a possible explanation for the poor pharmacokinetic profile. Subsequent specific modification of the phenol group led to compounds 2a-j, which retained in vitro potency. The in vivo profiles of two representatives of this series, 2a,h, were much improved over the "parent" phenol series, and they are candidates for development as analgesic agents.  相似文献

Eight subjects spent a single night in the sleep laboratory. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded during the presentation of two auditory "oddball' stimulus conditions in which tonal frequency was manipulated. In the first condition, 1000 Hz "standard' and 2000 Hz "deviant' tones were presented. In the second condition, the deviant tone was reduced to 1050 Hz. In both conditions, deviant probability was 0.2. Stimuli were presented every 600 ms during wakefulness and stages 2, 4, and REM of sleep. A distinctive N1 wave was visible in both stimulus conditions when the subject was awake. The deviant stimuli elicited a "mismatch negativity' (MMN) that inverted in polarity at the mastoid. In REM sleep, an N1 and a MMN were also elicited in both conditions. In the large deviance condition, the MMN had a slightly attenuated amplitude and was shorter in duration while in the small deviant condition, its peak latency was unusually early. Neither the N1 nor the MMN could be recorded in non-REM sleep.  相似文献

For domains in which fitness is subjective or difficult to express formally, interactive evolutionary computation (IEC) is a natural choice. It is possible that a collaborative process combining feedback from multiple users can improve the quality and quantity of generated artifacts. Picbreeder, a large-scale online experiment in collaborative interactive evolution (CIE), explores this potential. Picbreeder is an online community in which users can evolve and share images, and most importantly, continue evolving others' images. Through this process of branching from other images, and through continually increasing image complexity made possible by the underlying neuroevolution of augmenting topologies (NEAT) algorithm, evolved images proliferate unlike in any other current IEC system. This paper discusses not only the strengths of the Picbreeder approach, but its challenges and shortcomings as well, in the hope that lessons learned will inform the design of future CIE systems.  相似文献
