Diffuse nutrient loads are a common problem in developed and agricultural watersheds. While there has been substantial investment in best management practices (BMPs) to reduce diffuse pollution, there remains a need to better prioritize controls at the watershed scale as reflected in recent US-EPA guidance for watershed planning and Total Maximum Daily Load development. We implemented spatial optimization techniques among four diffuse source pathways in a mixed-use watershed in Northern Vermont to maximize total reduction of phosphorus loading to streams while minimizing associated costs. We found that within a capital cost range of 138 to 321 USD ha-1 a phosphorus reduction of 0.29 to 0.38 kg ha?1 year?1, is attainable. Optimization results are substantially more cost-effective than most scenarios identified by stakeholders. The maximum diffuse phosphorus load reduction equates to 1.25 t year?1using the most cost-effective technologies for each diffuse source at a cost of $3,464,260. However, 1.13 t year?1 could be reduced at a much lower cost of $976,417. This is the practical upper limit of achievable diffuse phosphorus reduction, above which additional spending would not result in substantially more phosphorus reduction. Watershed managers could use solutions along the resulting Pareto optimal curve to select optimal combinations of BMPs based on a water quality target or available funds. The results demonstrate the power of using spatial optimization methods to arrive at a cost-effective selection of BMPs and their distribution across a landscape.  相似文献

In this paper, a recently proposed single-solution memetic computing optimization method, namely three stage optimization memetic exploration (3SOME), is used to implement a self-tuning PID controller on board of a mobile robot. More specifically, the optimal PID parameters minimizing a measure of the following error on a path-following operation are found, in real-time, during the execution of the control loop. The proposed approach separates the control and the optimization tasks, and uses simple operating system primitives to share data. The system is able to react to modifications of the trajectory, thus endowing the robot with intelligent learning and self-configuration capabilities. A popular commercial robotic tool, i.e. the Lego Mindstorms robot, has been used for testing and implementing this system. Tests have been performed both in simulations and in a real Lego robot. Experimental results show that, compared to other online optimization techniques and to empiric PID tuning procedures, 3SOME guarantees a robust and efficient control behaviour, thus representing a valid alternative for self-tuning control systems.  相似文献

Scientific workflow systems support various workflow representations, operational modes, and configurations. Regardless of the system used, end users have common needs: to track the status of their workflows in real time, be notified of execution anomalies and failures automatically, perform troubleshooting, and automate the analysis of the workflow results. In this paper, we describe how the Stampede monitoring infrastructure was integrated with the Pegasus Workflow Management System and the Triana Workflow Systems, in order to add generic real time monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities across both systems. Stampede is an infrastructure that provides interoperable monitoring using a three-layer model: (1) a common data model to describe workflow and job executions; (2) high-performance tools to load workflow logs conforming to the data model into a data store; and (3) a common query interface. This paper describes the integration of Stampede monitoring architecture with Pegasus and Triana and shows the new analysis capabilities that Stampede provides to these workflow systems. The successful integration of Stampede with these workflow engines demonstrates the generic nature of the Stampede monitoring infrastructure and its potential to provide a common platform for monitoring across scientific workflow engines.  相似文献

Thermosensitive composite hydrogels containing various amounts of sodium montmorillonite (NaMM) and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAAm) were synthesized. Their equilibrium degree of swelling (DS) was measured in NaCl solutions of different ionic strength and at various temperatures. The DS decreased when increasing the clay content and no substantial shift in the phase transition temperature was noticed. The composite hydrogels investigated had a NaMM content ranging between 1.0 and 5.7 wt % (in 0.1M NaCl at 25°C). A considerable enhancement in the response to thermal stimuli was observed for NaMM contents >2–3 wt %. It is suggested that when the NaMM concentration approaches a critical value, the clay platelets can inhibit the formation of the hydrophobic skin layer that hinders shrinking in conventional pNIPAAm hydrogels. The effect of montmorillonite on the mechanical properties of the hydrogels was investigated by uniaxial compression tests, which showed that the modulus increases with the NaMM content. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The dynamic-mechanical behaviour and the tensile moduli of unstretched and stretched semicrystalline s-PS films, presenting different polymorphic forms (α, γ, δ and clathrate) but similar crystallinity and orientation, have been compared. The main aim is to elucidate the possible influence of different crystalline phases, being largely different in chain conformation and density, on mechanical properties of s-PS semicrystalline samples. For unstretched films presenting a preferential perpendicular orientation of the chain axes, the highest elastic modulus is observed for films with the high density γ phase while for uniaxially oriented films the highest modulus is observed for films with the trans-planar α phase. As for the clathrate films, the guest molecules when only included into the crystalline clathrate phase, have no plasticizing effect.  相似文献

