This work deals with the numerical evaluation of the structural response of simply supported (transversally loaded at mid-span) and cantilever (subjected to tip point loads) beams built from a commercial pultruded I-section GFRP profile. In particular, the paper addresses the beam (i) geometrically linear behaviour in service conditions, (ii) local and lateral-torsional buckling behaviour, and (iii) lateral-torsional post-buckling behaviour, including the effect of the load point of application location. The numerical results are obtained by means of (i) novel Generalised Beam Theory (GBT) beam finite element formulations, able to capture the influence of the load point of application, and (ii) shell finite element analyses carried out in the code Abaqus. These numerical results are compared with (i) the experimental values reported and discussed in the companion paper (Part 1) and (ii) values provided by analytical formulae available in the literature.  相似文献

The identification and production of recombinant morphogens and growth factors that play key roles in tissue regeneration have generated much enthusiasm and numerous clinical trials, but the results of many of these trials have been largely disappointing. Interestingly, the trials that have shown benefit all contain a common denominator, the presence of a material carrier, suggesting strongly that spatio-temporal control over the location and bioactivity of factors after introduction into the body is crucial to achieve tangible therapeutic effect. Sophisticated materials systems that regulate the biological presentation of growth factors represent an attractive new generation of therapeutic agents for the treatment of a wide variety of diseases. This review provides an overview of growth factor delivery in tissue engineering. Certain fundamental issues and design strategies relevant to the material carriers that are being actively pursued to address specific technical objectives are discussed. Recent progress highlights the importance of materials science and engineering in growth factor delivery approaches to regenerative medicine.  相似文献

Unmanned vehicles have already proved invaluable in environmental field studies by providing levels of spatial–temporal sampling resolution which could have not been attained before. Recent trends show that the levels of spatial–temporal sampling resolutions attained with individual vehicles are feasible for wide areas through the operation of persistent vehicle networks. The possibility of persistent sampling over wide areas has the potential to revolutionize environmental field studies. The roles of unmanned vehicle systems in future environmental field studies are discussed in the light of the recent technological developments and trends, along with the major challenges associated to this vision. The discussion is illustrated with examples of developments from the Underwater Systems and Technologies Laboratory from Porto University, Portugal.  相似文献

The enhancement of the 1 day strength of cementitious systems by a combination of calcium chloride (CaCl2) and diethanol-isopropanolamine (DEIPA) was studied, particularly in blended cement systems. A combination of quantitative X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement (QXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/backscattered electron image analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and isothermal calorimetry were used to investigate the mechanism of strength enhancement by the additives. The additives were found to increase the early age mortar strength by enhancing the cement hydration, with the DEIPA enhancing primarily the aluminate hydration. DEIPA also affected the morphology of portlandite which was formed as thin plates. In parallel, the calcium-to-silica ratio of the C-S-H was found to increase with the use of DEIPA, possibly because of the inclusion of microcrystalline portlandite. After 48 h DEIPA was found to directly enhance the rate of reaction of granulated blast-furnace slag and fly ash.  相似文献

To investigate the hypothesis that T cells recognizing specific Ags localize to the site of disease activity in human bancroftian filariasis, we have compared the repertoire of TCR Vbeta gene segments in lesions vs blood in individual patients by RT-PCR ELISA. Vbeta14 and Vbeta24 were overrepresented (5% greater in tissue compared with PBMCs and/or tissue/PBMC ratios in the highest 5% of all tissue/PBMC ratios for all Vbetas for all subjects) in 50% and 40% of study subjects, respectively. Overrepresentation of these two Vbetas did not occur in any control subject. In comparing three patient groups, the proportion of individuals meeting at least one criterion for Vbeta14 overrepresentation was shown to increase in tandem with our current concepts of disease progression (asymptomatic filariasis = 25%; clinical filariasis with active infection = 60%; clinical filariasis without active infection = 71%). In 6 of the 10 individuals with Vbeta14 overrepresentation, Vbeta14 represented >20% of the entire lesional Vbeta repertoire. All but one of the 20 study subjects had at least one Vbeta gene segment that was overrepresented in tissue compared with PBMCs. Only a small number of Vbetas, usually three or less, were overrepresented in any single filariasis patient. However, in the same tissue, no differences between patient groups were found when IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, IL-4, IL-5, and IL-12 mRNA expression were examined. Taken together, these findings suggest that, in principle, in essentially all patients, whether with subclinical or with clinical filariasis, distinct and limited T cell populations are concentrated in affected tissue.  相似文献

