Fire spread and growth on real‐scale four cushion mock‐ups of residential upholstered furniture (RUF) were investigated with the goal of identifying whether changes in five classes of materials (barrier, flexible polyurethane foam, polyester fiber wrap, upholstery fabric, and sewing thread), referred to as factors, resulted in statistically significant changes in burning behavior. A fractional factorial experimental design plus practical considerations yielded a test matrix with 20 material combinations. Experiments were repeated a minimum of two times. Measurements included fire spread rates derived from video recordings and heat release rates (HRRs). A total of 13 experimental parameters (3 based on the videos and 10 on the HRR results), referred to as responses, characterized the measurements. Statistical analyses based on Main Effects Plots (main effects) and Block Plots (main effects and factor interactions) were used. The results showed that three of the factors resulted in statistically significant effects on varying numbers of the 13 responses. The Barrier and Fabric factors had the strongest main effects with roughly comparable magnitudes. Foam was statistically significant for fewer of the responses and its overall strength was weaker than for Barrier and Fabric. No statistically significant main effects were identified for Wrap or Thread. Multiple two‐term interactions between factors were identified as being statistically significant. The Barrier*Fabric interaction resulted in the highest number of and strongest statistically significant effects. The existence of two‐term interactions means that it will be necessary to consider their effects in approaches designed to predict the burning behavior of RUF.  相似文献

Three Listeria monocytogenes strains (Scott A, OSY-8578, and OSY-328) that differ considerably in barotolerance were grown to stationary phase and suspended individually in phosphate buffer (pH 7.0). Twelve phenolic compounds, including commercially used food additives, were screened for the ability to sensitize L. monocytogenes to high-pressure processing (HPP). Each L. monocytogenes strain was exposed to each of the 12 phenolic compounds (100 ppm each) for 60 min; this was followed by a pressure treatment at 400 MPa for 5 min. Six phenolic compounds increased the efficacy of HPP against L. monocytogenes but tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) was the most effective. The additives alone at 100 ppm were not lethal for L. monocytogenes. Subsequently, the three L. monocytogenes strains were exposed to TBHQ before or after pressure treatments at 400 or 500 MPa for 5 min. When TBHQ was added after the pressure treatment, the combined treatment was more lethal than was pressure alone. However, the lethality attributable to TBHQ was greater when the additive was applied before rather than after pressure treatment. The inactivation kinetics of the L. monocytogenes strains at 300, 500, and 700 MPa, in the presence or absence of TBHQ, was investigated. All survivor plots showed non-linear inactivation kinetics, but tailing behavior was most pronounced when HPP was used alone. Combinations of TBHQ and HPP eliminated tailing behavior when survivors were monitored by direct plating or an enrichment procedure. Pressure and phenolic additives are apparently a potent bactericidal combination against L. monocytogenes.  相似文献

We report single-molecule-transistor measurements on devices incorporating magnetic molecules. By studying the electron-tunneling spectrum as a function of magnetic field, we are able to identify signatures of magnetic states and their associated magnetic anisotropy. A comparison of the data to simulations also suggests that sequential electron tunneling may enhance the magnetic relaxation of the magnetic molecule.  相似文献

The formation of high charge-state protein ions with nanoelectrospray ionization (nESI) from purely aqueous ammonium bicarbonate solutions at neutral pH, where the proteins have native or native-like conformations prior to ESI droplet formation, is demonstrated. This "electrothermal" supercharging method depends on the temperature of the instrument entrance capillary, the nESI spray potential, and the solution ionic strength and buffer, although other factors almost certainly contribute. Mass spectra obtained with electrothermal supercharging appear similar to those obtained from denaturing solutions where charging beyond the total number of basic sites can be achieved. For example, a 17+ ion of bovine ubiquitin was formed by nESI of a 100 mM ammonium bicarbonate, pH 7.0, solution, which is three more charges than the total number of basic amino acids plus the N-terminus. Heating of the ESI droplets in the vacuum/atmosphere interface and the concomitant denaturation of the protein in the ESI droplets prior to ion formation appears to be the primary origin of the very high charge-state ions formed from these purely aqueous, buffered solutions. nESI mass spectra resembling those obtained under traditional native or denaturing conditions can be reversibly obtained simply by toggling the spray voltage between low and high values.  相似文献

