The biogeochemical cycling of iron, manganese, sulfide, and dissolved organic carbon were investigated to provide information on the transport and removal processes that control the bioavailability of isotopic mercury amended to a lake. Lake profiles showed a similar trend of hypolimnetic enrichment of Fe, Mn, DOC, sulfide, and the lake spike ((202)Hg, purity 90.8%) and ambient of pools of total mercury (HgT) and methylmercury (MeHg). Hypolimnetic enrichment of Fe and Mn indicated that reductive mobilization occurred primarily at the sediment-water interface and that Fe and Mn oxides were abundant within the sediments prior to the onset of anoxia. A strong relationship (r(2)=0.986, n=15, p<0.001) between filterable Fe and Mn indicated that reduction of Fe and Mn hydrous oxides in the sediments is a common in-lake source of Fe(II) and Mn(II) to the hypolimnion and that a consistent Mn:Fe mass ratio of 0.05 exists in the lake. A strong linear relationship of both the filterable [Fe] (r(2)=0.966, n=15, p<0.001) and [Mn] (r(2)=0.964, n=15, p<0.001) to [DOC] indicated a close linkage of the cycles of Fe and Mn to DOC. Persistence of iron oxides in anoxic environments suggested that DOC was being co-precipitated with Fe oxide and released into solution by the reductive dissolution of the oxide. The relationship between ambient and lake spike HgT (r(2)=0.920, n=27, p<0.001) and MeHg (r(2)=0.967, n=23, p<0.001) indicated that similar biogeochemical processes control the temporal and spatial distribution in the water column. The larger fraction of MeHg in the lake spike compared to the ambient pool in the hypolimnion suggests that lake spike may be more available for methylation. A linear relationship of DOC to both filterable ambient HgT (r(2)=0.406, n=27, p<0.001) and lake spike HgT (r(2)=0.314, n=15, p=0.002) suggest a role of organic matter in Hg transport and cycling. However, a weak relationship between the ambient and lake spike pools of MeHg to DOC indicated that other processes have a major role in controlling the abundance and distribution of MeHg. Our results suggest that Fe and Mn play important roles in the transport and cycling of ambient and spike HgT and MeHg in the hypolimnion, in part through processes linked to the formation and dissolution of organic matter-containing Fe and Mn hydrous oxides particles.  相似文献

Segregated areas may occur around an attractive park or a waste incinerator, but the magnitude and group membership of the people in closest proximity will likely be difierent. We therefore introduce a local segregation measure that can be applied to any location within a metropolitan area, and that can identify the group that is relatively more concentrated around that reference location. We further introduce an inference approach to identify the statistical significance of a particular segregation value. In an exploratory setting the index can be used to generate a map of hot spots, and seed the question: “why is this group significantly concentrated around that location?”  相似文献

Since 1885, the hospital has evolved from a public charity to a scientific paragon. A growing chorus of criticism, though, attacks its impersonality and inhospitality, especially in the emerging competitive health market which emphasizes ambulatory care. Hospital administrators have responded by asking designers to re-create the hospital into a more welcoming and accessible place. A popular method of achieving comfort and familiarity has been to adapt elements of the shopping mall to the hospital and even to consider merging mall and hospital. This adaptation raises important concerns about the evolution of attitudes toward illness and death, private and public spaces, and the mall as a modern design standard. This article highlights one unusual implication, the possibility that the mall, viewed as a reason for the diminishment of public space, might be a means of opening to the public one of society's most closed institutions—the hospital.  相似文献

World Building     
This study has two parts: a brief preliminary introduction of the main theme, world building, and a longer study of a single building, Skirkanich Hall, finished recently in Philadelphia and designed by Tod William and Billie Tsien. While many, perhaps most successful works of architecture exemplify how ‘worlds’ are established through architectural means, this one is particularly useful because of the strong and subtle ways it transforms its urban location. Because problems of spatial depth, figuration, and the structure of urban topography are key in the manner of world building presented here, analogous representations in a few modern paintings are also described. The key issue, though, is architecture's capacity to indicate a renewed sense of common purpose and shared interests in contemporary cities and society, architecture's greatest challenge in a time that is plagued by so much self-interest and self assertion.  相似文献

The effects of Lignosite#rm lignosulfonate, a refined lignosulfonate product that is obtained from the sulfite pulping process, on growth and survival of plants were investigated. Following applications of 0, 7500, 15,000 and 22,500 cm3#shm2 to 32 plots within a forest plantation, the following were monitored: (1) live aboveground biomass of vascular plants, (2) growth of Douglar fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and (3) lignosulfonate migration through the soil profile. Live aboveground biomass of woody vegetation was not affected, and that of herbaceous plants was significantly decreased only at the two greatest application rates. Growth of the Douglas fir trees was not significantly affected. Lignosulfonates disappeared from the soil profile at the same rate regardless of initial concentration. Although it is not practical to use this material as a herbicide in western Washington, land application of lignosulfonates may be environmentally more attractive than traditional disposal methods.  相似文献
