Agroforestry systems may provide diverse ecosystem services and economic benefits that conventional agriculture cannot, e.g. potentially mitigating greenhouse gas emissions by enhancing nutrient cycling, since tree roots can capture nutrients not taken up by crops. However, greenhouse gas emission data from agroforestry systems are not available in the southeastern USA, thus limiting our ability to optimize agroforestry management strategies for the region. We hypothesized that tree-crop interactions could prevent excess N from being released to the atmosphere as nitrous oxide (N2O). We determined N2O and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, soil temperature, water content, and surface-soil inorganic N in an 8-year-old agroforestry site at the Center for Environmental Farming Systems in Goldsboro, North Carolina, USA. The experimental design was a factorial arrangement of soil texture (loamy sand, sandy loam, and clay loam) and canopy cover (cropped alley, margin between crops and trees, and under Pinus palustris, Pinus taeda, and Quercus pagoda) with three replications. Sampling occurred 42 times within a year using static, vented chambers exposed to the soil for 1-h periods. Soil N2O emission was lower under tree canopies than in cropped alleys, and margin areas were intermediate. Soil texture, water content, and inorganic N were key determinants of the magnitude of N2O emission. Soil CO2 emission was controlled by temperature and water content as expected, but surprisingly not by their interaction. Soil temperature was 1.8 ± 1.3 °C lower and soil water content was 0.043 ± 0.15 m3 m?3 lower under tree canopy than in cropped alleys, which helped to reduce CO2 emission under trees relative to that in cropped alleys. Our results provide a foundation for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in complex agricultural landscapes with varying soil texture by introducing timber production without abandoning agricultural operations. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Improved resistive switching memory characteristics by controlling the formation polarity in an IrOx/Al2O3/IrOx-ND/Al2O3/WOx/W structure have been investigated. High density of 1 × 1013/cm2 and small size of 1.3 nm in diameter of the IrOx nano-dots (NDs) have been observed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The IrOx-NDs, Al2O3, and WOx layers are confirmed by X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy. Capacitance-voltage hysteresis characteristics show higher charge-trapping density in the IrOx-ND memory as compared to the pure Al2O3 devices. This suggests that the IrOx-ND device has more defect sites than that of the pure Al2O3 devices. Stable resistive switching characteristics under positive formation polarity on the IrOx electrode are observed, and the conducting filament is controlled by oxygen ion migration toward the Al2O3/IrOx top electrode interface. The switching mechanism is explained schematically based on our resistive switching parameters. The resistive switching random access memory (ReRAM) devices under positive formation polarity have an applicable resistance ratio of > 10 after extrapolation of 10 years data retention at 85°C and a long read endurance of 105 cycles. A large memory size of > 60 Tbit/sq in. can be realized in future for ReRAM device application. This study is not only important for improving the resistive switching memory performance but also help design other nanoscale high-density nonvolatile memory in future. 相似文献

We synthesized a family of neuromuscular blocking agents (NMB) based on decamethonium, but containing a carborane cluster in the methylene chain between the two quaternary ammonium groups. The carborane cluster isomers o-NMB, m-NMB, and p-NMB were tested in animals for neuromuscular block and compared with agents used clinically: rocuronium and decamethonium. All three isomers caused reversible muscle weakness in mice as determined by grip strength and inverted screen tests, with a potency rank of p-NMB > rocuronium > decamethonium > m-NMB > o-NMB. The mechanism of action of the compounds was determined by using the in vitro rat phrenic nerve hemi-diaphragm preparation and electrophysiologic measurements in cells. Neostigmine reversed hemi-diaphragm weakness caused by the three isomers and rocuronium, but not succinylcholine. In electrophysiologic recordings of currents through acetylcholine receptor channels, the carborane compounds did not activate channel activity but did inhibit channel activation by acetylcholine. These results demonstrate that the carborane neuromuscular blocking agents are non-depolarizers in contrast to the depolarizing action of the parent compound. 相似文献

An Eulerian Lagrangian localized adjoint method (ELLAM) is considered for the resolution of advection‐dominated transport problems in porous media. Contrary to standard Eulerian methods, ELLAM can use large time steps because the advection term is approximated accurately without any CFL restriction. However, it is shown in this article that special care must be taken for the approximation of the dispersive and reactive terms when large time steps are used over heterogeneous domains. An alternative procedure is proposed. It is based on an equivalent dispersion coefficient or an equivalent reaction rate when different zones are encountered during the tracking. Numerical experiments are performed with variable dispersion or variable reaction rates over space (including nonlinearity). When classical ELLAM require numerous time steps to handle heterogeneity, the alternative procedure is shown to perform with the same accuracy in a single time step. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2009 相似文献