This paper contrasts alternate methodological approaches of investigating public preferences, the random parameter logit (RPL) where tastes and preferences of respondents are assumed to be heterogeneous and the conditional logit (CL) approach where tastes and preferences remain fixed for individuals. We conducted a choice experiment to assess preferences for woody biomass based electricity in Arkansas, Florida, and Virginia. Reduction of CO2 emissions and improvement of forest habitat by decreasing risk of wildfires and pest outbreaks were presented to respondents as attributes of using green electricity. The results indicate that heterogeneous preferences might be a better fit for assessing preferences for green electricity. All levels of both attributes were positive contributors to welfare but they were no statistically significant. Respondents expressed a positive mean marginal willingness to pay (WTP) for each attribute level. The total WTP for green electricity per kilowatt hour was $0.049 kWh or $40.5 per capita year− 1 when converted into future total annual expenditures.  相似文献

Stiffness, strength, and toughness are the three primary attributes of a material, in terms of its mechanical properties. Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are known to exhibit elastic moduli at a fraction lower than crystalline alloys and have extraordinary strength. However, the reported values of fracture toughness of BMGs are highly variable; some BMGs such as the Zr-based ones have toughness values that are comparable to some high strength steels and titanium alloys, whereas there are also BMGs that are almost as brittle as silicate glasses. Invariably, monolithic BMGs exhibit no or low crack growth resistance and tend to become brittle upon structural relaxation. Despite its critical importance for the use of BMGs as structural materials, the fracture toughness of BMGs is relatively poorly understood. In this paper, we review the available literature to summarize the current understanding of the mechanics and micromechanisms of BMG toughness and highlight the needs for future research in this important area.  相似文献

Glasses are normally brittle materials with no tensile ductility at room temperature. Using in situ, quantitative nanomechanical tests inside a transmission electron microscope, we demonstrate that certain nanoscale metallic glass samples are exceptions to this general rule. Such metallic glasses can be intrinsically ductile, capable of elongation and necking under uniaxial tension, in lieu of catastrophic fracture caused by severe shear banding. Beam-off tests confirm that the ductile behaviors are not artifacts due to electron-beam effects during the in situ tests. Additional experiments indicate that ductile necking gives way to fast shear banding failure at increased samples sizes and elevated strain rates. The observed spread-out shear transformations delaying strain localization and severe shear banding are explained in terms of the propensity for participation in deformation, while the tendency towards necking is attributed to the lack of strain hardening mechanism and inadequate strain rate hardening.  相似文献

Geologic carbon sequestration represents a promising option for carbon mitigation. Injected CO(2), however, can potentially leak into water systems, increase water acidity, and mobilize metals. This study used column experiments to quantify the effects of environmental controls on cadmium desorption during CO(2) leakage in subsurface systems without ambient flow. Results show that fast leakage rates are responsible for earlier and larger amounts of Cd desorption. Long weathering time of Cd laden clay leads to low Cd desorption. Calcite content as low as 10% can mitigate the effect of pH reduction and result in zero Cd desorption. Increasing the salinity of the leaking fluid has a relatively minor effect, primarily due to the offsetting impacts of an increased extent of ion exchange and the decrease in CO(2) solubility (and therefore acidity). This work systematically quantifies, for the first time, the effects of environmental controls on Cd desorption and points to key parameters for risk assessment associated with metal mobilization during CO(2) leakage.  相似文献

The sustainability of water resources in future decades is likely to be affected by increases in water demand due to population growth, increases in power generation, and climate change. This study presents water withdrawal projections in the United States (U.S.) in 2050 as a result of projected population increases and power generation at the county level as well as the availability of local renewable water supplies. The growth scenario assumes the per capita water use rate for municipal withdrawals to remain at 2005 levels and the water use rates for new thermoelectric plants at levels in modern closed-loop cooling systems. In projecting renewable water supply in future years, median projected monthly precipitation and temperature by sixteen climate models were used to derive available precipitation in 2050 (averaged over 2040-2059). Withdrawals and available precipitation were compared to identify regions that use a large fraction of their renewable local water supply. A water supply sustainability risk index that takes into account additional attributes such as susceptibility to drought, growth in water withdrawal, increased need for storage, and groundwater use was developed to evaluate areas at greater risk. Based on the ranking by the index, high risk areas can be assessed in more mechanistic detail in future work.  相似文献

We present a method to control the work function of metallic carbon nanotube transparent electrodes by functionalization of the random network with metallic nanoparticles. Flexible functionalized electrodes with high transparency (~90%) can be obtained with work function values ranging from ~4.6 up to ~5.1 eV, depending on the nature of the nanoparticles. The work function values were obtained by comparative in situ Kelvin probe force microscopy under ultra high vacuum and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. Interestingly, by appropriate choice of the metal source for functionalization, work function engineering can lead to work function values higher or lower than that for pristine metallic nanotubes. This could be of great interest for adjusting the work function of transparent electrodes to active layers in many optoelectronics devices.  相似文献
