Microwave Rejection Networks

This is an extension of the Bridged-T infinite rejection network idea transformed into microwave concepts. These devices achieve approximately 100db of attenuation with skirt attenuations approximately 5db. The tuning range between 1 KMc and 10 KMc is continuously covered with 4 units at present. Work is continuing to reduce the number of units to 2. Design parameters, performance curves, and application to MILSTD 826 will be discussed.     

Tumor register: information system for tumor centers (author's transl)

The different activities in the scope of the tumor center already shows in the multiplicity of concepts for which incidence register, therapy register, clinical register or the supplies register are only a few examples. Such terms circumscribe a few interests from the therapeutic, epidemiologic or clinical and scientific aspects, which are projected on tumor centers as an expectation or a duty. From the compilation of these interests a bundle of unspecific aims results for which a classification according to various levels of information is suggested. Only cooperation of all levels makes possible a tumor register as an information system for medicine which supports the tasks of all those involved and makes the questions of the population more easily and more quickly answerable.     

Intraventricular chemotherapy in neonatal meningitis

All of 16 infants with neonatal meningitis treated during a 30-month period were found to have accompanying ventriculitis at the time of the initial ventricular puncture. Fifteen of these infants were caused by gramm-negative organisms. All infants received antibiotics systemically and intraventricularly via an implanted ventriculostomy reservoir or by direct ventricular injection. Antibiotic concentrations within the ventricular fluid were monitored during chemotherapy; the complications encountered during treatment are discussed. Fifteen infants survived the infection; of these, seven infants were normal at follow-up examinations. In our experience intraventricular chemotherapy as an adjunct to systemic administration of antibiotics has greatly reduced the mortality rate in neonatal meningitis.     

Some Practical System Availability Calculations

The usefulness of a recent result in system availability is displayed and discussed. Methods are presented for solving some problems which arise in the practical implementation of this result. Specifically, equations are provided for calculating the availability of a series system in which one or more components may have a surge or an installed spare. Finally, a manufacturing line efficiency model is described which has system (line) availability as one of its principal factors.     

Equating student satisfaction measures

Colleges and universities conduct student satisfaction studies for many important policy making reasons. However the differences in instrumentation and the use of students' self-reported ratings of satisfaction makes such decisions sample-, instrument-, and institution-dependent. A common metric of student satisfaction would assist decision makers by providing a richness of information not typically obtained. The present study investigated the extent to which two nationally known instruments of student satisfaction could be scaled on the same quantitative metric. Pseudo-common item equating (Fisher, 1997) based on five link items of low and high endorsability enabled comparisons of "similar, but not identical items, from different instruments, calibrated on different samples" (p. 87). Results suggest that both instruments measured similar constructs and could be reasonably used to create a single, common metric. While samples used in the experiment were less than ideal, results clearly demonstrated the usefulness and reasonability of the pseudo-common item equating process.     

Absolute linearity measurements on HgCdTe detectors in the infrared region

The nonlinearity characteristics of photoconductive and photovoltaic HgCdTe detectors were experimentally investigated in the infrared wavelength region by use of the National Physical Laboratory detector linearity measurement facility. The nonlinearity of photoconductive HgCdTe detectors was shown to be a function of irradiance rather than the total radiant power incident on the detector. Photoconductive HgCdTe detectors supplied by different vendors were shown to have similar linearity characteristics for wavelengths around 10 microm. However, the nonlinearity of response of a photovoltaic HgCdTe detector was shown to be significantly lower than the corresponding value for photoconductive HgCdTe detectors at the same wavelength.