The relative density, deformation behavior, and dynamic rheology of bodies consolidated from aqueous alumina slurries, formulated at pH 4 and containing NH4Cl, were studied as a function of the salt concentration (0.1–0.75 M). The smallest salt concentration produced the highest relative density (0.596), which was independent of consolidation pressure. Nearly identical relative densities were obtained for the other salt concentrations, ranging from 0.57 to 0.59 for consolidation pressures of 5–100 MPa, respectively. The consolidated bodies exhibited either a plastic or an elastic behavior when tested in compression. It was observed that the transition from a plastic to an elastic behavior occurred at a critical consolidation pressure. This critical consolidation pressure was directly dependent on the salt concentration. The storage (elastic) modulus for the fluidized, plastic bodies increased with salt concentration. The storage modulus was also observed to be dependent on the time the bodies were allowed to rest after they were subjected to a high shear rate. A pre-consolidated and fluidized slurry formulated to contain 0.5 NH4Cl was extruded into a rubber mold cavity and further consolidated by isopressing at 200 MPa for 2 min. The body not only increased its relative density (0.58–0.62), but it also became elastic to enable its removal from the rubber cavity without shape distortion. No linear shrinkage was detected after the isopressed bodies were dried. Because of the lack of shrinkage, rapid drying was possible. For example, bar specimens (6.4 mm × 12.7 mm × 60 mm) would survive a 34 °C/min heating rate to 300 °C; the specimen was completely dried within 20 min. Because shrinkage does not occur during drying, bodies could be placed directly into a furnace and heated to 1500 °C for 0.5 h to achieve a relative density of >0.99 and an average grain size of 1.6 μm. 相似文献

Electrospinning is a route to polymer fibres with diameters considerably smaller than available from most fibre‐producing techniques. We explore the use of a low molecular weight compound as an effective control additive during the electrospinning of poly(ε‐caprolactone). This approach extends the control variables for the electrospinning of nanoscale fibres from the more usual ones such as the polymer molecular weight, solvent and concentration. We show that through the use of dual solvent systems, we can alter the impact of the additive on the electrospinning process so that finer as well as thicker fibres can be prepared under otherwise identical conditions. As well as the size of the fibres and the number of beads, the use of the additive allows us to alter the level of crystallinity as well as the level of preferred orientation of the poly(ε‐caprolactone) crystals. This approach, involving the use of a dual solvent and a low molar mass compound, offers considerable potential for application to other polymer systems. Cucurbitaceae family seeds are mostly discarded as agro-industrial wastes. Gurum (Citrullus lanatus var. colocynthoide) is an underutilized wild cucurbit plant, closely related to desert watermelon, which is grown abundantly in some African countries. Gurum seeds can play a significant role in health and nutrition due to their high oil content. This review describes the nutritional composition of gurum seeds and their oil profile. Gurum seeds are a good source of oil (27–35.5%), fiber (26–31%), crude protein (15–18%), and carbohydrates (14–17%). Gurum seeds oil is extracted by supercritical CO2 (SFE), screw press, and solvent extraction techniques. The gurum seeds oil is composed of unsaturated fatty acids with a high proportion of linoleic acid (C18:2) and oleic acid (C18:1). Gurum seeds oil contains various bioactive compounds, such as tocopherols, phytosterols, and polyphenols. It is reported that solvent extraction gives a higher yield than the screw press and SFE, but the SFE is preferred due to safety issues. More studies are required for producing better quality gurum seeds oil by using novel extraction techniques that can increase oil yield. 相似文献

Co-integration techniques show promise in the analysis of short- and long-run effects of economic variables on energy use. We use these techniques to develop an error correction model of annual US residential electricity demand. We construct equipment stock indices and estimate the model for 1949–1993. Our analysis suggests a structural shift in consumption during the 1960s. We discuss reasons for this shift, report the short- and long-run elasticities, provide forecasts for 1994–1995, and compare the model's forecasts with other published forecasts. 相似文献

Previous studies support the hypothesis that large numbers of infaunal burrow-irrigating organisms in the western basin of Lake Erie may increase significantly the sediment oxygen demand, thus enhancing the rate of hypolimnetic oxygen depletion. We conducted laboratory experiments to quantify burrow oxygen dynamics and increased oxygen demand resulting from burrow irrigation using two different year classes of Hexagenia spp. nymphs from western Lake Erie during summer, 2006. Using oxygen microelectrodes and hot film anemometry, we simultaneously determined oxygen concentrations and burrow water flow velocities. Burrow oxygen depletion rates ranged from 21.7 mg/nymph/mo for 15 mm nymphs at 23 °C to 240.7 mg/nymph/mo for 23 mm nymphs at 13 °C. Sealed microcosm experiments demonstrated that mayflies increase the rate of oxygen depletion by 2–5 times that of controls, depending on size of nymph and water temperature, with colder waters having greater impact. At natural population densities, nymph pumping activity increased total sediment oxygen demand 0.3–2.5 times compared to sediments with no mayflies and accounted for 22–71% of the total sediment oxygen demand. Extrapolating laboratory results to the natural system suggest that Hexagenia spp. populations may exert a significant control on oxygen depletion during intermittent stratification. This finding may help explain some of the fluctuations in Hexagenia spp. population densities in western Lake Erie and suggests that mayflies, by causing their own population collapse irrespective of other environmental conditions, may need longer term averages when used as a bio-indicator of the success of pollution-abatement programs in western Lake Erie and possibly throughout the Great Lakes. 相似文献
