We report a polarization-independent widely tunable four-wave mixing wavelength converter using polarization diversity and broad-band orthogonal pumps in a single semiconductor optical amplifier. The conversion efficiency is nearly constant (less than 3-dB variation) over a 36-nm range with less than 0.34 dB polarization sensitivity. The power penalty at 10-9 bit error rate for a 10-Gb/s signal is less than 0.9 dB  相似文献

A time-delay controller is proposed in this letter. This controller possesses attractive properties, such as requiring only one tuning parameter. Furthermore, it can be applied to higher order systems as well as systems with dominant delay. The basic structure is integrated with an online estimation algorithm to form an adaptive time-delay controller. An experimental study is included to demonstrate its performance and merits compared with two similar controllers.  相似文献

An instrument that can measure the point concentration of frazil in water has been developed and calibrated. It was constructed on the physical principle of comparative resistance measurement. Laboratory testing showed that the instrument gave quantitative measurements of frazil. The measured concentration, however was greater than the actual concentration by a calibration coefficient F. F was found to be the product of two factors; a shape factor that was mainly caused by the anisotropy of frazil crystals, and a velocity factor that was caused by retardation of the frazil flocs in passing through the sensor probe. The shape factor was found to be approximately 2.2, and the velocity factor was found to be about 1.6 at a velocity of 15 cm/s, and close to unity at velocities greater than 22 cm/s.  相似文献

Although they show potential to improve ultrasound image quality, plane wave (PW) compounding and synthetic aperture (SA) imaging are computationally demanding and are known to be challenging to implement in real-time. In this work, we have developed a novel beamformer architecture with the real-time parallel processing capacity needed to enable fast realization of PW compounding and SA imaging. The beamformer hardware comprises an array of graphics processing units (GPUs) that are hosted within the same computer workstation. Their parallel computational resources are controlled by a pixel-based software processor that includes the operations of analytic signal conversion, delay-and-sum beamforming, and recursive compounding as required to generate images from the channel-domain data samples acquired using PW compounding and SA imaging principles. When using two GTX-480 GPUs for beamforming and one GTX-470 GPU for recursive compounding, the beamformer can compute compounded 512 x 255 pixel PW and SA images at throughputs of over 4700 fps and 3000 fps, respectively, for imaging depths of 5 cm and 15 cm (32 receive channels, 40 MHz sampling rate). Its processing capacity can be further increased if additional GPUs or more advanced models of GPU are used.  相似文献

Accidents and incidents often occur, because a basic and seemingly simple rule is ‘forgotten’, either unintentionally (error, lapse) or with some degree of deliberate negligence (violation). The present experiment examined the utility of a rehearsal and a last-minute reminder in reducing the magnitude of deviations from an important safety rule by qualified, but relatively inexperienced pilots, specifically, remaining above an altitude of 500-ft. A single rehearsal flight entailing a search for a target on the ground increased the minimum altitude in later flights, but this positive effect did not completely generalize when the target on the ground was changed. These results suggest that the rehearsal flight was encoded in a context-specific manner. The addition of an explicit, last minute reminder about the mandated minimum altitude just before each test flight failed to significantly alter the pilots’ behavior. The results are discussed with respect to their theoretical and practical implications.  相似文献

Class C β-lactamases mediate antibiotic resistance in bacteria by efficiently hydrolyzing a broad range of β-lactam antibiotics. With their clinical significance and the lack of commercially available effective inhibitors, development of class C β-lactamase inhibitors has become one of the recent hot issues in the pharmaceutical industry. In this paper, we report the protein engineering of a fluorescent Amp C β-lactamase mutant designated as V211Cf for the in vitro screening of class C β-lactamase inhibitors. When a fluorescein (f) was incorporated at the entrance of the enzyme's active site (position 211), Amp C β-lactamase from Enterobacter cloacae P99 was tailor-made into a novel fluorescent biosensing protein that could display a fluorescence enhancement upon binding with its β-lactam substrates/inhibitors. With its catalytic activity close to the wild-type level, V211Cf can act as a "natural" fluorescent drug target for screening small binding molecules. In addition, V211Cf can allow specific detection for its active-site binding molecules and discriminate them from nondruglike molecules in the screen. Furthermore, V211Cf is amenable to a high throughput format. Taken together, V211Cf demonstrates the potential as an efficient tool for screening class C β-lactamase inhibitors and facilitates the discovery of therapeutics that can combat the clinically important class C β-lactamases.  相似文献

Backscattering enhancement can exist in volume-surface interactions where a double bounce can arise from one volume scattering and one surface scattering. An important quantity to be determined in backscattering enhancement is the angular width. The authors study backscattering enhancement of the volume-surface interaction by performing Monte-Carlo simulations of scattering by vertical dielectric cylinders overlying a dielectric half space using the Foldy-Lax multiple-scattering equations. The results indicate that the angular width of backscattering enhancement for a scattering layer with a small optical thickness is of the order of the wavelength divided by the layer thickness giving an appreciable angular width of the order of 10-30 degrees that can be important for remote sensing applications. The effects of clustering of scatterers leading to collective scattering and absorption effects are also studied  相似文献

The fabrication of the first 1.55-/spl mu/m wavelength tunable electroabsorption modulated laser integrated with a bent waveguide distributed-feedback laser is reported. A low-threshold and stable single-mode operation is obtained when the devices were uniformly pumped. A single-mode output power close to 10 mW from a single-mode fiber (40 mW in free space) is obtained with a 0 V bias to the modulator and an extinction ratio of up to 15 dB at 2.5 V. This single mode stability is due to the continuously distributed phase shift implemented in the structure. With a nonuniform injection, it was possible to select one particular mode out of the three neighboring modes inside the broad-reflection band of the reflector. A tuning range of 3.5 mm was obtained while maintaining an output power of more than 2 dBm from each mode.  相似文献