Evaluation of the physical–chemical properties of aqueous solutions of nonionic surfactants based on polyoxides can be performed by different methods. Depending on the technique used, there can be a significant variation in the critical micelle concentration (CMC) found. This is related to the sensitivity of the technique regarding the unimers and micelles present in the solution as well as the structure of the surfactant evaluated. In this work, the CMC values of aqueous solutions of linear and branched poly(ethylene oxide‐polypropylene oxide) (PEO‐PPO) block copolymers were determined by tensiometry, fluorescence, and particle size analysis, using copolymers having adjacent structures (that is, hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments located adjacently in the copolymer) and alternating structures. Tensiometry was used to measure the surface tension as a function of the copolymer concentration in aqueous solution. Fluorescence was used to determine the fluorescence intensity of pyrene to plot the graphs of the I1/I3 and IE/IM relations according to the surfactant concentration. Finally, particle size analysis was used to determine the diffusion coefficient of the particles. The results showed that the fluorescence and particle size techniques provide lower (and mutually concordant) CMC values and can be considered more precise because these methods directly analyze the bulk of the solution. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We evaluated ethanol- and HCl-induced mucosal damages in developing rats. The degree of damage induced by ethanol and HCl was greatest in 1-week-old rats and decreased significantly with age until 4 weeks; thereafter it increased again. To evaluate the effect of weaning on the maturational changes in mucosal defense, we compared ethanol-induced mucosal damage among three groups of newborn rats: (1) receiving milk only; (2) receiving only rat chow from 14 days of age, and (3) having free access to milk and chow. There were no significant differences at 18 and 21 days of age. The mucus thickness increased with age until 8 weeks and was not affected by weaning. In conclusion, developmental changes occur in gastric mucosal protection in rats. Weaning does not have a significant effect on these changes.  相似文献

Double-skin façades (DSF) are used as an architectural solution to improve indoor comfort being characterized by having at least two membranes between the interior occupied space and the exterior environment, separated by an air gap where the shading devices lie. The pressure within the gap plays an important role on (i) the glazing structural safety; (ii) the shaft ventilation, in particular if a natural ventilation scheme is implemented, but also to promote an efficient gap air change, and (iii) the safety of maintenance staff, especially when windows may be opened to the interior. Although there are several DSF typologies only the multi-storey case, where no horizontal or vertical partitioning exists between the two skins, will be analysed in this paper. Nevertheless, there are still a number of possible layouts for multi-storey DSF that might impose different pressure distributions within the gap. This paper refers to a set of wind tunnel tests made over a building model with different multi-storey DSF layouts—from open on all edges to fully lateral closure and from narrow to wide gap depths, for an extended range of wind directions. The experimental data showed a layout dependent inner wall pressure distribution that may be considerably different from the unsheltered building.  相似文献

This study evaluated the use of pea (Pisum sativum) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) protein isolates (PPI and CPI) in the microencapsulation of ascorbic acid (AA), by spray drying. PPI and CPI were used pure or mixed with maltodextrin (M) as wall materials of AA. The process yield was improved from 66% to 86% by the addition of M (CPI/M and PPI/M); also, AA particles yield was 79%. The AA retention from the drying process was higher in PPI/M (69%) than in CPI/M (66%), and this was attributed to PPI proteolysis profile, demonstrated by the SDS–PAGE electrophoresis. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that AA particles were similarly spherical and shriveled. Mean particle sizes of PPI/M/AA and CPI/M/AA were 7 and 8 μm, respectively. This study showed the exploration of protein isolates from legumes in the development of a microparticulate system containing AA with great potential for use in human health.  相似文献
