Distractor interference effects were compared between distractors in the periphery and those placed at fixation. In 6 experiments, the authors show that fixation distractors produce larger interference effects than peripheral distractors. However, the fixation distractor effects are modulated by perceptual load to the same extent as are peripheral distractor effects (Experiments 1 and 2). Experiment 3 showed that fixation distractors are harder to filter out than peripheral distractors. The larger distractor effects at fixation are not due to the cortical magnification of foveal stimuli (Experiments 4 and 5), nor can they be attributed to cuing by the fixation point (Experiment 2), the lower predictability or greater location certainty of fixation distractors (Experiment 5), or their being in a central position (Experiment 6). The authors suggest that preferential access to attention renders fixation distractors harder to ignore than peripheral distractors. We are developing a high-efficiency neutron detector with 1 cm position resolution and coarse energy resolution for use at high-flux neutron source facilities currently proposed or under construction. The detector concept integrates a segmented 3He ionization chamber with the position sensitive, charged particle collection methods of a MicroMegas detector. Neutron absorption on the helium produces protons and tritons that ionize the fill gas. The charge is amplified in the field region around a wire mesh and subsequently detected in current mode by wire strips mounted on a substrate. One module consisting of a high-voltage plate, a field-shaping high-voltage plate, a grid and wire strips defines a detection region. For 100 % efficiency, detector modules are consecutively placed along the beam axis. Analysis over several regions with alternating wire strip orientation provides a two-dimensional beam profile. By using 3He, a 1/v absorption gas, each axial region captures neutrons of a different energy range, providing an energy-sensitive detection scheme especially useful at continuous beam sources.  相似文献

The ability of voltage-gated potassium channel alpha-subunits to form heteromultimers has complicated efforts to use toxins to characterize potassium channels in native cells. Here I investigate the effects of subunit composition on toxin blocking affinity, using three members of the Shaker subfamily of potassium channel alpha-subunits (Kv1.1, Kv1.2 and Kv1.4), which are known to form heteromultimers in vivo, in the Xenopus oocyte expression system. These subunits were coexpressed as pairs in which one member was toxin-sensitive and the other relatively insensitive. The blocking affinity of two dendrotoxins (DTX-I and delta-DTX) and a scorpion toxin (tityustoxin-Kalpha) on the resulting mixed population of channels was measured to evaluate three models of toxin block. The single subunit model, in which a single toxin-sensitive subunit renders the channel toxin sensitive, best described all of the data for the two dendrotoxins and the block of tityustoxin-Kalpha for a mixed population of channels composed of Kv1.1 and Kv1.2 subunits. However, with tityustoxin-Kalpha, the data for a mixed population of Kv1.2 and Kv1.4 subunits was fit best by a model in which the toxin interacts with all four subunits for high-affinity block. The data suggest that subunit composition of potassium channels can have a large effect on toxin block and that different toxins yield strikingly diverse results with the same pair of subunits, even when they are nearly identical in blocking affinity for the toxin-sensitive subunit.  相似文献

Vitamin B1 has been determined in a large number of beers by the fermentation method of Schultz, Atkin and Frey which has not previously been applied to worts and beers. In general, the highest amounts were found in beers of high original gravity and in those made almost entirely from malt. Well-attenuated and unprimed beers give the highest ratio, units of B1: calories. During the brew the malt, almost the sole source of vitamin B1, yields up the vitamin to the wort, which in its turn loses most of it to the yeast. Most of the vitamin B1 results have been confirmed by the thiochrome method involving an entirely different principle, whilst the general validity of both methods was further confirmed by animal feedings tests. Determination of Riboflavin (vitamin B2) by the microbiological method of Snell and Strong has led to the following conclusions:—Riboflavin is formed during germination of barley and in growing yeast. Most of the riboflavin of the malt passes into the wort during mashing and sparging and remains in the beer, the yeast not taking out any appreciable quantity. The number of microgrms. of riboflavin per 100 ml. of beer, in general, exceeds somewhat the number of degrees of original gravity.  相似文献

Antibodies to DNA (anti-DNA) are the serological hallmark of systemic lupus erythematosus, a prototypic autoimmune disease. These antibodies bind to conserved sites on single-stranded and double-stranded DNA and display variable region somatic mutations consistent with antigen selection. Nevertheless, the interaction of anti-DNA with DNA has unconventional features. Anti-DNA antibodies bind by a mechanism called monogamous bivalency, in which stable interaction requires contact of both Fab sites with determinants on the same extended DNA molecule; the size of this DNA can be hundreds to thousands of bases, especially in solid phase assays. This binding also requires the presence of the Fc portion of IgG, a binding mechanism known as Fc-dependent monogamous bivalency. As shown by the effects of ionic strength in association and dissociation assays, anti-DNA binding is primarily electrostatic. Like anti-DNA autoantibodies, anti-DNA antibodies that bind specifically to non-conserved sites on bacterial DNA, a type of anti-DNA found in otherwise healthy individuals, also interact by monogamous bivalency. The unconventional features of anti-DNA antibodies may reflect the highly charged and polymeric nature of DNA and the need for molecular rearrangements to facilitate monogamous bivalency; the Fc portion contributes to binding in an as yet unknown way.  相似文献

Since browsing hypertext can present a formidable cognitive challenge, user interface design plays a major role in determining acceptability. In the Unix workstation version of Hyperties, a research-oriented prototype, we focussed on design features that facilitate browsing. We first give a general overview of Hyperties and its markup language. Customizable documents can be generated by the conditional text feature that enables dynamic and selective display of text and graphics. In addition we present: — an innovative solution to link identification: pop-out graphical buttons of arbitrary shape.

— application of pie menus to permit low cognitive load actions that reduce the distraction of common actions, such as page turning or window selection.

— multiple window selection strategies that reduce clutter and housekeeping effort. We preferred piles-of-tiles, in which standard-sized windows were arranged in a consistent pattern on the display and actions could be done rapidly, allowing users to concentrate on the contents.

One of the challenges of tissue engineering, a promising cell-based treatment for damaged or diseased cartilage, is designing the scaffold that provides structure while the tissue regenerates. In addition to the scaffold material’s biocompatibility, mechanical properties, and ease of manufacturing, scaffold interactions with the cells must also be considered. In cartilage tissue engineering, a range of scaffolds with various degrees of cell attachment have been proposed, but the attachment density and type have yet to be optimized. Several techniques have been developed to modulate cell adhesion to the scaffold. These studies suggest that the need for cell attachment in cartilage tissue engineering may vary with cell type, stage of differentiation, culture condition, and scaffold material. Further studies will elucidate the role of cell attachment in cartilage regeneration and enhance efforts to engineer cell-based cartilage therapies.  相似文献

Reviews the book, The Cambridge companion to Piaget edited by Ulrich Müller, Jeremy Carpendale, and Leslie Smith (see record 2010-05478-000). In the 30th anniversary year of Piaget’s death, Müller, Carpendale, and Smith propose a much-needed comprehensive introduction to the key aspects of this legendary psychologist’s work. While there have been several monographs available on Piaget’s theory, they tend to focus on either Piaget’s theoretical or empirical work. The current authors have solicited 18 individually solid chapters that survey both the theoretical and epistemological aspects of Piaget’s work and elaborate on the relations between empirical research and epistemological issues. The volume covers a large territory, spanning from the personal and historical contexts that shaped Piaget’s intellectual growth to brief introductions of Piaget’s empirical work on cognitive development in infancy, childhood, and adolescence.