The effect of lithium (ex LiNO3) on the metallic dispersion of 0.8 wt% Pt/Al2O3 catalysts, prepared by different impregnation techniques, was investigated by temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and the frontal method of H2 chemisorption. The temperature at which platinum precursor is reduced at a maximum rate (543 K) was not modified by 0.1 wt% lithium addition, whatever the preparation technique used. The dispersion values of platinum (70–90%), after reduction at 773 K, were slightly dependent on the preparation procedure. After the addition of 0.8 wt% lithium the TPR profile presented two well defind peaks and the dispersion values (20–50%), measured after reduction at 773 K, presented a significant decrease. The results are linked with the presence of residual nitrate ions, that had not been eliminated during calcination at 773 K in air, but had been decomposed under the reducing atmosphere of the TPR experiment.  相似文献

An effective strategy to increase the properties of poly (lactic acid) (PLA) is the addition of carbon nanotubes (CNT). In this work, aiming to improve the surface adhesion of PLA and CNT a new compatibilizer agent was prepared by reactive processing, PLA grafted maleic anhydride (PLA-g-MA) using benzoyl peroxide and maleic anhydride. The effectiveness of the PLA-g-MA as a compatibilizer agent was verified for PLA/PLA-g-MA/CNT nanocomposites. PLA and PLA-g-MA samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) to confirm the grafting reaction of maleic anhydride on PLA chains and by rheological analysis to prove the changes in the matrix PLA after the graphitization reaction. Thermal (differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis), mechanical tests (Izod impact strength and tensile test), and morphological characterization were used to verify the effect of the compatibilizer agent. The preparation of PLA-g-MA by reactive extrusion processing proved satisfactory and the nanocomposites presented good thermal and mechanical properties. The addition of the PLA-g-MA also contributed to the greater distribution of CNT and can be used as an alternative for the production of PLA/CNT nanocomposites.  相似文献

The use of biodegradable polymers is an interesting way to reduce the polymeric waste accumulation in the environment. However, the addition of fillers to biodegradable polymer matrices may decrease their biodegradability. Glassy carbon (GC) is a promising carbon material that can be employed as a filler in the production of antistatic packaging utilized to protect electronic components. The use of a biodegradable polymeric matrix such as poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) can be an excellent alternative for the preparation of green composites to be used in these packages. This work aims to evaluate the effect of the GC addition and the GC particle size on the biodegradability of the PHBV matrix, as well as to study the result of the employment of a previous photodegradation treatment on the biodegradation in aqueous medium of PHBV/GC composites. Scanning electron microscopy, residual weight measurement (%) and surface roughness showed that GC does not interfere negatively with PHBV biodegradability. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis and residual weight measurement permitted to suggest that the increase in the crystallinity degree of PHBV and PHBV/GC samples occasioned by the ultraviolet radiation hindered the water and enzyme access to the bulk of the materials, decreasing the biodegradability.  相似文献

The oxidation of two Co–Nb alloys containing 15 and 30 wt.% Nb has been studied at 600–800° C in H2–CO2 mixtures providing an oxygen pressure of 10–24 atm at 600°C and 10–20 atm at 700 and 800°C, below the dissociation pressure of cobalt oxide. At 600 and 700°C both alloys showed only a region of internal oxidation composed, of a mixture of alpha cobalt and of niobium oxides (NbO2 and Nb2O5) and at 700°C also the double oxide CoNb2O6, which formed from the Nb-rich Co3Nb phase. No Nb-depleted layer formed in the alloy at the interface with the region of internal oxidation at these temperatures. Upon oxidation at 800°C a transition between internal and external oxidation of niobium was observed, especially for Co–30Nb. This corrosion mode is associated with the development of a single-phase, Nb-depleted region at the surface of the alloy. The corrosion mechanism of these alloys is examined with special reference to the effect of the low solubility of niobium in cobalt and to the relation between the microstructures of the alloys and of the scales.  相似文献

In the present work, poly (lactic acid)/thermoplastic starch/gelatin sheets were produced by calendering–extrusion process and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs, synthesized by chemical reduction with d ‐glucose), were incorporated at sheet surfaces to promote antimicrobial activity. A gelatin solution containing AgNPs was enzymatically crosslinked as a layer at sheets surface using transglutaminase. AgNPs presented 63 nm (z average size) and spherical shape (scanning electron microscopy, SEM) while morphology analysis showed that sheets presented internal porosity. Mechanical properties (Young modulus, elongation at break, and tensile strength) and water vapor permeability presented significant difference in function of gelatin amount added to sheets formulation due to increased internal porosity. Antimicrobial activity was demonstrated against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa for the AGNPs solution as well as for the surface treated films. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
