The Silicon Backplane Design for an LCOS Polarization-Insensitive Phase Hologram SLM

Polarization-insensitivity is achieved in a reflective spatial light modulator by laying a quarter-wave plate (QWP) at the incident wavelength directly over the mirror pixels of a silicon backplane, and forming a nematic Freedrickcz cell over the QWP to modulate the reflected phase. To achieve the highest drive voltage from the available silicon process, a switched voltage common front electrode design is described, with variable amplitude square wave drive to the pixels to maintain constant root-mean-square drive and minimize phase fluctuations during the dc balance refresh cycle. The silicon has been fabricated and liquid-crystal-on-silicon cells both with and without the QWP assembled; applications include optically transparent switches for optical networks, beam steering for add-drop multiplexers for wavelength-division-multiplexing telecommunications, television multicast, and holographic projection.     

Structure of very early protein folding intermediates: new insights through a variant of hydrogen exchange labelling

BACKGROUND: Hydrogen exchange labelling has been a key method in characterizing the structure of transient folding intermediates. In studies of several proteins, however, there has been clear spectroscopic evidence for partial folding of some kind at very early times, before any protection from exchange was measurable. These results, presumably a consequence of limited stability of specific backbone interactions, have made it difficult to assess the extent of native-like folding in the very early intermediates. We have used a variant of the labelling method to investigate marginally stable structures formed within the first few milliseconds of refolding of two such proteins, hen lysozyme and ubiquitin. RESULTS: In lysozyme, population of a subset of native-like secondary structures on this timescale is revealed, thus reconciling the exchange behaviour with circular dichroism measurements and confirming the significance of the rapidly formed embryonic structure as a foundation for the subsequent folding pathway. In the case of ubiquitin, by contrast, no significantly protective structure was detectable, suggesting that here secondary structural elements can be populated only marginally ahead of the major cooperative folding event; this was also supported by stopped-flow circular dichroism measurements. CONCLUSIONS: The hydrogen exchange approach can be extended to probe the formation of native-like structure formed in very early folding intermediates, even when the stability of specific interactions is marginal. In the case of lysozyme, this has provided a new window on an early stage of organization of the alpha-helical domain.     

Overview of health-related quality-of-life measures for pediatric patients: application in the assessment of pharmacotherapeutic and pharmacoeconomic outcomes

Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is an important dimension in assessing health care. Several methodologic considerations are related to the manner in which these data are obtained in children. Few multidimensional generic measures of quality of life (QOL) have been developed for children and adolescents. Most published research concerns the development of tools to be used in a disease-specific manner for clinical trials. Although several authors point out numerous advantages in assessing HRQOL in clinical practice, several barriers must be overcome for this to occur. In the current era of economic restraint, HRQOL measures must be integrated into pharmaco-economic analyses to assess fully the impact of a drug on health care resources and outcomes.     

Neuropeptide Y and luteinizing hormone releasing hormone synergize to stimulate the development of cellular follicle-stimulating hormone in the hamster adenohypophysis

Luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) stimulates the development of cellular FSH immunoreactivity in the perinatal hamster adenohypophysis. Because neuropeptide Y (NPY) can act directly on rat adenohypophysial cells to stimulate FSH and LH release and potentiate the stimulatory effect of LHRH on FSH and LH release, we investigated the effects of NPY alone and in combination with a low, ineffective dose of LHRH on inducing cellular FSH immunoreactivity in the neonatal hamster adenohypophysis. Neonatal female pituitary glands were grafted beneath the right renal capsules of hypophysectomized-ovariectomized adult hamster hosts with a catheter implanted in the external jugular vein. After treatment, hosts were decapitated and graft tissue was stained for FSH and LH immunoreactivity. The mean percentage of adenohypophysial cells that stained for FSH was low (2.8%) in grafts in hosts infused continuously with heparinized saline vehicle for 7 days. In other hosts, peptides were pulsed through the catheter every 12 h for 7 days. The mean percentage of FSH cells also was low after pulsing 6 ng LHRH or 2 micrograms NPY but increased substantially when the two peptides were pulsed simultaneously. No differences in the mean percentage of LH cells existed between any of the groups. The results demonstrate that NPY and LHRH can synergize to induce cellular FSH immunoreactivity in the neonatal female hamster.     

Developing competency-based perioperative orientation programs

Ensuring the competency of staff members at all levels of practice is an ongoing challenge for perioperative clinical educators. The authors developed a competency-based orientation program using AORN's perioperative nursing competency statements as a conceptual framework. The model also incorporates requirements from external regulatory agencies (e.g., the Joints Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) that influence the direction of health care institutions seeking accreditation. The model provides the components necessary to validate the orientation of perioperative staff members and the delivery of comprehensive nursing care in perioperative settings.     

Production of hydroxyl radicals in contracting skeletal muscle of cats

Reactive oxygen species increase during exhaustive contraction of skeletal muscle, but characterization of the specific species involved and their rates of production during nonexhaustive muscle contraction have not been investigated. We hypothesized that the production rate of hydroxyl radical (.OH) increases in contracting muscle and that this rate is attenuated by pretreatment with deferoxamine (Def) or dimethylthiourea (DMTU). We measured the rate of production of .OH before, during, and after 5 min of intermittent static contraction of the triceps surae muscles in cats (n = 6) using the formation of p-, m-, and o-tyrosines by hydroxylation of phenylalanine. L-Phenylalanine (30 mg/kg i.v.) was administered to each animal 3 min before contraction. Blood samples were collected from the popliteal vein 1 min before contraction; 1, 3, and 4.5 min during contraction; and 1 min after contraction. During and after contraction, the cumulative production rates of p-, m-, and o-tyrosines were elevated by 42.84 +/- 5.41, 0.25 +/- 0.04, and 0.21 +/- 0.03 nmol.min-1.g-1, respectively, compared with noncontracting triceps surae muscles. Pretreatment with Def (10 mg/kg i.v.; n = 5) or DMTU (10 mg/kg i.v.; n = 4) decreased the cumulative rates of production of p-, m-, and o-tyrosines during and after contraction. Additionally, the rate of tyrosine production increased in proportion to the percentage of maximal tension developed by the triceps surae muscles. These results directly demonstrate that .OH is produced in vivo in the skeletal muscle of cats during intermittent static contraction and that production can occur before the onset of fatigue.     

Prednisolone therapy of idiopathic feline lower urinary tract disease: a double-blind clinical study

A double-blind clinical study was performed to evaluate prednisolone as treatment for idiopathic feline lower urinary tract disease. No differences in response were observed in prednisolone- and placebo-treated cats.
